One of the most underrated and visually artistic animated movies made. Guillermo Del Toro always gives us some of the most creative and yet insanely underrated animated films. I feel like Coco was inspired by this film and both are really great

Jorge R. Gutierrez is one of the best directors for animated movies, hes loves to explore Mexican culture and bring it to life, you should check out his movies more, hes the real creative drive in this movie.

True i didn't even know this movie till my friend suggested it after watching coco. I definitely feel storywise The Book of life is better than coco. But coco has more beautiful animation.

@@thunderbull331 I am a professional 3D Character Animator, i found the animations in this movie better than Coco because of the sheer joy in them. I can imagine the animation department having so much fun animating all these shots.

I am so happy this movie finally gets the recognition it deserves. I don't know when I stumbled upon it, but I show it to people every chance I get when they don't know it.

My favorite thing about this movie is that Joquain and Manolo are still friends. They are still friends who love the same girl and have some heavy shadows over them but it never tears them apart until those heavy shadows appear and cast over them.

UNDEEEEEEEERRAAAAAAATED!!!!! And it's better than Coco, go on fight me!! And by the way this came out first

The bull wasn't forgotten, it was more healed, since it was made up of thousands of angry bulls, the apology song was able to calm them and give them peace

There was a Renaissance of loveable pig characters for a decade. Churro gang rise up!! Also, one of the mariachis is Gabriel Iglesias who specifically requested his character be Fluffy

It goes by a little quick, but if you listen to the narration the first time Chakal is seen it's explained that he stole the medal from Xibalba origionally, but Xibalba had stolen it back. After which Chakal had come unhinged, going more than a little nuts with his obsession to regain it.

I love this film. Personally, I like it better than Coco. When I first saw it, and even now, the Apology song gets to me. When I finally saw Coco, probably due to the hype I kept seeing and hearing, it didn't get to me even though the story is "sadder". TBoL, It's more fun. Unfortunately, it always gets overlooked. You should all watch Kubo and the Two Strings and Jack and the Cuckoo's Clock Heart. I love those movies but have yet to see too many reactions. Especially Jack, there is a cadence to the movie. I can't explain it, but I think other people should check it out.

I just find this art style so imaginative and refreshing. Also, I think the reason she chose Manolo was because he was always more genuine and didn't use things to prop himself up - like his mustache, medals, etc. He's always just been a guitarist/singer who didn't want to be violent. lol

Such a beautiful film, this film will forever be in my heart.

this movie was so , just omg, I loved it, yes it was a tiny bit creepy but the music and the gods and the story, just yeah, I love the gods in this story, they are both phenomenal

When Coco came out, I wasn’t keen on watching it because it came so soon after Book of Life and I didn’t think another Day of the Dead film could rival it. But I love them both now.

The movie is directed by Jorge R Gutierrez, who has a very unique art and animation style. I recommend his other works, like his two series El Tigre and Maya And The Three. Also yes, bull fighting involves killing it. It's sad.

40:53 I interpreted this as setting all the bulls' souls free as they do not deserve to be angered and killed for the pleasure of people watching bullfighting. Manolo sings "If you can forgive," meaning he is apologizing in behalf of his family and freeing the bulls from the anger and unfinished business they were in with the bullfighters that killed them.

I think one detail of the plot that kind of gets overlooked is that Joaquin DOESN'T want Maria to marry him just to protect the town. When General Posada advises Maria to marry him _right after Manolo just died,_ Joaquin even pointedly tells him that this is not the time, and Joaquin is later about to call off the wedding before Chakal shows up and conveniently interrupts it. I just like the usual subversion of having Joaquin be an ass the whole way through.

Indeed; the fools (or jerks, if we want to be harsh XD) are the villagers that operate under the idea that "Joaquín is our protector, grant him his every wish". There is room for Joaquín to grow as a human person, he is not bad; his main flaw comes from two different sources: sometimes his head gets too much into the concepts of "honor and glory" he gets a bit too much selfish... and that he has no idea he is, unwillingly, Xibalba's pawn in this game (the bet was that María would end up marrying him, regardless of mutual interest... or even if he, eventually, wanted it or not).

Am I the only who thinks they took from inspiration for the animation style from the old El Tigre show?

I love COCO, but Book of Life is the reason. this remain my top 5 movie of all time, with number one being The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

This and Coco both prominently feature the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday and so would be expected to have certain similarities, much like two different Christmas movies will have a lot of similarities. Other than what is necessary because of featuring that holiday they don't have much in common. Except for one thing: in both the main male protagonist grew up in a family that has a family business, the family expects them to go into that business, and they want to be guitarists instead. I'm curious if that is a theme from Mexican folklore that the writers of both films happened to find when researching Mexican culture.

I took my daughter to go watch this movie when it released. Just so that I can fan-boy all out over the music in the movie. She liked the story though.

I rather just watch the girl react or react with someone better. And btw, Book of Life came out before Cocoa, even though you guys said that way at the end but didn't know at the beginning.
