Allow me to add a 5th reason: safety. I was looking for earbuds that would stay in my ears after wasting money on expensive ones that hurt and popped out. Bone conduction headphones were what the folks at my local running store suggested, and after using them for a week I see why. I can listen to my music same as ever, they stay put no matter how much I sweat, and I can also hear other runners, bikes, cars, and animals coming from behind. I am sold! Thank you for explaining how this technology works.

I have nerve damage in one of my ears from a skull fracture ( wear your helmets when skateboarding kids!) Its left me with like 30% hearing in that one ear, I can hear but can't make out what is being said or where sound is coming from. Will these improve my hearing or will it just be a bunch of noise?

One of my pros: doesn't increase the heat in your ears as with the traditional closed-back headphones. I've experienced rapid ear wax buildup and I've heard that covered ears yield faster microbial growth. Another pro Is that when I'm working with these on, I don't have to take them off to turn around and acknowledge another person or their conversation.

Another advantage of bone conduction hearing devices is that they do not cover the ear (you already mentioned that part) but what you didn't mention is that it actually complies with traffic laws, for example, in Denmark you're not allowed to cycle with earphones on as it causes accidents when you can't quite hear the traffic around you. but with bone conduction, that's not a problem at all cause you're not covering the ear.

If you want the Bass experience - put the earplugs on. This simulates the noise cancellation of the typical earbuds but it negates the whole purpose of hearing what is happening around you which is annoying for me as a cyclist and is ultimately UNSAFE. I just bought a pair of Openmove by Aftershokz today and took it on a bike ride and absolutely loved it. No ear stress, fits perfectly in my helmet with sunglasses. I can listen to music and make calls and hear my Varia warn me of incoming vehicles from behind. Thumbs up totally !

Really glad to hear this review from an audiologist! It is encouraging to hear that these are safe from a health standpoint. I am considering these for running--as a female I don't like to run without an awareness of my environment, but my runs are getting awfully boring. I have TMJ issues, so one of my concerns was the potential for the vibration to agitate my jaw. I think I will have to try them out for myself, but it was encouraging to hear that when you were working out you didn't seem to notice the vibration. Thanks for the video!

I just found your channel today and subscribed! I lost my hearing on my left ear about six years back due to an inner ear virus, I have about 10% of my hearing capacity remaining. I saw an article earlier today for the aftershokz titanium, which I read up on and some reviews. After work I ran to a pharmacy that had a demo and I could not believe it but they worked. I could care less about the overall sound quality when I could actually hear music from my left ear again. It absolutely amazing. I work at a power plant and around very loud equipment so hours and hours of walking and taking logs gets so dull. I love audio books and podcasts and bone conduction headphones were an absolute perfect tool. I looked at headphone ear plug combinations but I didn’t want to just plug my ears and drown everything out because I do need to hear my surroundings and my radio. Also ear plug headphone combo’s have a lower decibel rating than actual ear plugs and I want to protect my hearing as much as possible. So it works perfectly because I can have my ear plugs in, I can hear my surroundings and radio and the bone conduction headphones work even better with ear plugs, especially when I just use it for spoken word media like books and podcasts

Bone conduction headsets are especially good for any situation in public where you want to be aware of your surroundings. You don't have the best sound quality, but can be aware of what's going on around you. I wear the Trekz Aftershokz headset for road cycling because in the ear headsets are dangerous. They block your hearing vehicle traffic. Because of that our cycling club disallows their use for our group rides. I would also recommend them for folks who run or walk on biking/walking paths. Nothing is more irritating than coming up behind a runner on a path and shouting "on your right" and having them not be able to hear you because their ears are plugged up with a headset. This would also be applicable for individuals walking around streets and traffic. A company called "Coros" has now also come out with this technology built into cycling helmets.

I have bluetooth bone conduction and i like this hearing method,,i tried a experiment with bone conduction and i downloaded a frequency generator application and i try a 22KHz tone and i heard this frequency and for me that was very impressive and still unbelievable !!! Due to bluetooth it limits at 22KHz (due to 44.1KHz samplerate) after that i tried with piezoelectric sensor as speaker and i touch it next to my ears and i hear maximum at ~40KHz but it hurts and with spectrum analyzer i checked if theres harmonics etc but on the air (normal hearing) i hear at ~19KHz. I dont know if older ages can hear above 20KHz with bone conduction.

