BOLTR: Made in USA, DeWalt 20V MAX Hammer Drill. Mechanical Part A.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Bored of lame tool reviews? This is not your typical corpo shill tool review. I'll have a look at the guts of this DeWalt Li-Ion hammer drill and see if the quality matches the hype. Electrical and testing Part B next Sunday!
Thanks to all the guys and gals that pitch in a few bucks to make these vids happen. / ave

Regarding your question as to why they switched the yellow casing material from "PA6 G33" (Nylon 6 embedded with 30% short glass fibers) to "PC/PBT" (Polycarbonate with Polybutylene terephthalate): You're right that the glass fibers improve the wear and impact resistance. However, at cold temperatures the nylon+gf is susceptible to cracking when it's impacted. It won't be a ductile fracture (think about how with some plastics turn white when you bend them, and then you have to bend it back and forth a bunch of times to actually snap it). At cold temps you'll have a brittle fracture that propagates from where the glass fibers meet the nylon. The PC/PBT doesn't have this issue, which is great for anyone who likes to throw their power tools on the concrete during the winter. However, this material change comes with a cost: strength and stiffness. That might impact the life of the gears and motor, which depend on having a super rigid casing to keep them in place. But you gotta fit that bathtub curve somehow, right?

I gotta admit I am a bit of a dewalt fanboy, only because I have used damn near every angle grinder and the dewalt still wins it for me. thick power cord, o-rings on the disk nuts (never once needed a spanner wrench to remove it) its only a 4.5" but the darn thing can run at 13.0 amp,11,000 RPM. And my wrist HP detector can confirm it will just destroy a metabo 10amp. Not to mention it has tool free guard adjustment. I have killed may grinders being a welder/fabricator but I have had my trusty dewalt for 2 years now and only needed to replace the brushes and cord (cord because I decided to grind a few chunks out of the original).. Granted this is a higher quality grinder that you wont find at lowes or home depot.

To get the chuck off once you get the center screw out I always use a 3/8" impact with a hex "allen" socket on it. Chuck the hex part of the socket in the drill chuck and clamp it down. Then the impact will almost always just pop the chuck loose easy. Fastest way to change a chuck I've found

I think the mold can be designed such that it will first injection mold the main body then, mechanically slide out the overmold portion and then finally inject the overmold material around the body. There are some fairly sophisticated molds in use today. In the '90's we had a three color mold for the keys on the HP calculators!

I have the latest high end Makita brushless drill/driver and its a beast of a thing. It comes with a huge handle thats like 350mm long. When I first used it I thought wow Im not going to need that handle, its a battery drill so I took it off. Then I tried to drill some steel on low gear and when the drill grabbed it seriously nearly broke my wrist and the whole drill ripped out of my hand, The Makita has more grunt than my corded drill. Even if they cut corners on materials, theres no doubt the performance of modern(good) battery tools are way better than they were, even 5 years ago. There are new Impact wrenches that do over 1000nm, thats just phenomenal for a 18v tool.

Very not often I comment on KZread and 1st time I feel the need to take the time. Not to comment the subject of the video, but rather THE PERSON in the video. Just want to say that you are just SIMPLY COMPLETELY INCREDIBLE!!!! Today I started to take apart my dewalt drills to repair them, started watching few videos about it, and then came yours....And after went to see others your have made. Just Wow, you have great knowledge, but not only that, you have this multi perspectives approach/ comes and goes from simple to complex informations, makes it understandable and interesting and learning so easy and fun from beginning to the end👍🧡💚❤💙 Great humor and great natural rythm to share, great fun vibe. None of those you can buy at the hardware store, a great gift you have I think. Just whish some of my teachers would had been more like you when I was young !! I Watches/listened 7-8 of your videos having a great time and keeping learning about many things while fixing the drill. GREAT GREAT JOB 👍👍👍 Sure I'm not the only who also think's that!!!😉😊 (apologies for the grammatical mistakes, English is not my first language)

Have the 1/2 inch 20 volt dewalt myself and put against my rotary hammer there is no question which is better. If u are putting a few small holes in block the 1/2 works but if like me u need 150 3/8 " holes in poured concrete for railings, buy, rent, or eBay a rotary hammer drill. Actually think the dewalt burns bits quicker, have no understanding why, but had brother help on project and had 2 make him stop using the hammer drill after destroying 2 bits. I brought out the rotary hammer and did 10xs the work with exact same type bit and still had life left in it.

