All Quiet on the Western Front was ‘aight. I thought it kinda seemed like a betrayal of the novels themes that basically all the human evil of war is projected onto that cartoonishly evil CO at the end, where the novel really highlights how the war actually changed the people who fought it into killers who can’t fit in to a post war society. From a technical standpoint those Germans make good stuff but it’s very emotionally austere compared to more blubbery, dramatic US stuff I was weened on.

The technical aspects of the new All Quiet, I thought, were exemplary. The ambient snyth score too. (What a choice!) The changes to the plot to include stuff about the armistice negotiation (not in the book!) just didn't work for me. It seemed like a conscious ploy to modern liberal audiences concerned about the abstract rise of modern fascism. Imagine a Vietnam War movie that cuts to several scenes of Bobby Kennedy gravely commenting that this war is going to cause a cultural rift in America - just very on the nose and not necessary.

Seeing a lot of folks point out the propensity of Will to trash movies he's never seen, and I agree. He assumes that "Living" is based off an Kazuo Ishiguro novel, which is a lazy assumption based on the common name nationality. The screenplay was written by Ishiguro, but it's based off of the film "Ikiru" by Akira Kurosawa, which is in turn based off of a Tolstoy novel.

Having done Hell of Presidents and Hell on Earth, you should do a series called *_Future Hole._* Basically you've been covering the Christman transcendentalist fatalist take on a material conception of world history and the USA in particular, but I feel like you've been ignoring the elephant in the room which is if not the proletarian world revolution, what happens next to America. Even if you believe that the global working class has been defeated in that epochal fashion, completely losing the moment in the first half of the 20th century and the second Thirty Years War and all that, history doesn't stop. So the question is, for Future Hole, _what comes _*_after the USA?_* Because the USA is absolutely doomed, quite apart from climate catastrophe. It's empire is running straight into a wall of global sick-of-your-shit and you-got-nothing. Can the USA even survive the end of its empire, the end of dollar diplomacy, the petro dollar and rglobal reserve currency status with all the massive economic and geostrategic benefits they have granted the USA since 1945 when the British empire/Commonwealth Sterling Area and £Sterling as a global reserve currency were assasinated by Washington, the US's global free lunch as Michael Hudson calls it. I doubt it. All of those psychoses from American settler-colonialism are going to hit that wall too, with the definitive foreclosing of all the political and military possibilities, even the virtualised possibilities via remote warfare and proxy wars rather than GI boots on the ground, of any further "westward expansion" of any further conquering of the frontier. The USA is already in advanced dilapidation and decrepitude, especially in its political class and media system. The echoes with the late Roman Empire, with the late Orttomon empire, with the revolutionary France, whatever you like that maybe isn't respectable historiography to make comparisons with, neverytheless keep growing louder and harder to ignore. So the USA is doomed. But what comes after? What comes next? How does the break-up happen, how does the North American Dark Age take shape, who are the barbarians of the century to start knocking down city walls and liberating the starving peasants, what could be the Chruch of the interregnum, continuing the structures in a toothless ceremonial form while the material, cultural and political ground shifts underneath. Will Canada finally annex Washington state and Alaska as they naturally ought to? Will Mexico reclaim New Mexico? And can the revolution come as the brutal imperial state is forced to tear at the flesh of the American people instead of everyone else's? And will the Chapo boys ever manage to think outside the box of America's outdated, oligarvchical and defunct US Constitution and outside of America's present 2 party system and the allegedly-lesser-evil complicity it enforces?

I don’t know why they’re ignoring the preemptive awards ceremonies for they’re best picture prediction. EEAAO has swept PGA, DGA, WGA, SAG and Critics Choice, the the only anomaly being BAFTA. I am with Matt that it’s a solid 3/5 so I don’t have a dog in this fight, but the movie seems pretty locked for BP with a potential Banshees being a close second. I think what could happen is that the Kwans win best director and Banshees takes BP and OS. Or the vote could just be split and BP goes to Fabelmans or Women Talking, (although the latter seems unlikely since it is not up for anything other than BP and adapted screenplay.) The only chance EEAAO has at missing BP is if it doesn’t win best original screenplay since the two always seem to go hand in hand

EEAAO take was p dumb too. Which is fine but its annoying when they project shallow readings of these films onto the culture to deconstruct why other people like something they don't, ala "EEAAO is j rick and morty, cause everything is rick and morty" is the exact type of shit chapo tends to make fun of. still need something to listen to in order to keep the void at bay while i wash dishes tho.

"I think CODA might be the worst one of those, I haven't even seen this movie." That line says it all -- these people just want to hear themselves talk and form opinions based on their own presuppositions without actually knowing what they're talking about. This is like that awful episode about The New York Times best-of list where they haven't seen a single one but tore them all apart. They didn't even know Sarah Polley was a director? This is like listening to annoying eight-year-olds ramble incessantly about their moronic opinions.
