Writers: Preston Wood, Elliott Arnold
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 14 October 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
On behalf of his father Ben Cartwright, Hoss delivers a large sum of money to the town of Dutchman Flats. Upon his arrival, however, Hoss is arrested by Sheriff Stedman (Denver Pyle) on a charge of bank robbery. Stedman knows that Hoss is innocent, but he's anxious to prove his worth to the townspeople. Stedman's plan goes horribly awry when the angry citizens form a lynch mob.
Reviews:
"While Lorne Greene is waiting for $12,000.00 in cash at a land office being delivered by Dan Blocker, Hoss has been arrested by Sheriff Denver Pyle in a nearby town when he suspects the money could be part of loot from a recent bank robbery.
There's murder involved here also as banker Roy Roberts's son-in-law was killed and the only description they have is the robber was a big fellow, Easy to see why this would be hung on Dan Blocker.
Pyle is a man not up to the job and won't let Blocker go even after he thinks he just might be innocent. A lynch mob is brewing and stoking the fires there is the widow of the deceased, Olive Sturgess. It's a recipe for the tragedy that unfolds.
Kudos going out to Olive Sturgess for a great performance as the widow whose grief is the catalyst for the events unfolding." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"Here is another episode that involves one of the Cartwright boys being accused of a murder that he did not commit. This time the character is Hoss when he is arrest outside of a small town that recently had a bank robbery that involved the killing of Ed Wilson, a respected town person.
One of the local drunks is duped into fingering Hoss for the killing. And this sets off the townsfolk wanting a lynching instead of waiting for a trial.
The local sheriff, played by Denver Pyle, is not the most popular guy in town until the townsfolk believe he has captured Ed's murderer. The sheriff likes his new fame and refuses to send out a telegram that would prove Hoss's innocents. But soon he realizes that he can no longer control his town as they demand a lynching with or without any evidence.
This is again a very predictable and repeated episode. This is played out again and again during the entire series of 'Bonanza'. Without needing a spoiler we all know that the last five minutes will produce some action that could possibly save Hoss from hanging. Just way too predictable." Written by kfo9494 on IMDb.com

Incredible how much trouble the Cartwrights get into in one hour.
@dennishardy5024

I beg to differ with you. The Cartwrights didn't get into trouble nor look for trouble nor ever try to make trouble. It's because alot of the towns people were greedy, desperate , and willing to kill and rob. The Cartwrights were hardworking, honest, taxpaying law abiding men. So let's keep the story straight. Another of times it was a case of being at the right place but the wrong time. Cartwrights helped people. They didn't hurt people unless they were provoked.

Bonanza often had thought provoking things in their series. I loved stories since a little boy and no matter what the story, there is some little nugget that we may take away from it.
I just noticed something I hadn't ever noticed before. A hithching rail the Sheiff paused in front of had cribbing on it, just like you'd expect wood to display where bored horses spend any time. Thumbs up to SOMEBODY on that set. A touch of realism where it's seldom seen.

Hoss also moves his cylinder over to a chambered round when the sheriff showed up, the first chamber is usually kept empty on a single action revolver due to a tendency to misfire. A lot of people might not notice these things, but the ones who do sure appreciate it.
@leliad7602

A lot of realism is missing in these shows. The backdrop in the scene with Hoss and the sheriff is the same one that shown over and over again and what is supposed to be totally different locations. The triangle shaped mountain Peak is very recognizable. And then multiple shows throughout the seasons they use the same Virginia City street scene over and over again- the one with the Chinese man walking into the street with a basket of laundry! And they used a scene with Joe racing down the road on his Pinto and turning the same corner every time. There are numerous scenes like this that are reused in different episodes-like they think we don’t notice.
Sadly, this is an example of art imitating reality. This is what happens when people listen to an idiot and let emotions take over logic. People don't care who done the deed, they only care that SOMEONE is blamed and punished. They don't care about that part til it's too late.

Andrew Coble, that's why this is one of my favorite episodes with Dan Blocker at the center of it, even though he is mainly in a jail cell. It is accurate on how people react to certain situations. Lynchings did happen, and this episode, to me, depicted the buildup and the intent in a believable way. The music is also very good in here, I think. Especially in the scene where Hoss is wrongly ID'd as the killer.

The Shierf lost his way when he didn't send the telegraph to find out the truth. The town wimp knew he was wrong but he saw his chance to win the hearts 💕 💞 of the town folks so he sold his soul for the moment. The grieving Widow lost her mind and wanted anybody to pay the price in which her father did by her hands.
