Bonanza - Episode 10 - The Magnificent Adah - When an actress named Adah Menken comes into town, Ben considers marrying her, but his sons have other ideas. Meanwhile, trouble arrives when Adah's old lover, washed-up heavyweight boxer John C. Regan, comes along seeking his former glory. Written by Anonymous on IMDb.com
The Magnificent Adah
Director: Christian Nyby
Writer: Donald S. Sanford
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre:Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 14 November 1959 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Adah Isaac Menken and her touring company come to Virginia City to perform the reknowned "Mazeppa". Intrigued by the picture of a naked woman riding horseback, Hoss and Joe are eager to see the show. They sneak out of the house and hurry to the performance only to be pulled out of line by their older brother. Fearing they're about to be reprimanded, Adam scolds them for being late and hopes the best seats aren't gone. During the show, Hoss is confused. The leading lady doesn't look anything like the woman on the poster. Joe says the woman on the poster is playing the part of a man, which just confuses Hoss more. After the show the boys go to the saloon and Hoss is dying to know if she really was naked when she rode out on the horse. After some gentle teasing, Adam assures him that she wore tights. Written on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"This episode involves a real person from Western history. Adah Issac Menken was a famous actress of the time and performed the spectacular "Mazeppa" around the world. It was well known because she played the role of the leading man and was strapped "naked" to a horse. She wore tights, but it was scandalous at the time and drew crowds. She was married three times. John Heenan, the "Benecia Boy", was her second husband and physically abused her. At the time of her performance in Virginia City in 1864, she was married to her third husband. Born in 1835, she would've been younger than Adam and maybe a year older than Hoss. Definitely not the older woman she appears in this episode." Written by jennifer-730 on IMDb.com

The Cartwrights have been shot, beaten, maimed, and tossed about, but like Wiley Coyote, they bounce right back to do it all over again. I still enjoy this show, even after all these years.

There are so many terrific scenes between the three brothers in these early episodes. And the rapport between Hoss and Little Joe is magical. And then add Adam to the mix and you have an acting bonanza 😉

How young they all were in this early show: Ben, as always, offers the strange wisdom that sometimes clouds love's true view (or a man's for that matter). Little Joe looked truly not more than 21 or 22, all were thinner, leaner, and even Hoss's hat style had yet to come to the one we know. The episode showed how much promise the show had for a long future. Thanks, Grjingo!

Great writing, awesome characters, and surprisingly complex plots! This was a one of a kind show that can't be redone or replaced. Also lucky Adah! She got to kiss Adam Cartwrite!!!!!!! Mine too, and I was kind of too young to think on those things then. Also Steve McQueen was boyish in expressions and easier to relate to at that age. I watched Have Gun will Travel, but never understood it so started watching episodes this year. Funny, Mikey Dolenz of the Monkeys was Circus Boy back then, and my older sis would drop me in front of that one...but I always liked the westerns for some reason. Whole families gathered to watch Bonanza in those days.

Serving lobster is anachronistic. It was still considered peasant food in the 1860s. It started to become more mainstream in the 1880s. It didn't become a delicacy until WWII, rich people ate it because it wasn't rationed.

It was a different time. Sadly, people can not see it in the lens of the 1800s. They only see things the way they are now. That is very sad! The world greatly changed after 1914.

I know, it makes no sense at all. And Ben was even standing there with a big smile making excuses for why it was perfectly reasonable for Adah to be fawning over the big bully brute Regan after he nearly blinded and killed Little Joe. Completely ridiculous. Whoever wrote this story was an idiot.

People are talking about how she was a fool to go back to her ex-husband, which, yeah, she was, but you have to admit that if she married Ben, it would be a pretty weird dynamic. I mean, having at least one of your new step-sons in love with you is pretty awkward.
