Bon Appetit! The Life and Times of Julia Child

Award-winning food writer Sharon Hudgins presents the life and times of Julia Child, who, at nearly 60 years of age, gained fame as "America's French Chef." By the time I was six years old in 1967 I could impersonate Julia Child perfectly much to the dismay of my parents. I would run around our Brooklyn apartment saying, “Welcome to the French Chef, I’m Julia Child.” I absolutely adored and was fascinated by her cooking. While most children were asking for Mac & Cheese... l was asking my Mother for Boeuf Bourguignon with a French accent nevertheless. Thank you, I sincerely enjoyed your video.

This was a WONDERFUL lecture - it never, ever got even close to dull, so it passes the acid test for public speaking with flying colours! Bravo Sharon Hudgins. Granted, you had a fascinating subject in the magical, intolerably charismatic & loveable Julia Child. But someone of lesser talent than you could never have created such a great presentation, that - while inevitably only touching the surface of such a complex personality - still did justice to her glory. Thank you, I was thoroughly entertained while learning a great deal I didn't know, about a great lady. The fact that her immense, international success came in middle age is inspiring to many of us who are no longer in the first flush of youth!

7-29-2022 I learned how to cook from Julia Child many years back and got pretty good at it (he says immodestly). She was inspirational and such a compelling teacher her influence has lasted with me for more than half a century. She’s a much beloved personality to my family to this very day. Her clarity and directness opened domestic American cooks to being adventuresome trying new ways of cooking. As a nation we are indebted to her for moving us from our mother’s era of Betty Crocker cooking to cooking tasty, memorable and luscious foods. Over many years I taught my 3 sons to cook under Julia Child’s guidance and mindfulness. They’re appreciative and their wives are thankful to Julia too.

I'm a huge fan of Julia Child, but the picture shown at 9:30 is a picture of Julia & Avis DeVoto (on the left). Avis was married to historian Bernard DeVoto who lived in Cambridge. In 1953 he published an article about kitchen knives in his Harper's column. Julia read the article & loved it so much she sent him a few knives. Avis responded to the letter and a correspondence began between Julia & Avis, with Avis eventually working for Knopf publishing & was instrumental in getting the contract for Julia's cookbook. The photo was taken in 1956, Bernard had recently passed away & the Childs paid for Avis to visit them in Europe. She & Julia went to the Cordon Bleu to help Chef Bugnard (her favorite chef) prepare for his class and to work on the cookbook. Avis was thrilled to be part of it all. Please read the book, "As Always, Julia," with has all the letter sent back and forth for 8 years, while the Childs went from Paris to Marseille to Plittersdorf to DC to Oslo & finally retiring in Cambridge (Avis helped them find the home on Irving Street). You can see for yourself all the problems she faced in getting the manuscript published and her life in Europe & experience with Cordon Bleu. Excellent reading!

She was asked to help out with a serious problem they were having with the bombs that were on the bottom of the sea. The sharks were curious and all of a sudden . . . BOOM!!!!! She actually developed a recipe to deter fish and sharks away from the explosives. It worked so well that they added it to the life jacket's of the sailors. She actually liked to call it her very first recipe. An amazing woman RIP.

I know she became successful later on in life but I’m 28 and a home maker and not a very successful one so I just hope I can have her kind of blessings.

A lovely presentation, it wasn't her metabolism it was the proper food she ate all her life that kept thin well into old age, it's a crime how fats have been vilified by the packaged food companies, eat plenty of butter and cream and avoid sugars and grains and you'll be thin AND healthy.

Julia at a lot of grains and grain products, breads in particular. She also ate a fair bit of sugar, because she liked cakes and pastries; she just ate them in moderation. You're right about butter not being unhealthy, though, and she ate a lot of it. It's margarine that's bad for you.

Since I started back cooking, and following Julia's techniques, and use whole foods, I have felt soooo much better. From my mood, to being regular. I've always loved to cook, but Julia has helped revive my love for it.

What a great woman I'm sure her life would have been very different if she had children as it would of slowed her down with different commitments
