Book Art - DIY Tutorial to create your pattern with any image for photo strip book art
In this tutorial I explain the process to create your pattern using Libre Office and then I show the process (with tips) in applying the image to the book pages. I use Libre Office, but the process is the same with Excel.

    When determining the height and width of a photo on excel, should either the "lock aspect ratio" or "Relative to original picture size" be checked. My height is 9 inches, my width is 129. What should i write for scale height and scale width? Thanks!

  • @CraftedSweetly

    @CraftedSweetly

    Жыл бұрын

    No - neither should be checked. You want to be able to enter the height and width yourself. The height will be height of the book and the width, the number of pages in the book divided by 4. Hope that helps.

  • @CraftedSweetly

    @CraftedSweetly

    Жыл бұрын

    Technically by 4. You're using 1 strip per leaf (page 1 and 2 use the same strip) so you divide by 2 and then each strip is 0.5" wide, so you divide by 2 again. Not sure if you're aware, I now have an app that creates the patterns for you...fotobookart.com. all you have to do is upload image, enter # of pages and height of book in INCHES. It's $2.99 and it creates the pattern for you, regular or inksaver.

    I’m a crafter that likes to try all new things. I heard about this craft while going to garage sales. One of the homeowners was selling some crafting supplies & we got to talking & this is how I started searching for this on KZread. I also have a Cricut & read your comments and saw someone had asked you about it. Have you figured out how to make it work using a Cricut? Also, when using your Fotobookart website it asks for the last odd page. What about the extra pages in the front & back of the book; do we include those pages? Do you also have where you can also do the top of the pages in your website program? Looking to do a book for an 85th birthday celebration coming up mid July so wanting to get this going. I found a book at one of the garage sales titled Happy Birthday by Danielle Steel in mint condition and going to put a pic of her family on it! Thank you!

  • @CraftedSweetly

    @CraftedSweetly

    Ай бұрын

    That's awesome! Glad you found my videos! I thought about it some more after that viewer suggested it, and I think it would take longer for the Cricut to cut it than me cutting it with my Cutterpillar. Plus, I would be concerned about lifting the strips off the sticky mat as they could curl, tear, etc. It's just faster by hand overall. Additional pages at the front or back, can be added to the total count, which is what I do because I like to use up all the pages. For the top of the book, it's the same program; the top would just be another pattern - I have a video for front/top design. I have videos on about every topic. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

  • @CraftedSweetly

    @CraftedSweetly

    2 жыл бұрын

    For this, you can use any book - there isn't an exact number of pages you need because you base the "pattern" on the number of pages in the book - so you're working backwards in a sense. Having said that, too skinny and the image will look skinny, too thick, and the image will be distorted and wide. I would stay stick to books in the 275-400 page range. But you can do it with less and also with more.

    Diana - I wonder if you, or anyone else reading this, could help me solve a frustrating problem that I can't seem to fix? When I set up my picture in Libre Calc. I place it in Row 2, which in the case of the current book I'm working on, should be 9". When I check the height of Row 2 it shows that it's 9", but when I print it, Row 2 ends up being 8 5/8" or 8.625". I thought it might be a problem in my printer settings, but this happens on any printer I've used. I've played with the margins and I make sure that I'm not scaling down before printing, and this still happens. The only way that I seem to work around this is by adding the difference of 0.375" to the row and resizing the picture to fit. Then it prints at 9"

    This is so cool. I might sound silly by asking this, but you don’t lose part of the picture? Say if you cut 1 inch strip, and only a millimetre of the picture on that strip shows on the edge of the book and the rest of the image is folder and tucked in between the pages, don’t you lose the inch of the strip minus the tiny bit that is sitting along the very edge of the page? If that makes sense….

    Happy to help! You take the number of pages in the book and divide by 2. That gives you the number of leaves in the book that you need strips for. Take the number of leaves and multiply by 0.5" (width of each strip) and that gives you the length of the picture. Example: book has 400 pages. Divide by 2 gives you 200 leaves. Multiply by 0.5" gives you 100" length for picture. Hope that helps!

I run my own crafting and embroidery business, and I've always thought out of the box with all the self-taught knowledge I've acquired. I learn something new EVERY day! And THIS was that new thing 🎉. So, as I watched your video, and having experience in 3D papercrafting, it was natural for me to watch you using familiar tools... the scoring board... and since I own 5 cutting machines, and have the scoring tool for my Cricut, watching your Excel process (which is genius) my brain just blended all these skills together for a potentially automated, efficient, consistent process. 😁 Of course I had to mention it, you're the expert of the current process, and would be able to advise if you thought it might work. If your sharing knowledge with us, only fair to reciprocate.😊 😊😊 I would love to know if you test it out!❤
