Bonanza - Episode 44 - The Savage - Adam rides up on some Indians wanting to harm a white woman they believed was a mountain spirit.
The Savage
Director: James Neilson
Writers: Joseph Stone (as Joe Stone), Paul King
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 3 December 1960 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Adam rides up on some Indians wanting to harm a white woman they believed was a mountain spirit. He kills them but not before they wound him. The woman nurses him back to health but the rest of the tribe is still out there looking for her.
Reviews:
"This Bonanza story has Pernell Roberts on the way to town when he goes to a Shoshoni burial ground and finds Anna-Lisa living there and trading in on the plains Indian legend of the White Buffalo Woman. When some Shoshoni discover she's flesh and blood they try to kill her and Adam Cartwright is wounded.
Anna-Lisa cares for him and it's quite the romantic idyll they have. But with Shoshoni looking for her and the Cartwrights looking for him it cant last.
Romances never last long with Cartwright men and this is no exception." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"Characters involved: Ruth Halversen and Chief Chato
Main Cartwright character: Adam
Anna-Lisa (who played in Black Saddle) played the White Buffalo Woman whom the Indians thought had magical powers to heal the sick. They also thought she wasn't human. That caused her some problems when the Chief's son touched her and learned something else.
But that's only part of the story. When Adam tries to rescue her, one of the brother's shoots him with an arrow before he kills him. Now with two dead men, two dead Indians, and an injured Adam, Ruth has to save him. Of course anytime a woman tends a man who's sick, we know what happens, and this episode is no exception.
I must be honest. I don't really care for Adam, so this episode didn't do much for me. But I will say I loved the bantering at the beginning of this episode when Adam and Ben are arguing and Hoss and Joe are sitting outside listening. That's classic Bonanza, and I love it! Hoss and Joe can pull off any scene together.
There wasn't a lot of fighting in this episode - basically the Indians did what they seem to do best - kill white men - then leave.
I won't revel too much, but there is a cheesy scene between Adam and the woman, then another after Adam is discovered by his family...Oh well, they can't always get it perfect!" Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com

"I don't have anything against education, as long as it doesn't interfere with your thinking." Ok, wrap your thinking around that..the scene at 34:51 is the LA Reservoir, and seems almost the same spot where The Andy Griffith Show and Combat! (and other shows) were shot.... Aww, Don Quixote was not a crackpot, he was a dreamer.. As for windmills, I have chased them, and yes, I usually found myself face first in the dirt. The episode is bleh with that formula love gimmick. And as usual for those Hollywood days, formula Native Americans. The music track is one continuous symphony. Adam in his latest love reminds me of Capt. Kirk....

Ben was right It makes sense. Now we have Berkeley university law professors (and many other university institutions) thinking that men can birth children and can no longer define what a woman is. Education has fell on its face and is now an agenda and ideology rather than utilizing the Socratic method with the addition of facts, data and statistics. I say this as a black Master degree title holder in electrical engineering and a MBA.

@@59Alaskan When you think about it, Landon's next project, LHOTP, had long-term relationships with wags. All it would've taken was a bit of thought and creative writing. I think it would've been quite interesting to see how a love interest interacted with a mostly male cast over time. It also isn't very realistic when you've got a man in his fifties and three men in their 20s and 30s with nary a wag between them.

@@CathyKitson I don't use her as "an example for all women". Of all the women that had love interests with one of the Cartwrights they could have picked an unfeminine tom boy type to be the one that finally got hitched with them. But that seems unlikely. More likely it would have been a normal woman and unless she was confined to only one part that for certain would have been a disruptive influence in such a masculine household. There's just no way around it.
