Book Review: THE ARABIAN NIGHTS

“The Arabian Nights” is also often published under the title “1001 Nights.” This is a compilation of stories by multiple authors, but those authors names are lost to time.

I just picked up that exact same copy! I’m a little intimidated but i want to devote at least a month to devour this work. I hope this is a good translation

I thought the translation was good and the notes on the text were good too, my only issue was with some punctuation errors but I’m super picky about that kind of thing, I hope you enjoy it!

Which edition and translator did you read? You don´t say it in the video. The Nights is a very complex book. Scholars discuss about the original sources, so editions and translations tend to be very different. They tend to include different stories and even the finale of the frame arc might differ from one version to another.

It’s the Barnes and Noble Classics Edition and off hand I’m not sure who translated it

I have this book in 4 volumes. I've started reading it but I stopped. Like you've said, I was also surprised with the genie. They're mean creatures hahahaha

Well, that's a very western view of the Jin. I don't mean it in a derogatory way a lot of Western mythology and fairytale were also very much sanitized. Grimm stories are not the same as Disney. Muslims believe that Jin exists as a third major intelligent creation of God. In Islam angels don't have free will. Only humans and Jin have free will. Jinn are creatures made out of fire and smoke and they can be either good or bad. But generally, they're considered mischievous and or straight up evil. Basically like fairies in the west. They used to be creatures that could be good or bad. And some of them stole children etc. But now they're cutesy winged creatures
