Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 22 April 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
The townsfolk of Virginia City find their loyalties divided right down the middle during the raging feud between the Mahans and the Clarkes. It is up to Ben Cartwright to negotiate a cease-fire, and also to decide which family will get custody of twin grandchildren. Helping Ben weather this crisis is the town's new minister (Robert Brown). Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"I caught this today on TV Land (possibly the same day as the first reviewer), & it was quite a gripping episode. When the story brought up the twins, I wondered if they were heading toward a certain Biblical story, which they did. But there's a real surprise waiting for you even after the apparent end of the story, so stay tuned all the way to the end.
This episode relies heavily on Biblical references at key points - including the preaching of the Sermon on the Mount, which provides the basis for both the title, and setting up Ben Cartwright's resolution to the custody battle between the feuding families.
This is the type of show that was seen 40 to 45 years ago, but rarely is any more. And TV is poorer for it." Written by news77 on IMDb.com
"When I do reviews for individual television episodes it's rare that I find someone before me, rarer still to find two people ahead of me in their assessments. This particular episode of Bonanza, Blessed Are They apparently is well remembered by people who viewed it. It is definitely one of the more unusual episodes the series ever had.
A new minister in the person of Robert Brown arrives in Virginia City and right into the middle of a controversy with the whole town buzzing. Two small children, Rory O'Brien and Tracy Stratford are the subject of a custody battle between dueling grandparents, the parents having both died. It was apparently a runaway marriage that didn't please either set of parents. Now they battle over the grandchildren.
Reverend Brown moves in mysterious ways to bring about this settlement, even involving Lorne Greene as a kind of unofficial arbiter. What Greene does in this religious type episode is use the Bible for guidance.
I can't say too much more about Blessed Are They except that the ending will come out of nowhere and that if this were a true story, Virginia City would be the American version of Fatima.
This one will stay with you forever once viewed." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Television shows operated under different attitudes in those days. Things remained the same. Week in, week out. If "Bonanza" were made today, the brothers would have wives, children and multi layered storylines lasting seasons. Back then, television was episodic in nature. A new story every week that was separate from the previous adventure and the following one next week. Having a cast of four (and later on) three main characters allowed the writers the freedom not to map out long term story arcs which they would have to have done if the cast were larger. Also television seasons were much longer (30 plus episodes) in those days. I am truly amazed at how shows back then kept up that schedule. It must have been gruelling.....

This was produced at the time when Christianity still stood for the core values in this country. The basic belief in God and the words of the bible still meant more than any other form of right and wrong. The main portion of the township was portrayed attending church every Sunday because for many decades that's what the general population of this country did do. Those of us who grew up attending church on Sundays with our families were certainly the better for it. It touched our hearts and enriched our spirituality to one extent or another. But no matter to what degree it was a positive influence that has been with us all of our lives.

This episode represents putting into practice The Sermon on the Mount. That Sermon always struck me as being the essence of Christian Belief. But I note in this essence the compatibility of this practice with all other true religions. Religion is not just quoting scripture but practicing virtue- or being as good a human being as is possible. So from religion we extend into spirituality. And in the Spirit I truly think all good people reside.

I have asked myself, past, present and, most likely, will ask myself in the future, where were those wonderful people during WW II when millions upon millions of men, women and children (and the unborn) lost their right to pursue happiness, their liberty, and their innocent lives ? "They, too, are guilty who stood by and watched." It was Edmund Burke who said: " THE ONLY THING NECESSARY FOR EVIL TO FLOURISH IS FOR GOOD PEOPLE ("MEN") TO DO NOTHING."

We have no choice but to restore or make great our nation again. And fast! For we were given an incredible document that declared our rights from the Devine, from God head. How can anyone not see that they must cherish ad gird themselves in the Bill of Rights and Constitution? Anyone coming here and fortunate enough to become a citizen would understand the writ of protection this affords them; and not let it go cheaply. The alternative is great loss. As the USA goes, so goes the dream of freedom, civil & spiritual right of choice, rugged individualism, free speech, rights to self defend, and so much more. If we stupidly-divided children can not see the importance of this and thus unify in order to fight off this sad corruption and approaching centralized dominance, then what chance do other parts of the planet have to stay safe from the boot on the throat of humanity?!

This type of sectarianism could never be made today, particularly in a TV series. How times have changed. So lovely and appropriate to end in a phenomenal supernatural event. Based on Christian scripture which has been duly noted. The actor playing the angel was excellent. I don't remember this one, but my family always watched Bonanza episodes together. The Cartwrights had their flaws but were themselves exemplary human beings, impossibly so in fact. Nowadays, perhaps correctly, who's to say, this teleplay would be condemned as racist. (the Asian cook, the absence of black people) The Protestant (Methodist) hymn singing brought back memories of a more innocent time. The next year brought JFK murder and the beginnings of the more critical and cynical attitudes of the turbulent 60's. It's kind of a capsule popular culture prehistory of these times. Not to assume that this was something original, history is cyclical. Miss all these great actors. Supporting cast was exceptional. Lorne Greene esp. good in this. Great script. Amazing what they could do on a sound stage.

The Bible said GOD sends angels unaware to us. I have even heard one talk to me. My family and I almost died in a house fire, and GOD sent an angel to call me by my nickname so that I would wake up-and stop the fire. We often are in their presence. GOD gave each one of us one when we were conceived and the stay with us until we die. That same angel will be by our graves when Jesus comes to escort us to heaven

My regret, was that he passed when I was a very young child and I didn't get to know him. Be very careful and aware, those we entertain may be angels. Jesus the Christ said hinder not the children to come unto me, and these folks entertained and angel and didn't hinder the children. All is love and these folks expressed love, in a particular fashion. Another fine display of writing and the craft of acting out a love story, of loss and redemption.
