Humiliated by a professional gunslinger in front of a bar crowd that included his girlfriend, timid Johnny Chapman asks Little Joe to teach him how to handle a gun. But, Johnny changes as he gains skill and confidence and Joe soon doesn't recognize his friend in the hard, ruthless man he's become. Written by shepherd1138 on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"Right around the same time as this Bonanza episode was aired, there was one of those B westerns with a lot of old timers in the cast called The Bounty Killer. Dan Duryea starred in that and his character is similar to Guy Stockwell's in this story.
After being humiliated by a gunfighter in front of his girlfriend Stockwell appeals to his friend Joe Cartwright to teach him a fast draw. Michael Landon teaches him all too well as Stockwell decides to go into the bounty hunting business to gain respect.
Sadly Stockwell does not know the difference between respect and fear. Will he learn it?
The episode closely parallels The Bounty Killer a real gem of a B western. I recommend both highly." Written by bkoganbing on IDMb.com
"In this particular episode, one of those I've seen many times over, Guy Stockwell does a consummate acting job in this character study: he is both a straight guy and an arrogant outlaw-type man. He starts off as a shy young man who is humiliated in the saloon one day by an arrogant outlaw because he, Stockwell, cannot use a gun, which, in turn, is why Little Joe teaches him the skill of drawing and shooting but, the next thing you know, after he learns well the skill, he becomes himself a bounty hunter who is very cold. He becomes mean and ugly even toward his girl and in one sense becomes practically inhuman. This episode has a bitter-sweet ending, but it is one of those Bonanza episodes which is very introspective and, again, an excellent character study" Written by daviddaphnered on IMDb.com

I love the symbolism at 38:52 when Johnny rides into town and gets off his horse, removes his hat, dusts himself off, removes the strap securing his gun to the holster, lifts his gun a little and drops it back into the holster and then swaggers into the saloon like a bad ass cowboy. That is exactly what Mooney did at 0:23. In fact, Johnny was dressed almost exactly the same. Excellent job showing Johnny became the same type of man that Mooney was.

If I'm not mistaken he wasn't doing anything illegal,he was just doing what the sheriff wouldn't or couldn't do. Go after and catch killers. It's amazing how in these westerns bank robbers are looked up to and admired but bounty hunters are treated like scum of the earth. I really liked the ending because Olive was very faithful to Johnny. Of course she wanted to get away from him when he turned into a killer, but at the end when he realized that he was a killer and that he wasn't as fast as Joe, then he changed back to the way that he was before. Olive was faithful to him because she could see that he changed back to the way that he was before so she took him back and they left together. That's the way that a woman should be.

  • @RayRay002

The way a woman should be? That was no woman. She was a Whore, they toned it down in the series because they would lose viewing audience and probably even fined by the FCC and taken off the air... He became a killer because of a whore, which made him a brain dead idiot, and when he saw he could get rich quick by killing for money it took it... A woman can be loyal but if the wrong thing happens and she isn't married she def. should know when to walk away. A guy like that would be damaged for the rest of his life, probably been a wife beater even...

I asked this question once before : Why were bounty hunters so despised ? After all, they caught the worst kind of criminals whom the law was not able to catch. Moreover, if they wanted the wanted ones to brought in alive, all that needed to be done was to have the wanted posters read - ... wanted alive ! It would have been as simple as that. In fact, there would have been fewer words on the poster.

@@Eturoel for a long time I didn’t understand either. I suppose it’s a matter of killing for money. Even though they are wanted men, there’s a certain cold bloodedness that comes with repeatedly killing men for a reward. At the end of the day it’s still a life that’s taken. So to make your living doing that….I can see why it wasn’t looked upon favorably Although I do realize that even in other shows when bounty hunters tried bring in people alive they regard necessarily regarded favorably either…

I see what you mean. I don't think it was fair to label him as a killer or compare him to a criminal. No one seems to consider the innocent lives that were SAVED as a result of a Bounty Hunter bringing down a wanted criminal. The last scene though, where he wanted to kill Little Joe, shows he had become hardened, ready to kill over any conflict. But you're right, asking for criminals alive would have eliminated unnecessary killing.

When little Joe said this thing isn’t any good for anything but cracking walnuts means the writers didn’t know anything about gun safety you always treat a gun like it’s loaded whether it is or not. As the old saying goes the most dangerous gun is an empty gun. On one other episode they had Adam scratching the side of his head with his pistol which sends a bad lesson to people that don’t know anything about guns but it just wasn’t Bonanza but a lot of westerns that were irresponsible about guns.

Those people give that bounty hunter money and tell him what a great guy he is one day, and the next they act like he's dirt. They also act like the guy who was harassing the bounty hunter to be was a saint or angel. In San Antonio, Texas, they have a saying: "If you're looking for trouble, you're going to find it." The sheriff is one of the biggest hypocrites of them all because he knew there would be killing when he accepted the badge.

The man named Johnny was lucky to have a woman who loved him and a friend like Little Joe. True that Little Joe taught the man Johnny how to shoot a gun but Little Joe would not have wanted his friend Johnny to become a bounty hunter!!! Still I do not think that Johnny was bad he just got caught up in the fact the every time he pulled the trigger rightly or wrongly more money was in his pocket! Easy money!!!
