Dan Blocker was a Texas native. They say that everything is bigger in Texas, and that idiom certainly applies to Blocker's larger-than-life personality. He was one of the most beloved members of the cast on Bonanza, where he played Hoss Cartwright, son of Ben Cartwright.

Blocker got his start on television in 1957, guest-starring in an episode of The Restless Gun. That small role got him the chance to audition in front of producer David Dortort. In 1958, he landed his first major recurring role in Cimarron City as the character Tiny Budinger.
It was in 1959, however, Dortort cast Dan as Hoss Cartwright in Bonanza - a role that would become his most defining work. Unfortunately, it was also his final role, because in 1972, after undergoing a relatively routine procedure removing his gall bladder, Dan developed a block clot in his lung and suddenly died.
His loss made waves across Hollywood, and it was clear that Bonanza would never be the same. For the first time in TV history, however, his death was addressed to the audience. So in many ways, he made history. Viewers got a chance to mourn his loss just as his family and friends did.
The final season of Bonanza was surreal. It was blatantly obvious that Blocker was absent. Without Hoss, it didn't even feel like the same show. That's also precisely while it's 14th season was also its final one.
Even today, that season is the least requested one for syndicated reruns. The first episode was highly viewed and historic in the way that it was the one that announced Hoss' death, but the remainder of the season almost felt compulsory. Bonanza, without Dan Blocker, wasn't really even Bonanza.

Yes, true. But you have to remember Pernell Roberts as Adam Cartwright had left Bonanza in 1965. When 50 percent of the cast is gone a television show is bound to go down hill. Also I could not help but notice that the hint of lighthearted humor left the show. Hoss and the Leprechauns (Episode aired Dec 22, 1963) is arguably the most popular episode of Bonanza. The Flapjack Contest (Episode aired Jan 3, 1965) was another lighthearted episode. So with two our of four characters gone, the reduction of humor and many more changes I have no hesitation in saying Bonanza was just not the same television show anymore. Don Blocker himself said it would not pass 15 seasons.

I think all of the brothers made the show. Adam was the level headed, business minded brother, Hoss was the comedian and the morally correct brother who saw all people as equal and Joe was the young, wild buck of the family that brought a different point of view to the family but at the same time showing complete dedication to the family. It would be hard to choose a favorite. Hoss once said in an interview that he didnt forsee Bonanza lasting more than 15 years (this was during their 13th season). He died right before they were about to make their 14th season. They are all gone now, including Ben, so may they all rest in peace.

Hoss always, like a sweet teddy bear. Hoss's mother's story was so touching when Paw/Lorne Greene recalled his 2nd wife. When Hoss laughed his whole body shook with his laughter. Nobody could take Dan Blocker's place in my heart, so I quit watching the series that had been my favorite TV show. Kinda strange that Michael Landon/Little Joe & Pernell Roberts/Adam both died of pancreatic cancer. GOD BLESS them, rest well in the hereafter Cartwright family.

I never had a "favourite" character from 'Bonanza.' To me, they were like the four 'aces' in a pack of cards. Each one of them being at the top of the 'pack.' Being in the UK, we used to sit and watch 'Bonanza' on a Sunday evening, (Started in 1960) daring not to miss any of the episodes. To this day, in 2022, I still like to watch 'Bonanza', now on KZread. Brilliant, five star programme, with top of the 'pack' characters and actors. Loved Hoss but Adam was my favorite. Pernell Roberts was outstanding in the role. I think the producers would’ve done better to compromise with Roberts on some of the issues he had with the show. There were too many inconsistencies and they wouldn’t allow the sons to mature over many years. Great show still. I’ve enjoyed bingeing it recently.

Pernell was a weirdo. Every actress that worked with him have said so. I didn't like him. Never smiled. Always serious.

On May 13 1972 I was sitting in the second deck on left field side just past 3rd base at Busch Stadium in St Louis MO. I do not remember who the Cardinals were playing, nor who won. Someone with a radio said to no one in particular, "Dan Blocker died".

The narrator said that the gall bladder surgery that was performed on Dan Blocker was a common procedure. It may have been, but the surgeries of today which uses very small incisions (normally 3-4 depending on the situation) and this arthroscopic procedures are a picnic in the park compared to the very major procedure that Blocker had. My father had his gall bladder removed in 1970, and although I was a typical teenager, I remember very well how sick my dad was and the scar on his right side extended from just below his waist to his rib cage. It was a horrible scar, and the recovery period was long and hard. Dan Blocker had a very serious illness and the surgery was worlds apart from today’s. Pulmonary thrombosis were common and I know from personal experience how quickly one can hit. I’ll always miss the gentle giant of Hoss Cartwright and Bonanza died on that May Day that he died.

Bonanza was a classic. I too watched the series. Many years ago I was in Norfolk, Va for some reason and by chance I saw Dan Blocker from a distance as he exited the Golden Triangle Hotel where he was staying. Wow what a big man. He seemed to stand head and shoulders above the people around him. It was a treat to see him in person especially since this was not planned. My grandparents last name was also Cartwright. My grandad had a sense of humor too. He wanted me to make them a sign to put in their yard that read ¨Cartwright´s Ponderosa¨ I did and it stayed there til my grandad died and my grandma moved. I have a photo of that sign with our young daughter standing beside it in an album here. She was about 2 years old at the time. There is a lot of love and memories in that photo for our daughter and the tv show as I´m reminded after watching this video about Bonanza and Dan Blocker.
