Bone Daddy Modded Akai Microphone Review!

Музыка

Some sound samples from my new Bone Daddy microphone. A late 60s to early 70s vintage Akai, volume control and screw-on connector added by Bone Daddy himself. It looks mongo cool, sports a dynamic element, cranks out about 1900 ohms of screaming impedance. If that's a thing. Playing thru my ZT lunchbox, first w/o effects, then with a Memphis Mini Boost and a Behringer VD400 delay. These are available from Bone Daddy only occasionally, so check his FB page frequently to snag one when they come up offa his bench: / bonedaddysharmonicamics

A real sleeper. I found one at the thrift store for $3. I use it to record vocals and it is amazing! Notch the mids and it’s just incredible. I own 2 now, got one NIB on ebay for $15. I’m betting in a few months, someone is gonna let the cat out of the bag and these will go to $200 each. They’re THAT good! The ADM-13, the BEST dynamic mic for under $200, easy. More importantly, nothing modern even comes close.

Also, it’s non directional, but that only makes it work, and sound, like a condenser; if you don’t abuse it. I use phantom power, but I also use a mic preamp and a compressor, as per my Mackie board. Singing thru headphones these sound incredible. But you won’t need much with the phantom power on. You can’t hit it too hard, either; or it will crap out. But for that Jim Morrison at half speed on quaaludes effect; it’s just otherworldly. Besides, hitting mics that hard is for stage, not studio.

Try em for vocals when recording. They’re incredible. Like an SM57 on steroids. Notch out the mids and these sound incredible. They’re an instant shot of Testosterone!

How is the feedback threshold? I love my old Sonotones, but they don't work out in most live scenarios.

Yes, I have a couple of the old ceramic Sonotones as well - great tone, good for recording, not so great live. This one has a volume control, so while it does feed back, it's very manageable with the volume control, and the usual don't-stand-in-front-of-your-amp considerations. I've only used it during rehearsal so far, and it wasn't any worse than, say, my bulletini, and considerably better than my old Shure green bullet.
