Bonding Bunnies 101 - The Bonding Process (Step by Step)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This video is the full step-by-step rabbit bonding process. In this video, I go over everything about bonding rabbits. This video focuses mainly on the physical spaces necessary for the bonding process and when to gradually expand the area the bunnies occupy. There are many behaviors to look out for along the way so you need to make sure you follow each step before moving on to the next. Enjoy!

I had similar very easy experience thanks to Vet app to get them fixed at the same time. I had them for a couple weeks prior in their own enclosures in the same area so they could smell each other, taking turns to let each bun run around the neutral space on their own & get used to each other smells in the neutral area. My buns were 1 male and 1 female and I didn't want cute af baby buns, so I got them appointment with the vet. They asked if I would like they put together after their op while they were still loopy from the pain meds to help with the bond. By the time I went to pick them up they were bonded 4 life and lived happily after!

I'm a day and a half into bonding my rabbits and this has been so helpful! I've followed it religiously OTHER than the stress bonding in the carry case/in the car. I'm really trying to make sure their bond is based on love and curiosity rather than fear, and so far so good. Each of these steps have worked fine without using the stress bonding, so I highly recommend it to others who are also not keen to use fear as a method! Thanks so much for this video though. So thorough and well-explained!

My partner and I bonded our bunnies super slowly. They lived in separate rooms for the first six or more months, then we moved them into the same room with two separate pens, for a couple of months. Then we moved them out to the living room in the same pen with dividing panels down the middle, for about four months. It really paid off because when we eventually did put them in the same pen, there was no problem! It was very easy and we were very surprised as all the videos on bonding make it out to be such a big deal. We tried the "neutral territory in a tiny pen (3 panels)" method once when they were younger but they lashed out aggressively and we chickened out. I'm glad we did! It ended up being so much easier than all that. Really glad we never bothered with stress bonding, it didn't feel right to us to bond rabbits together using fear and it turned out to not be necessary at all.

Bunny hierarchy is confusing. We found out that two bucks who otherwise would not get along, they do fine when they are with the other already bonded does. I think the big doe somehow keeps the peace by grooming both bucks so they don't feel a need to fight each other for dominance. The other doe gives no shits as long as she isn't bothered too often. Both bucks try to hide their heads under the big doe when they get scared, lol. It's almost like she's the big mama, but also the submissive one.

I was prepared for the bonding process. The black bunny was out and about and the brown one had been ina cage too long. Within 10 minutes they were kissing and running around. You have really good points. I didn't know all of this when I introduced my new boy to my female. My first son Stewie passed in the summer, so I wanted to get my girl another so she wouldn't feel lost. I also wanted a neutered male so he wouldn't traumatize her. He did try to mount her a few times although she's spayed too. But I just told him to stop, and made a little sound with my mouth and he stopped. Two months after, I had to move in with my mom to help looking after her. I had to buy a pen because she has so much stuff and she didn't want them free. But they have surprisingly done very well. My female is a senior for her large size. But my boy has now taken to care for her a lot - which I didn't think he would do since he's younger. Rabbits are amazing. Unfortunately I have no option for a larger space until my mom passes away. Then they'll probably get the living room.

Sterling looks exactly like my rabbit!! His name is Bunzo and I inherited him when his owner died. I’m at least his 5th owner. He has been passed around a lot, which I think has led to his having trust issues. I think he is finally realizing that this is his forever home. I would have never thought I could love a bunny as much as I love my Bunzo. I definitely didn’t realize that they had so much personality or that they were as intelligent as he has proven to be. At first I was very hesitant about even taking custody of him…but I was talked/guilted into it. It turned out to be the best decision I have ever made! Im completely and utterly enamored with my Bunzo. His full name is Bunzo T. Rabbit. The T standing for Tiberius, of course..lol Anyway, your videos are very informative and entertaining. You have such an expressionful face. I think it’s in the eyebrow manipulation. It’s truly adorable.😉 keep up the great content for any bunny owner.

thank you so much for this video! i took notes and think i'm ready after a lot of other research to try bonding my well-tempered male rabbit with a very friendly and gentle girl bunny I found at the shelter yesterday. he has gotten along with dogs and cats in the past, even when i let my cat come out and hang out in his room - sometimes they even lay side by side and put their heads together. he is rarely afraid of my cat and always plops right down beside her. (she is more skeptical of him, but usually doesnt mind.) i did make sure they spent about 6 months apart in separate rooms at first to make sure they got used to each other's scent, and i do not leave them together alone when i am asleep or not home. i am hoping he will have as easy of an experience with his rabbit bonding mate. i am a little worried because i do work full time, so during the 7 day period in the pens i wont be able to supervise them during the day, but i really don't want to separate them. fingers crossed it will be love at first sight

How would I go about feeding them separately during this time and I'm also worried I won't notice any behaviours at night even if I'm sleeping in the same room. Also would it be an issue if my female rabbit already has a routine in terms of where she sleeps, naps, etc? Is it okay to break that routine?

