@@purpleflametarot39 This actor who played "Josh" is not Dan's son. In this movie Dan's real son plays the newspaper journalist if my memory serves me correctly. If I recall correctly he was and looked too old to pass for a 36 year old man's son. Like Dan, the son is bald on top. The actor Hoss, wore a toupe during the show.

According to the "Bonanza" story-line, the character of Ben Cartwright's 2nd wife, "Inger"; was Swedish. The role was masterfully played by the American stage/movie actress Inga Swenson (Born on 12/29/32 in Omaha, Neb.), who also played Helen Keller's mother, "Kate"; in the 1962 Oscar winning movie:"The Miracle Worker", starring: Anne Bancroft (Best Actress) and Patty Duke (Best Supporting Actress). Miss Swenson is likely best known and remembered for her role as the Governor's sharp-tongued and quick-witted German housekeeper "Gretchen Wilhemina Kraus"; on the '80's' sit-com "Benson" (A spin-off of the '70's cult classic sit-com "Soap", on which she played the role of "Ingrid Swenson"!), As the absolute "bane of existence" to "Benson" (Robert Guillaume), time and again; "Miss Kraus" proved herself to be a formidable adversary as she constantly exchanged barbs and insults with everyone! In the "Bonanza" story-line, Ben Cartwright's 2nd eldest son,"Hoss"; was actually named after his Swedish grandfather "Eric" ("Inger's" father.), who evidently was something of a "hoss", himself. The nickname "Hoss" is an 'Americanization' of a Swedish word which, according to Hoss' mother Inger, and his Uncle Gunnar; is a "term of endearment" back in the 'old country'. In a 'flashback' episode, baby "Eric's" mother "Inger" is quoted as saying: "In the mountain country, that (Hoss) is the name for a 'big and friendly' man!" Thus, in order to placate young Adam Cartwright; "Ben" and "Inger" both agree to try out the nickname "Hoss" on their new-born son "Eric" just to:"...see which one sticks!" It wasn't until the 1988 TV movie: "Bonanza: the Next Generation" was aired, that it was revealed that "Hoss" had drowned while, in typical "Cartwright" fashion; heroically attempting to rescue a hapless damsel in distress! Alas, poor "Hoss" never knew that his fiancee' would give birth their illegitimate child, Josh Cartwright. Dan Blocker's real life son, Dirk Blocker; was considered too old to play the scion of Hoss Cartwright and was thus relegated to playing the role of an unrelated newspaper reporter named "Walter Fenster". The TV show "Bonanza" was named the best "all-around" show of the '60's'! And, rightfully so! It was rated #1 for a total of 4.75 years, #2 for almost 3 years, and in the top 5 for another 1.5 years; out of the 11 seasons from 1960 to 1970. At a time when the other studios went out of their way to basically ignore the "social problems" of the day, "Bonanza" dealt with subjects such as: bigotry, racism, intolerance, anti-semitism, discrimination, inter-racial marriage, prejudice, slavery, and the U.S. Supreme Court's: "Dredd Scott vs. Sandford Decision" of 1872!!! As a matter of fact, many of the story-lines and themes of "Bonanza" were instrumental in the fundamental development of the original "Star Trek" TV series, which aired from 9/'66' - 6/'69'. "Star Trek" was initially pitched to the networks by Gene Roddenberry as a: "'Wagon Train' to the Stars!" A sort of TV "western" series, only set in outer space! Y'know, kinda' like "Bonanza" or "Gunsmoke", only 400 years into the future!" Only Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez's "Desilu Productions" was smart enough to take a chance on "Star Trek"! And, "the rest"; is history! I'm just sayin'.....!

You know, our family did not like this sequel/movie of Bonanza and what they did to the integrity of Hoss. I understand wanting to bring his son into the movie, but the story line they used for this went against all the morals of the Cartwright family. To have a son in this story line Hoss would have had to have a affair before marriage, which the Cartwright family would have NEVER done. They could hve said there was a small marriage with a preacher at his house. So many ways other then trying to get modern immorality in it. Big Sweet Hoss was way better then that.

Little Joe on Bonanza the character was born in 1844. I'm not sure he died but in 1898 he still wouldn't be that of 1898 would have only. Put. At the age of. 54. Now I will admit that 54 is no spring chicken but it's not ancient. But what can I say Michael Landon played a great character and he'll be remembered for that so. Rip. Little Joe Cartwright. Born in 1844. And. Rip. Michael Landon 1936. Till 1991 your gone. But. You will never be forgotten.

Supposedly he had a girlfriend that the family didn’t know about whom he saved from drowning but was drowned in the process . The woman found out later that she was pregnant and didn’t tell anyone who the babies father was. This story came about in one of the later movies ,his cause of death wasn’t revealed in the original series. In Bonanza his passing was mentioned in two episodes with a single sentence in each episode . They mentioned Adam’s departure in two episodes also ,once when they got a letter saying he was on a ship and once when a conman claimed to have been on the same ship as Adam. I guess the family had a out of sight ,out of mind policy.

Hoss was about to be married in the first episode of the 1972-73 season, but Dan Blocker died during the hiatus between seasons. I guess that they (the writers) had a "love child" for Hoss for "Bonanza: The Return" (hence the reason Hoss was going to get married in the old series, although never implied in the original series).

  • @glorygracek.1841

Or in the Hiatus in-between the seasons when he died, they could have skipped the storyline ahead a bit. They just wanted to drag the show in the mud intentionally. No way about it. Never would that have happened in this family, especially Hoss. Dan blocker would have never agreed to that. I've watched this movie and it was no where near the quality of the original. It was alright, but have never watched it again, nor have any inclination. Has more the feeling of that era when they were trying to chip in on what was more popular and just write a script with little thought as to the original storyline or values.

Sometimes the writers of these scripts are too busy to look and review the whole series as it progresses and are pushed to get it done so they miss a lot that the devoted fans of the show. If I was to back a production I would make sure that the writers would have watched all of the series, take notes as to what happens and names and dates. Too many times I have seen writers screw this up because they didn't do their homework. Also the characters would be required to do the same because they have to be in the character they are playing. Even if they were to bring back some of the original actors. They have been away from the character so long they have to be reintroduced.

Was wondering why they ever shut the Bonanza ranch house # 1 down? Couldn’t someone of repaired it? I had no ideas bonanza is after the Original Cartwright Family in the 1800’s!! That there really was a Ben Cartwright Family not fictitious made for TV!!

He died in real life while the original show was still on so maybe they used the age he died in the last season or two.

Little Joe died in the Spanish American War? Even Little Joe would have been pretty old by 1898.

HawklordLI If you go by how old they said when the series began than Little Joe would have been 59 years old in 1898.

Well, Hoss's gravestone says he was born in 1842, so Joe couldn't have been born until at least 1844, so they obviously messed with the timeline. I don't remember Joe's birthdate from the original series, but I know he was an adult before the Civil War began, which means he was born 1840 or before.

So, Ben outlived three wives and two sons, not to mention losing contact with his eldest (Adam) and never finding or getting to meet one of his grandchildren........ That is a really sad end to his life. You think the writers would have let him die a happy old man, but clearly they felt it was better to dump as much heartache and sorrow on Ben's shoulders before he passed on..... How depressing......

The next generation and regards to Hoss is that it was many years later and I liked this updated show movie the show was fantastic Bonazan was like many western shows similar plot but it new really like the real west it was about a hard working father and his sons who of course had children and that means what about today a new generation of Bonazan 21 century the Caterights 2017 it could be interesting this old House of the western rebooted like Dallas a new twist of the western?
