The Long Night
Director: William Witney
Writers: George Stackalee, E.M. Parsons
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 6 May 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Hoping to meet the deadline for a crucial business transaction, Adam Cartwright rushes to the town of Bowline, with a bank draft in hand. En route, he is ambushed by, and forced to change clothes with, an escaped convict named Poindexter (Bing Russell, who later joined Bonanza in the semiregular role of Sheriff Clem). Later on Adam is arrested by the posse searching for Poindexter-a posse led by one Mr. Trace (James Coburn), who knows all too well that he has the wrong man in custody, but who intends to see Adam hang all the same. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"At the same time that Adam Cartwright is taking a $10,000.00 endorsed bank draft to Virginia City, a posse is raised by Sheriff Frank Ferguson is raised to go after a pair of escaped convicts from the state prison one of whom is James Coburn, one mean and deadly dude.
I won't go into the plot details but Coburn has the posse thinking he's a prison guard and Pernell Roberts is a prisoner he's caught. Coburn plays the posse like piccolos with the exception of Frank Ferguson and Whit Bissell. Most especially he's got young punk deputy Jack Chaplain thinking that lynching is just the thing to do.
Coburn is a study in mesmerizing evil in this Bonanza story." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"Pernell Roberts is given his own show as we see Ben send Adam out to deposit a large bank draft for the purchase of cattle. As soon as he sets off we get a rider screaming into town to tell the sheriff that there has been a break-out at the prisoner and two convicts are on the loose. From the first few minutes of the show the plot has been presented as we follow Adam on his encounter with convicts.
In a near-by town the sheriff gets a posse together. Most are common townsfolk but one is a young buck who has a desire to get a notch in his gun by shooting someone. He gets a badge and they all set off to find the convicts.
While Adam is riding, he gets stopped by a prison guard. However, he is no prison guard but happens to be one of the convicts. He makes Adam remove his clothes and wear the prison garb. So Adam is left walking in prison clothing in an area that is being patrolled by the local posse.
As you may think, the show continues until the posse catches up with Adam. They also meet up with convict, still in prison guard clothing, and team up with him. With help from the rouge guard some of the men want to hang Adam at the nearest tree. When the sheriff protest the young buck teams up with the fake prison guard to by-pass the sheriff and get his first kill.
The plot for this episode is one used many times in westerns. In fact it will be used a number of time in other Bonanza shows throughout the run. And the show is predictable from the beginning.
Pernell Roberts gives his usual nonchalant performance as he has no emotion even when a rope is presented for his hanging. He appeared, just as us viewers also do, that we all know the ending so lets just get it over. The only interesting event is to see how some posse members turns from town folks to blood-thirsty animals. A predictable show with predictable results." Written by kfo9494 on IMDb.com

James Coburn seemed to always enjoy playing the bad guy. A good actor. Yet always the heathern. He would force a kiss on a woman in the westerns. What fools for a posse. Atleast Adam always kept his cool. Good episode.

Yeah that was a great episode and I was so surprised to see Kurt Russell's father and how much they look alike but if you like Adam.. the very best episode ever with Adam being the main star of the episode along with Lee Marvin.. if you haven't seen it already you have to watch the episode entitled The Crucible.. Adam should have won an Oscar for his performance in this episode.. I could not take my eyes off this guy and his acting was amazing!!

I'm still amazed at how they can come up with new ways to make a gripping episode. And yes, Genevieve, I noticed that, too. There, that makes me feel better.

Therefore I say, that this is one more of the totally unrealistic episodes. Nevertheless of course: Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing this old series. Best regards, luck and health.

@@godblessusa1036 well from what I can find out they have been using chemtrails since the forty’s. I saw some old black and white film clips showing them spraying them and they look like what we see today. As to what they called them I cannot remember at this time. I’m getting older and my memory isn’t what it used to be. They were however showing the films on some old weather footage. People probably never gave it much thought back then, I know when I was younger I didn’t. I Really just started paying attention a few years ago. Thank you 🙏

8:55 Started fairly serious but then we get introduced to the eclectic posse. :D Are you imagining what each of those men will do? Feels like the kid will get killed. I'm hoping that the old guy saves the day but I doubt that he will. ( The scene with the prisoners was too unbelievable. No-one, especially a prison guard would turn his back on any prisoner, let alone one he just double-crossed! Would be fairly easy to make that more believable. The guard's clothes don't solve the chain problem. I assume they'll shoot it off.) 18:32 So that's why Adam blabbed about the $10,000 bank draft. So that the old man could tell this prisoner. 34:30 Hey, it's getting good! I thought that it was going to be more comedic. Actually, Adam should have recognized that the "guard" had the man's horse because he deals in horses. At some point, I expect Adam to show that he doesn't have any marks from the chains but the other two do.
