Bonsaify | Rockhounding and Root Over Rock Bonsai Design
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Join Eric on a rockhounding trip to Black Butte Reservoir in Northern California! (Rockhounding is also known as amateur geology; the recreational study and collection of rocks, gems, minerals, or fossils from their natural environments.) He gets excited about the dark rocks he finds at a specific rock outcropping and scree slope, and the abundant mounds of vibrant, thick moss.
1:47 Eric is looking for rocks with interesting shapes, interesting faceting. He doesn't want 90 degree angles or flat faces. He's particularly fascinated by undulations you can see in the morning light.
3:51 As he carries 150 pounds of rock on his back, we realize the connection between rockhounding and weightlifting. ;-)
4:36 Back in the workshop, Eric demonstrates a design exercise for how he imagines and plans for the future use of the stones to design a root-over-rock bonsai.
7:15 Remember that the rock is our trunk and incorporate good bonsai design when imagining the composition. "Designing Root Over Rock with the tree and the rock in mind".

I am thrilled I discovered this video, fantastic!!
for an exotic looking tree display, aquarium shops are a good source for unusual shaped rocks with dark to vivid colors and textures.

The faceted rocks are up on the tops of the hills. The stuff in the reservoir itself is more rounded, and there is more variation in mineral type also. There has been a lot of suiseki collecting in this area over the years, so we know the minerals are nice. However, I prefer faceted rocks for pines and in general for ROR.
Is that Tabletop near Oroville, Ca.

No, well not too far. It's at Black Butte Lake, west of Orland.
So they let you collect rocks there in butte?

Short answer: Yes. Longer Anwer: Always check local regulations when you go collecting. By default in California creeks are public property and rockhounding is allowed for personal use. Access to creeks is normally private, so do not trespass. Here is a good reference for rockhounding in general: www.gatorgirlrocks.com/law/2016-ggr-federal-law-summar.pdf At Black Butte lake, the surrounding area belongs to the USACE and are labeled as "Public Lands" where hunting, fishing, trapping etc are all allowed. The BLM regulations apply to the land areas (so see summary at link above.)
Wow ❤️
