This is a massive find. Considering Missouri was part of the Internal Sea during the Mesozoic. To find fossils from that time is incredibly rare in the Mid West.

It was but very little of the western interior seaway was in Missouri during the cretaceous period. It’s possible mosasaurs and turtles like Archelon could be out in the western half. The eastern half of Missouri was most likely part of Appalachia. I would not doubt it one bit that we could find dinosaurs like Appalachiasaurus and Dryptosaurus. Nodosaurs were also present and obviously hadrosaurs. Not a lot of ceratopsians. If they were. They were very small unlike their cousins in the western half of laramidia. That’s were most of the giant dinosaurs were during the final stages of the Mesozoic era.

1942, Daniel R. Stewart, a geologist with the Missouri Geological Survey He is recognized as the first to discover dinosaur bones in MO. I believe the the reporter said “The first ever Dino bone found in MO” Apparently even local news reporters can’t be bothered with doing any real research before doing a report.

@@robertlackey5845 yes, we know there were dinosaurs, but we don't know as much about them. however given Appalachia was an isolated, relatively flat island continent while topographically diverse Laramidia frequently was connected with Asia, it's possible there was just a lower diversity compared to Laramidia- cf Australia vs Eurasian mammals today

Some people just don’t get the context. From an economic standpoint, the tourism it’ll bring in is great for the small businesses, so if they’re smart, they’ll be educating themselves at least a little to tell people who come looking for the museum it’s in. To some people, it’s neat, just not relevant to them. To people like us, it’s a monumental discovery, but to those whom paleontology isn’t there Thing, it don’t make them backwards. Some people, yes, but not all.
