So Matt watches every episode of SNL and every Oscar ceremony? He's into some kind of television based sadomasochism and we're here for it.

A slap is the proper aristocratic response to an insult to one’s honor or, especially, to the honor of one’s wife. The notion of one leading citizen slapping another leading citizen for insulting his wife would have been seen as perfectly reasonable in pre-Civil War America. The last famous duel in U.S. history was fought in 1859 in San Francisco when anti-slavery U.S. Senator David Broderick was shot dead by the pro-slavery former California Supreme Court chief justice David Terry at what is now said to be the 7th hole at the San Francisco Golf Club. But that was a long time ago. In Hollywood history, lots of famous white guys have struck each other. For instance, at a 1945 party at David O. Selznick’s estate, Errol Flynn and John Huston, both sweet on the late Olivia De Havilland (1916-2020), famously wailed on each other. On the other hand, most of the famous feuds in white Hollywood came to blows off-camera.

Chris Rock deserved the slap for making a joke that would have been less than mediocre even if the movie he was referencing wasn't 26 YEARS OLD

Love how Will Smith has talked about all the many, many celebrities who have called him every day to make sure he is OK and help him thru this difficult time.....that he completely brought upon himself and has obviously not used to grow or learn.

Being able to take a joke, especially one as minor as Rock's is just about the most basic measure of maturity you can imagine. Kindergarten children hit each other when they hurl similarly minor insults, forgiving them and understanding that THEY'RE CHILDREN is expected. Justifying why adults should be allowed to act like children is really just a reflection of how incredibly bankrupt this culture.

I punched my wife's new boyfriend a few years ago, just a simple gentleman's punch to let him know he crossed a line. The State made sure I understood that they have absolute monopoly on violence, but I ain't rich famous or powerful.

I am trying to hold space for sausages and chips. This is just the suggestible idiocy of magazine and culture comment column writers. They're just taking a position to take a position, and next week or next year they'll write the exact opposite in response to some other celebrity bullshit. No-one gives a shit what they think or feel in reality. Or what I think or feel, of course. Which is fair.

The ratings for the Oscars sucks because their nominees tend to be movies that the Academy votes for to let people know how smart and cultured they are. Over the last ten years (2014-2023), I know people who actually liked two of those movies (Everything Everywhere and Spotlight) and I don't know anyone who's seen six of them. After 12 Years a Slave won, half of the people who voted for it admitted that they hadn't even seen it and, be honest, would Spotlight have won if it hadn't been about "bringing down" the Catholic Church?

To be fair to will Smith and Chris Rock. It was an open palm face slap. Both men are going to be ok. Chris wasn't arrested for talking. The state didn't see him commit a speech crime because the state can't arrest you for speeching your words you say. If Chris shot a gun for no reason. The state would independently arrest him. Will Smith isn't allowed to physically touch another person without them being good with it. Its why hugs, boxing, mma, and pats on the back or handshakes are all legal. Because each recipient of the touching are allowing it. Absolutely most people do not!! Touch someone that says no to a touch. Im not a hugger. If im not a hugging person sometimes. I guarantee you that most people return that respect to you. People react, say, you don't want a hug. But they don't hug you. They say it. But they absolutely don't do it. Will Smith has billions and he had to deal with a mediocre bad dumb joke. Take a ribbing every once and a while. Your not MIB Jesus
