Bonsaify | Rock Selection for "Root-Over-Rock" Style Bonsai Trees
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Root-Over-Rock Bonsai! Eric explains the criteria he uses for selecting stones for root-over-rock style bonsai trees. He shares what he does and does not like about 5 different types of trees.
0:45 Rock 1 is lava - porous, dark colored, with a nice shape. Lava can easily break - black pine trees can crush the rock from the pressure of their roots.
1:30 Rock 2 is Napa field stone - very inexpensive in Northern California, used for stock rock walls. Eric finds it hard to find interesting shapes, and the color tends to be rather dull.
2:22 Rocks 3 and 4 are from creeks. Suiseki means "waterstone" in Japanese, and it's the art of Japanese stone appreciation. Eric picked these two rocks based on their coloring and overall shape, including pockets, and recommends that you always think about the orientation you'd use for your final composition when considering if a rock will work.
4:34 Rock 5 is Eric's favorite type! It comes from a rock slide down the side of a mountain in Northern California. It's angular with faceting that creates all kinds of possibilities. It's a very dark mineral with lovely lichen.
5:25 Fun Easter egg from the rock collecting expedition where Eric found Rock 5 - Eric's rockhounding partner!

Think about stones that have interesting shapes, and that are durable - you don't want to use one that will crack! So look for stones that are hard, and that look cool. That's the best!
I have a rock that I like however it is not the right material, it’s a sandstone so not useable. My thought was to cast it and make a concrete version.
