Bonanza - Silent Thunder | Episode 45 | TV WESTERN SERIES | Cowboy | English

Bonanza - Episode 45 - Silent Thunder - Angry with the way a beautiful deaf girl is treated by her father, a sheepherder living in a remote mountain cabin, Little Joe takes it upon himself to teach her sign language so they can communicate better.
Silent Thunder
Director: Robert Altman
Writer: John Furia (as John Furia Jr.)
Stars: Michael Landon, Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 10 December 1960 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Stella Stevens guest-stars as Ann Croft, a sheltered deaf-mute girl. Joe Cartwright tries to teach Ann sign language, only to be thwarted by the girl's fiercely overprotective father Albie (Albert Salmi). In the course of John Furia Jr.'s teleplay, Ann ends up saving her father's life, and also falls in love with Joe (the kiss of death for any Bonanza leading lady!) Also appearing are Kenneth McKenna as Sam, James Griffith as the Preacher, Sherwood Price as Eb and Harry Swoger as Tom. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"Characters: Sam and Ann Croft, Albie
Cartwright involved: Little Joe.
Missing: Adam and Hoss do not appear in this episode.
This is an interesting episode. I recall a Little House on the Prairie episode where Laura teaches a deaf friend sign language. Similar to this episode, he falls in love with her. He also almost gets hit by a wagon. I found myself comparing these two episodes.
I've decided I like LHOTP's version better. Why? Because I thought the whole "I get what your talking about" scene was absolutely cheesy and way over-played. I don't understand how she understood what he was doing. Laura showed door and window - things you can touch and then sign. Little Joe didn't have a clue. And the whole "Fell this and understand" concept...just cannot believe it..." Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com
"This particular Bonanza episode, Silent Thunder is a very touching story that borrows no small measure from the classic film Johnny Belinda where Jane Wyman won her Oscar. The part of the deaf mute girl is played very touchingly by Stella Stevens.
Michael Landon as Little Joe takes center stage in this story. He's got the Lew Ayres role. Of course Landon is not a medical man, but he's taken an interest in her in a kindly way and sees that she's a great deal brighter than her father Kenneth MacKenna would care to see.
MacKenna in the Charles Bickford role is a hard bitten mountain trapper who lives in isolation despite occasional visits. MacKenna has a whole lot of issues himself dealing with the death of his wife giving birth to Stevens.
For a while I thought the story was going to venture into Rain country when preacher James Griffith visited, but it stayed with the Johnny Belinda model as fellow trapper Albert Salmi who can't get his itch scratched in town starts looking at Stevens for that service.
Silent Thunder works because of what Stella Stevens does with the part. Stevens usually played some dumb sex kittens, in this television episode the woman proved she could do more than that." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

    That was done really well. The scene in the rain where she realizes what communicating is was excellent acting from both of them. The father finally coming to terms with her at the end was heart rending. One of those Bonanza episodes they really did right.

    As someone who has struggled with learning disability all my life, it is a blessing to have someone who had the faith to help and see that every person who has a disability has a chance to improve their circumstance if they receive help and support. For me it was my parents especially my mom. Doctors told her to put me in an institution because I wouldn’t amount to much. She persevered and taught me to trust in the Lord and He’s helped me abundantly. It was hard but I graduated from college with honors, am married and have a family. So don’t give up on loved ones who have special needs. They can be a blessing to you too and teach you about love, perseverance, compassion and to be merciful.

    This episode has me in tears of joy, I've always seen Stella Stevens in a sexy sometimes innocent role, as a beautiful graceful feminine role. This is a first, another first with Bonanza. And again the Father, Ben encouraging the son to finish what he started and bringing the scenario full circle. Very beautiful when a father realizes hope when he didn't see this hope before, and someone else show's him the way. Stella Stevens plays a sexy singer in Elvis Presley's; Girls, Girls, Girls.

    At 20:42 the scene is just like the breakthrough moment from The Miracle Worker where Helen Keller's deaf tutor, Anne Sullivan, spells "water" in her hand while pumping water into it. That scene always brings tears, a real 'watershed' moment!

  • @lynettepalecek3141

    @lynettepalecek3141

    Anne Sullivan wasn't deaf. Anne Sullivan was blind when she was young, but a doctor was able to restore about 90% of her sight through surgery. Also, it was Alexander Graham Bell who taught Helen Keller how to do sign language in Helen's hand. He also taught her how to speak by taking her hand and letting her feel the placement of the tongue and lips during speech. Helen was taught by Anne Sullivan how to write on ridged paper. Helen wrote a letter to her mother when she was 8 years old. She first spoke when she was 10 years old in 1890. Hollywood has a habit of not getting some of the facts about famous people correct.

    I read where Albert Salmi later, killed his wife by shooting her, then went upstairs and committed suicide by shooting himself. So sad. It seems that on inordinate amount of famous actors, actresses, singers 🎶 wind up killing themselves. Maybe 🤔 it’s just the price tag for notoriety that they pay 💰. Personally, I think 🤔 that it’s worth it. The price is just too high 🤑💰for me to pay.

Just because the man is her father doesn't mean he has the right to deprive her of a most basic aspect of her humanity and keep her like an animal. Since the wrong being done was so serious Joe was not meddling but taking appropriate action.

    In the history of American television no other western ever topped Bonanza. I also feel, that remakes of old movies never live up to the original movies. For this reason when they tried to revive Bonanza with Michael Landon's son, as Little Joe, the show never had a chance.

    I really liked this episode and it was good what Little Joe did to help Annie. But, I find it very condesending that Joe said to Ben, "well what do you want me to do, MARRY HER"? What an arrogant attitude towards this woman. I find it quite hypocritical that JOE can go around every town and women he chooses, to steal kisses and rub all up on the women of his choosing. And as soon as a woman tries to show her feelings he acts all high and mighty. Her character was way to good for a man like him anyway. She's got an innocence to her and much more beautiful then MANY of the floosy's he runs with on this show. He was so demeaning to Annie, in the way he shoved her away from him and the way he talked behind her back to BEN. The best thing that could of happened to him would be to get a sweet, good hearted woman like Annie. She's a prettier woman then he is cute for a guy when it comes to looks. Annie had to put up with one trying to rape her and shove her around and another man (Father) slapping her hand with a strap and then Joe shoving her and yelling at her; just for her trying to express her feelings to him. How can he claim she does not love him? HE does NOT know what she feels in her HEART. She tried to show him she indeed DID LOVE him, with a KISS! That's not a friends gesture, that is a LOVE gesture!

  • @CathyKitson

    @CathyKitson

    7 ай бұрын

    You're forgetting the era, the 1850s or 60s. There'd have been little hope for Annie. The only help she could have got long-term would be from a father or husband. Perhaps a brother, but she didn't have one. Joe was trying to be a friend to her. He showed her kindness and affection that she'd never known. He's only quite a young kid himself and he didn't know how to handle it. He knew he'd hurt her and apologised. He was honest to the father about what had happened. He was too honourable to take advantage of her. As for the father, he was ignorant and brutish, not for the strapping, but for treating her like an animal. Albi was just a rapist. You're being very unfair to Joe who was merely trying to help.
