"A magic that depended on its intimacy, of course; on the acoustics; but, above all, on the reciprocity. Between each song, Justin took a few minutes to talk to us, telling us how happy they were to be there, on that particular night, with such a small crowd..."

12 years now but seeing this video during this time has made me realize how much having music and friends in an event like this makes it much more memorable. How the world has changed drastically, has been wanting me to rewind time and go back. Hope everyone is well and sanitized. :)

something about this is so ethereal. the yellow light. the naturally grainy camera. the way we never see justin’s face, as though hes anonymous. the different reactions of the people - the women at the beginning looking completely in awe, the one guy who looks like hes going to burst into tears, the daniel radcliffe lookin guy just absolutely rocking, its all really beautiful and warm. i want my life to feel like this video. and to think this was recorded when i was 7 years old. RIGHT before my life got hard and complicated. for some reason i believe if id been in that room, everything would have been different. as though i would have been somehow blessed, my journey made easier and gentler by experiencing that energy. if i could go back in time, id put my 7 year old self in that room. i think that would fix everything before it even needed to be fixed.

i think it’s the way they’re each taking what they need from the song. whether it’s the tones of contemplation, yearning, and desperation, or the passion, anger, frustration, freedom of letting go... you can see the different emotion in everyone there. it affects them all differently. some are heartbroken, some are falling in love, some are deeply in love, maybe some are falling out of love. but they’re all feeling something. its amazing.

Your comment, Jenna, was a delight to read. Your takeaway from the video and the way you've encapsulated it in words made this video so much more special for me. Love is both; the pain that it inflicts (like placing your hand near a candle; allowing the ache to make lodgement in you), and the cure to the ache that it ensues ( like a moth dancing to its death while tracing ts path near the flame of a candle; the cure being the moth submitting itself to the gentle ache - thinking of it as its salvation). I think people reacted differently to this placidly horrifying song because of their nearness to the candle (no wonder the room in this video is illuminated by dimly lit candles). You know, the ones near submit to the ache; sway in tandem and are in awe of the tender ache called love (just like the lady in this video). Move a little far, and it feels the candle would rip you apart, partially because you aren't fully aware of what love is capable of unfurling into, and partially because the only thing we fear more than falling is: falling in love, and losing ourselves. Explains why the guy looked so awfully shaken. And then, there are others who look at this candle from a distance; aware of all the candle is capable of doing, and they sing their sorrow and wisdom away, as if they're trying to warn the blissful fool (like Vernon, and the guy humming the chorus). And yet, love in all its horrifying beauty, is worth it, no? Blessed be the mystery of love, as Sufjan puts it. :')

@@nehamoolchandani2810 oh wow, thank you so much. your words are incredible. it’s like this video was directed, with the audience as actors, told how to react to the music to exhibit this beautiful symbolism of love. joy vs pain, warmth vs coldness, light vs darkness. unbelievable that this just came together perfectly by accident. being in the light just a little bit, is being in love just a little bit. the scariest feeling. because you can see all these things to be afraid of or to hope for, but you cant see them well enough to truly understand, or know what exactly it all is. half in, half out. in the darkness theres nothing, and in the full light, there is clarity. your last paragraph, about the audience wishing to warn Justin really struck me. the man straight ahead of Justin, looking down with his arms crossed, makes me feel like he is feeling every bit of hurt that weaves through the sweet-sounding lyrics in this song, while the guy rocking out, is feeling all the emphatic joy. but we know that Skinny Love (the experience of “skinny love” as well, to be in love and to be loved by the one you love, but neither of you know how the other feels) is about both. intertwined. those two men are at opposite ends of the spectrum. absolutely beautiful. amazing. thank you for sharing in my appreciation of this video. warms my heart. all my love. thank you

By far the best live performance I've seen on KZread. Bon Iver, the audience, the environment, the filming. No phones no nonsense. Just eyes and ears of good spirited souls. What I would've done to have been there...damn. Every hair on my body stood up when they sang that powerful bridge. And the audience member on the left, that's what music is all about! He barely looked up to watch. Fully into the music. Immediately stood up at the end. Kudos Justin, Sean, and Michael. Kudos.

LYRICS Come on skinny love just last the year Pour a little salt we were never here My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer I tell my love to wreck it all Cut out all the ropes and let me fall My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Right in the moment this order's tall I told you to be patient I told you to be fine I told you to be balanced I told you to be kind In the morning I'll be with you But it will be a different kind 'Cause I'll be holding all the tickets And you'll be owning all the fines Come on skinny love what happened here Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Sullen load is full, so slow on the split I told you to be patient I told you to be fine I told you to be balanced I told you to be kind Now all your love is wasted? Then who the hell was I? Now I'm breaking at the bridges And at the end of all your lines Who will love you? Who will fight? Who will fall far behind? Come on skinny love My, my, my, my, my, my, my, m

This reminds me of my first year of university so much. I was, coincidentally, living in Paris in fall 2009, and this song and album were everywhere. This performance I probably watched dozens of times back then in my Parisian dorm, and just came across it again in 2020. I can't believe how much it takes me back to those times and how I felt then --- so happy, excited, nervous, but most of all free from where I came from and a new chapter I was starting in life. Today, I still wish I felt like that more often, but even when I don't, I'm glad I once did so I can try to find it again.

Daniel Moore that’s why I bring my guitar just about anywhere, and I will only play it if whoever the audience is sings while I play. I’ve made thousands of friends this way, and people remember it, because of the fact that they are singing together and being part of the show.

I remember watching this video in high school & being shook by it every time. Must’ve been 10 years or so since I last watch’d it. Totally had me in tears. What is it with this song & this era of music that just forever cuts like a knife at the soul? I can’t pin-point & frankly couldn’t care less to. It’s just so amazing what music can do in a small confined space with people. The eruption in this lil live version is something I will infinitely refer to when I say ‘that is life’.

I'm with people who say that they hate when music goes mainstream. When you find a song, and it's not mainstream, it's like your own little oasis out in desert. You don't want others to find it, or else it'll all be destroyed, and it won't be the same to you, as it once was. Call me a "hipster" all you want. But it's true, and that's what this song(along with many others) is to me.

I'll always hold this song close to my heart although it is bitter sweet. It was introduced by someone I dated while knowing our time would come to an end. She taught and showed me that love was a real thing and I was deserving of it, she made me feel wanted. Part of me thought she would not have to leave once our planned time was up, but she did and this song took on a greater meaning for me afterwards, she even introduced me to this channel. All I know is I'll never forget the love you showed me, you caught me at a terrible point in my life, and without you, I would probably not be alive to this day. Thank you B.