Fun fact for you. PBT is the plastic of choice of PC keyboard nerds, I know my self being one and waiting for the stuff to arrive. Dyes real well with synthetic dyes for what ever that is worth.

Made the mistake myself of confusing a hammer drill with a rotary hammer. DeWalt corded hammer drill would chew through bits like nothing. Two, maybe three holes out of a 3/16" bit before the end looked like the flared tip of my...well, you know. Switched to a Milwaukee rotary hammer and blasted through 75ish holes on one bit. DeWalt is in the garbage now. My dad always said you need the proper tool for the job. Still learning the old man was right. Do love my 12v DeWalt drills and impact driver, though the battery life sucks.

Thumbs up on the BOLTR. 2X thumbs up on the lumber jack. That must be one hell of a ride when that tree top heads earthward. 3X thumbs up for the cameraman/woman that was filming that guy. In those daze that camera was a hefty piece of gear.... No slouch was he/she in capturing that footage.

I have got a decent amount of experience with brushless vs brushed motors thanks to my rc car/truck hobby. I will say this, the brushless setups do need a more expensive speed controller, but they can put out wayy more power (most spin faster than 30000 rpm ). They usually run much cooler too and the motors outlast the brushed counter parts more than 10 times over especially if you drive in lots of mud, sand and water. most brushless motors (sensor-less ones) do not run low rpms as smooth as the brushed motors. for them to run smoothly at low rpms you need magnetic sensors to tell the esc(electronic speed controller) where the rotor is so that it can send the correct signal to the correct winding(these are called sensor motors) . This would would be the type used in a drill and would drive up cost a bit . A normal brushed drill has a pwm controller which is the same kind of circuit used in a brushless system,it is true that the brushless system is a good deal more complex, but for the pwm circuit you still need a decent amount of active electronics already, so in terms of being able to handle moisture they should actually be as good as each other (if neither was water proofed)

The cam lobes on my lawn mower are nylon. Nylon's pretty strong(er than I thought it was). The pushrods the cam lobes push on are steel and although I used the mower for the better part of a decade, there was no sign of wear on the nylon! So as long as I still had the patient under anesthesia, I used epoxy and aluminum to make a new pair of lobes on the back side of the original ones. That way, when she woke up, she'd have a nice new pair of lobes. Turned the four-stroke into a two-stroke :-) [rubbing hands together in an evil fashion] Once that bit of mechanical magickery was put into the past, I converted the mower engine to run on steam/compressed air. It sounds like a steam engine for some reason. Not a lot of hp but a goodly amount of tq so the valve train doesn't take a beating at all. The aluminum lobes I built with my own ten thumbs were over-skookumed because I heard later that you can just use epoxy for the whole thing, then sand/polish them into the right shape.

I have a cordless hammer drill that does fine going into concrete and masonry. It’s not even a big hammer drill, just a Dewalt brushless DCD795, haven’t had to pull out my big old corded Matika in years now. Don’t need a rotary hammer drill unless you doing some serious drilling with large bits, chipping, or need to get through hard natural stones like granite.

If ya chuck the largest Allen wrench what'll fit, you have something to strike (fast like, to jar it loose) thus dislodging the stuck chuck.

I've used a brushed Makita drill and impact driver set for years, and recently upgraded to a new brushless set. The new brushless impact driver is vastly more powerful than the old brushed one, it can break 1/4-20 bolts clean off if you are stupid. The old brushed driver got demoted to screwdriver bit duty. The drills are a little closer in performance, the brushed tends to get hot if you're drilling multiple holes, the brushless doesn't ever get hot but the anti-kickback is a bit sensitive. Also I find it funny that all these "contractor-grade" tools are only using 5-cell lithium ion battery packs, where Makita calls their 5-cells compact, and puts 10-cell packs in their regular tool packages.

How long do those clutches normally last? I do alot of small screws and use a cordless drill with the clutch set down low as an impact driver just is too powerful. But ive always sort of wondered how fast am i wearing the clutch out on the drill?