I've been using bone conduction for a few years now. I've had cheap corded headphones & I have owned all types of Bluetooth ones we well. Even purchased some ear bugs & I can tell you that bone conduction is the best. I can workout with them on, I work outside & they don't slide out of my ears due to sweat or ear wax. Plus I can have them on & still hear my surroundings. They suck for loud nosies like running the lawnmower but they should come with plugs to put in your ears to fix that issue. Drawback: sound quality isn't that great compared to the ear buds or over the ear headphones but hey it's a small sacrifice to gain so much freedom & reliability.

As for sound quality I find it is good for my needs which are audiobooks, meetings and music. Bone conduction headphones can have varying degrees of water resistance or waterproof levels, so they could be quite durable for something so small to natural wear and tear over time from your sweat and moisture. This also means it's easy to wipe and wash with a cloth or alcohol wipe to sanitize it.

I like to listen to music while I work, this means having earbuds in or headphones on for an extended period of time but I've noticed that after an hour or two my ears start hurting (no matter how well fitted headphones I use). For me that was the reason to try bone conducting ones, they hurt less and I can still communicate with my coworkers without having to stop the music. Best decision ever.

Dr. Cliff, thanks for the explanation! As a musician, I have sensorineural hearing loss bilaterally, I make sure to use high fidelity earplugs at every loud event/occasion, now when I want to listen to music or work out, I have to use my in ear monitor, which means having to take out both my CIC hearing aids (my audiologist told me eventually I'll have to get the behind the ear ones) which means carrying a hardcase. I was wondering if you recommend bone conduction headphones or the transducer for android devices to transmit Bluetooth to the hearing aids at the loss of quality are my options? Thank you so much and please know that I have now subscribed to you. Thanks!

Hi Sebastian. I think you are asking if the fidelity of sound transferred by BC headphones or BT hearing aids is good. You would likely want to avoid BC headphones and stick to BT hearing aids that can compensate for the loss, or use a set of circumaural BOSE headphones with an equalizer app on your smartphone.

Great video- really enjoyed. Maybe I missed it on video or in comments, I like bone conduction for voice calls or audio books, as they do have adequate quality and you can hear things around you in your environment even though you are listening to your headphones.

One more reason is specifically targeted to swimming, it's a bit tricky sometimes to make a perfect seal between the ear and conventional earbuds when swimming. But with bone conduction headphones you don't have to deal with that

I have sensorineural hearing loss and wanted to know if it would be beneficial using these types of head phones vs traditional to protect my hearing. I assume it will not work like a hearing aid and tailor sound to my hearing loss.

I dont think it will work if you have sensorineural hearing loss since the nerves are impaired hence sounds transmitted to the eardrums via bone conduction wont get registered or sent to the brain

Great introduction to Bone Conduction Headphones. One question though: Do they also double up as 'Hearing Aids'? Do they have microphones? I have to wear hearing aids - and I just found out why for me it is imperative: I listened to the output on my computer to a variable frequency generator and was appalled to find I could not hear any frequency above 700Hz. Until I retired I was a Piano Tuner - in a prestigious Opera House - not only pianos, though, but Harpsichords as well. As my hearing degenerated I turned to getting some expensive hearing aids. Then discovered they distorted the tones I was listening to in a most unfortunate way called 'aliasing'. This is when a tone is modified and caused to have another tone riding on it - like a deep vibrato. This can be adjusted in 'settings' on the hearing aids but with the result that the sound level goes down. Which makes difficulty in tuning Harpsichords in a live environment. Hence my interest in using Bone Conduction Headphones - and - can they be used as hearing aids?? I look forward to your reply Dr. Olson.

I do have one before(stolen) My concern is that if I put the volume always at Max , compare to traditional one, will I suffer more cochlea damage? My thought was because the vibration will sent over yr skull, so not all vibration goes in to my cochlea, And My cochlea would be less damaged. But these do have some cons. Sometimes when u are in a very noisy enviorment ie Near the plane engine/ Underground , u might not hear any at all. But they do perform really nice in a quieter place , very small volume could hear it nice already