I had a question about the first few days/nights of the bonding process… I took my two bunnies for a drive yesterday for the first time, and then I put the two in a box. They were really solid the whole time, and they even ate alfalfa together. When it got late and time for dinner time for the two, I separated the two into their individual pens so they could eat and use their litter boxes. Is this advisable? Or are they supposed to stay together until they are bonded? Thank you in advance!

Great video thank you. It's seems like this process is continuous and they are not returned to their own hutches each day. Is that correct? Also as I have one hutch for each of them I'm assuming at the end I only use one hutch and clean it out completely before housing both of them in the same hutch. Bunny 1 is using the laundry as her space and that's were I'll put them in the end so I assume I spray that area too. But is there trauma associated with putting her in a space that used to be hers and is now neutralised because I will clean it with white vinegar?

Question!! We have a 7 month old neutered male Holland lop and we’re thinking about getting another one. We found on we love that we haven’t gotten yet but it is an 8 week old male. Wondering if that is ok to do and bond them once he is neutered as well?

I have two rabbits, one is a sweet heart who wanted to snuggle my other rabbit right away, but the other rabbit is a bit of a diva lol! They’re not bonded but when I did try to bond them, they did well, but I could not for the life of me get her to stop nipping him. They would be cuddling and she would then randomly nip! It was always a hard nip too. I could never move on to the final step because of the nipping. Is there any tips to how to get her to not nip so hard? Thanks!

So I'm getting a male Mini Rex in about 2-3 months and this is what I had planned. Please LMK if this cage setup is ok. (I've done a lot of research and my mom had a bunny, but I'm a first-time owner.) I have a space to let the rabbit in that's 2'6" by 10'6" (in my bedroom). One end will have a medium dog cage with the food and litter box and stuff in it. Outside the cage will be bedding and toys and stuff. The bunny will almost always have the entire space to go in save for when I'm cleaning. Is that enough room?

Hi Haley, I'm trying to bond 2 rabbits, but got the first one 2 weeks ahead of the second. Didn't know at that time when we'd get the second and we wanted to free roam her and were on our way there. Now we have 2 buns and the 1st is quite territorial. Now we would like to scrub and remove the smell, but we are on hardwood floors and they recommend to not use vinegar on those. Can you help me find another product to remove the smell and not damage the floors?

I think I’ve watched this video and the other bonding series videos like 3 times already. I am getting a bunny to foster (and hopefully adopt) as bunny dating is currently unavailable. Any suggestions on what I should do with the foster rabbit when I first bring her home? I’m sure she’s going to be scared of all of us.

I have bonded my mini lop doe Blueberry with another mini lop, and I wish I didn't bother bonding her with another rabbit. We had such a wonderful relationship with her, and that's why we thought she also needed to have a relationship with her own kind. She always looked so joyful. However, we saw a big change in her personality after the bond. She just became a follower, and it's very sad to see. I'm not going to separate them, but I just wanted to send a warning because all you hear about is its good for the bunny.

We got two bucks as babies and have kept them separated sense they were 3 months old. They each have their own xpen side by side and we have switched them in the pens regularly. They have both been neutered for a month now. They clean each other through the wire of their pens so I’m hoping they won’t be too hard to bond. However, we have let them both free range through our entire house sense getting them. We would give both of them a few hours a day and switch them out. So we have no neutral areas. And with COVID we are not comfortable going to someone else’s home..... any suggestions? Maybe the living room rug were they both hang out next to the x opens?

Well this is good to know, seeing as we just got a rabbit for my Tu Shen. Xiao Wu is the new bunny and will be bonded to Shen after Shen's surgery. We got a spare bedroom that has not been touched by any rabbit we can use as a neutral territory. In the mean time, Xiao Wu has one half of my bedroom Shen has never been to and Shen gets the other half where he has been since we got him.

Hi! My bunny is living in our living room and has been doing that for a little over a year now (been living there since I got him). I want to get a bunny who can also live there with him, but as you say they can’t be in somebody else’s territory but I have no other space for them to live together except the living room. How can I make the living room a territory for both of them? I really need to get him a friend, thank you!

Is this all done in 1 day? Or are each steps taken daily? Like do I take them for a car ride and then when I get home put them in a small neutral space or wait until the next day to start their small bonding space.. I’m just confused if this is step by step in a day or steps I should take daily. I understand it’s up to my buns, but just in general I’m curious as to when to apply the steps?? If that’s makes any type of sense lol… any response is helpful 😊

Im currently in the bonding process. At this point, I dont know where to ask for help anymore. My bunnies (8yo male and 6yo female) are getting along fine now. It's my second time bonding them because the first time bonding them I gave them free roam too soon and they started fighting. Now I'm being cautious with space. They got to a size 3x2 pen, and I'm thinking of stopping there for now. See, they're not fighting, my female gives my male kisses, no one is getting bullied....but my male wont return the kisses and that makes her mad. They aren't lovey dovey and all cuddly....is that still good? Is it a sign I should seperate them? I'm desperate for advice because im so scared I won't be there to seperate them if a bad fight occurs.
