Ойын-сауық

Hi guys, here's an extra video as I've realised I accidentally missed out a chunk from last night's video during editing!
On the agenda tonight we're taking a look at Rick Derringer performing 'Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo' back in 1973!
Original video - • RICK DERRINGER / EDGAR...

Fil, you're a brilliant musician and instructor. What a great look at one of the best musicians in one of the tightest groups to ever grace the stage. Let's not forget to mention: when this came out, it was on every radio station and on every jukebox in the USA and stayed there for a long time. So did Frankenstein. No one did it any better than Rick Derringer and Edgar Winter.

Another cool Edgar Rick Dan and Chuck song is Free Ride, where Dan is playing a double neck. The intro is Dan playing guitar while Edgar reaches over to play the Bass part. Love it.

We called it the "chunky" sound back in the day ... first song I learned to play all the way through. The version on Derringer Live or some of his newer performances of R&RHK show his brilliance to another level. His live solo during this song from the 70's became legendary.

BONUS! I thought that was a 'stretch chord' and I do think it was "a pull-off". Just to see a part 2 was nice. I think a bit of that guitar breakdown was covered in last night's video but it was good to see it 'in context' with the rest. The rhythm guitarist (his hairstyle) looks outta place, sort of like a kid from the 90's- 2000 going back in time doing a photo/video bomb ala "Marty McFly"! Speaking of hair, we know you like Rick's hair Fil, many of us "doo" too! 🤘😎

Very good analysis, Viscount Fil of McCoy. We used to play this song back in 197-/2/3 - for some reason we began with Byrd’s The Earl of Salisbury, into the song , long solo (aaargh), intro to Fairport’s Walk Awhile, instrumental version of Matty Groves, back into song. We did a harmony on a third on the little riff between lines in the verse. Apart from that (blushes nervously), it’s so good to see the superb Rick Derringer getting an airing: right from “Hang on Sloopy” he’s been miles ahead of the pack, and a great singer too. As you say, his work with the Winters is always worth a hearing and I don’t think I’ve seen him play a bad note. For some reason, his less frantic stuff has always reminded me a bit of Pete Frampton, God knows why. His stuff with Todd Rundgren - not everyone’s cup of goats, is also well worth hearing! How you manage, Viscount Fil of Dan, is beyond me. I’m so glad that you sorted out that ridiculous copyright nonsense. I know beyond doubt that an increasing number of people are learning a great deal from your lessons that they do not learn in so many of the new music degrees, whose main qualification is being alive and getting a grant. Thank you.

Always regretted not learning site reading but as it turns out he never became a famous musician either just another amp builder.

I'm nitpicking here but that A power chord and associated lick in the intro and again throughout the rest of the tune is a bit more complicated - Its syncopated with a ghost note played on a muted A string on the 1 and the A power chord E and A on the D and G strings at the second fret played on the 'and'. Then a picked C at the 3rd fret followed by an open D and then E followed by another syncopated muted ghost note before playing a C G power chord at the 5th fret on the D and G strings followed by the E A power chord at the 2nd fret. Then and open A string followed by a plucked G at the 5th fret with muted A string resolving to the A power chord at the 2nd fret again but bending the strings slightly to put some funk to it. I've made it sound far more difficult than it actually is to play but if you're covering this tune???... This should be in it. If it's not you're essentially driving a car with a flat tire.
