I love when Boney M sings without playback. This was, in my opinion, one of the best Daddy Cool's versions I've ever listened!

Top of the Pops probably insisted on it. And the group jumped on the opportunity. This sounds much better. More raw and you can feel their energy.

Its not actually. Bobby Farrell doesn't sing in any of the original Boney M songs. Bobby Farrel is just the front man, he lip syncs for all of the Boney M songs. This is one of only a handlful of records of Bobby Farrel ever actually singining for the band. Thats why it sounds so very different. The actual male voice for Boney M is Frank Farian. He is the same guy behind Milli Vanilli. Theres a few documentaries about it. It is really interesting.

I thoroughly enjoyed that live version.

I dont care what anyone says. I think they sang extravagantly using their authentic voices and didnt deserve to be called frauds.

agree. well it all depends on the producer anyway😢 one thing for sure is that Farian produced the signature sound of BM which wes difficult to perform live - except this one which in lower key and sounds acoustic unlike official recording - so in big shows they even included backup vocalists.

I completely agree. Bobby Farrell was a really gifted man. Very, very unfair and sad what Farian did to him😢

Thats because this is his real singing voice. Bobby lip syncs on all the actual Boney M songs. Frank Farian is the male singer for Boney M but Bobby is the front man so he lip syncs at all the concerts. This video is one of only a few clips that exist of Bobby actually singing a Boney M song. He attempts the Frank Farian deep voice in another video but he isn't very good at it so I am glad in this clip he uses his natural voice.

Bobby sounds good on this, but Frank's voice just added that extra "drama" that made Boney M's songs come alive.

This sounds much better. Frank’s voice was processed and created in the studio. Bobby’s voice almost sounds like Barry white. And the girls sound like the Supremes.

I do prefer the recorded version but I've got to admit that they can still carry it live and were still pretty good. It's great that somebody uploaded this clip so that it's out there and exists as an alternative version.

@@roldanrosario243 Exactly! Frank Farian himself singing live probably wouldn’t sound like the original recordings either because his vocals were autotune-like, machine inspired creations. A _very_ overrated “singer,” in my opinion. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Estoy sorprendido, me gusta más su voz en este video que la voz del productor en la versión de estudio (y las pistas para las actuaciones con público que he visto aquí en KZread). Incluso prefiero las armonías más naturales de las vocalistas en esta actuación 👌🏻

This was from top of the pops. At the time there were rules saying you had to use the orchestra provided by the musicians union unless you were a band.

Who thinks boney m would have a musical daddy's cool name after 1 of the songs. And the song features in a car advert

I think this is where Prince got Daddy Pop

It's the song what made them so famous, the performing of Bobby, Liz and Marcia is great because it's totally Live sung with a replayed version of the original by Frank Farian produced song. Sorry, Maizie is in the middle of the women.

Bobby Farrell couldn't sing, that's why. And he wasn't able to remember the lines and sometimes forgot them, so they used Farian's playback.

MUSIC WORLD VISION 1970s union rules. At the time artists had to mime the music on top of the pops but not to the record. They had to go into the studio earlier in the day and re-record the music with the top of the pops orchestra and then appear on the show and either sing live to the re-recording or mime to it if they opted to record the vocals at the time too. That’s why the backing track here sounds nothing like the record

@@marguskiis7711 watch any documentary on how top of the pops was made in the 70s, it’s no secret. The vocals here are live, the music is from earlier in the day as recorded by the top of the pops orchestra

So this is what Boney M would have sounded-if they wouldn't have lip-synced 100 % of the time....

Boney M. they sang live wherever it was desired or possible to do so. They also did live world tours and they sang only live. Back then, most TV shows demanded the artists to lip synch. Top of the pops not so, so there you have them singing live. I prefer much better Bobby's real voice to Frank's
