I honestly don't get why people are still so enamoured with metal vapour lighting for this, ahem, application. The heat load is insane, and surely you can make up a more than adequate spectral profile with LEDs? Also, heat load will fuck your plants right up and heat load and power draw are things that will draw the crabs, which is not good...

My great grandfather was a miner born in Wales, who came to the USA as a miner, and was killed in a mine explosion. He was 42. I would imagine he would have paid anything for a lamp like this. Hats off to the miners, and God bless the inventors of safe mine equipment. A lot of money, yes, but the alternative down there is unthinkable.

Given the high cost of the flashlight and the lens's solvent resistance, I would say that it is likely the PC lens has been annealed. Annealing polycarbonate increases both its impact strength and solvent resistance but skyrockets the price. You heat up the part relatively slowly to 250-275 F (just below the GT temp) , let the temp equalize, and slowly cool it down over several hrs. Takes prolly somewhere between 6-10 hours or more. I worked in injection molding for a few years and the most "annealing" we ever did was closing a box full of parts while they were still hot lol

just a single 18650 cell? thats really cool. this is just like that orange light you sent me years ago. this was your best video in a while, mostly because mining is really cool. :D 6:05 thats the BMS circuit, it most likely just makes sure the cell doesnt go above 4.2v or bellow 3.6v. i dont think they have single use fuses on them, i think its all electronic if it shuts off power.

Those threaded metal inserts in the clear lens are actually probably "ultraset" inserts. Truly molded-in have to be set onto pins in the mold, and that would usually be done by hand (as is mold clearing and reset). That's way too fiddly and PITA (especially in gloves, since the mold is hot) and ends up expensive in labor time and how often the mold can be shot. Ultraset inserts get used a lot because they can be set in a cold part, long after molding. The insert gets set just into the molded-in hole (usually counterbored a bit, to located the insert; with the main part of the hole being smaller than the OD of the insert's knurling). Then a pin is inserted into the insert connected to a device that vibrates the living daylights out of it at ultrasonic frequencies. That vibration heats the insert up and melts the surrounding plastic, allowing the insert to be pressed down into the hole. Once the plastic cools, it's as tough as a molded-in would have been, without having to screw around with tiny inserts inside a hot mold cavity.

Great video! When you were talking about the tempered glass, I believe the word you were looking for was "grains". If I remember correctly from my materials class, tempered glass is similar to tempered metals in that they've disrupted the formation of the crystal structure in the part. So you end up with small clusters of crystals, or grains, intersecting each other at odd angles, and like you said, creating large stresses within the material, making it stronger at the expense of making it brittle.

Back when I worked at an injection molding factory, little brass threaded inserts similar to the ones in that lens were not molded with the part. They were put in using an ultrasonic welder. This was on parts like speaker grills for Motorola, and other similar parts. Every once in a while the machine would go haywire and emit this high pitched screeching noise that made you want to shoot your ears off.

Love how the lamp (Polaris, made by NTL) is actually measured using Lux vs common Lumens. Always dislike getting a measurement in Lumens as it is a bit of a idiot test, sure that light may be 1500 Lumens but how bright it is depends of what type of lamp it is (huge ceiling fixture vs handheld torch) while Lux is a measurement (basically) of how bright the light will actually appear when in use (bit more crap goes into it but that's the gist)

Those ICs are pretty cheap, and although normally in hobby applications people take perverse pride in cobbling together their own reinvention of the wheel, lithium batteries are fussy as fuck, and dangers of charging or discharging them wrong them include but are not limited to limiting battery life, fucking the battery permanently, fire, explosing and death. So yeah, why fuck around when a 50c part can do the job? Also, even big companies like Apple often fuck it up, so yeah. Why fuck around? But I repeat myself...

Regarding the "Made in Canada" stamp... I worked in a bicycle shop for a while in the past, and I remember having a discussion with the owner about the these "Made in [somewhere besides China]" labels. They don't always have the highest level of "truthiness". There are regulations controlling how products are labelled, but there are ways around them. The word "made" can be defined very loosely. For example, I could order a batch of 10, 000 widgets from Generic Mass Production Facility #1001 in sunny Shenzhen. When the widgets are delivered to my Canadian "production facility" (i.e., warehouse), I could then "manufacture" my finished product (i.e., apply company branding and repackage). Since the final stages of production occurred in Canada, I could proudly declare my overpriced junk to be "Made in Canada".

A Panasonic CGR18650EA to be exact based on the label it's clearly in focus around 5:42, I think that line had roughly 2500 mAh nominal capacity on the specification. And they handled up to 5A discharge well enough based on the 2 of them that I've used over the years. Wouldn't know what the actual datasheet specified for them, I just know they held up to that for a good while in my use (acceptable operating temperatures of the cells, so definitely not too much internal resistance)

Environmental Stress Cracking (ESC) One theory is that the liquid can diffuse into the polymer, causing swelling which increases the polymer’s chain mobility, this would be increased if the polymer surface is damaged or under stress. I accidentally destroyed an acrylic motorcycle wind-shield when I tried cleaning it with Isopropyl alcohol (propan-2-ol), it was OK till I got to the edges, then it crazed.

The cost comes with the testing and certification - it costs tens of thousands of pounds/dollars for which in the grand scheme of things is a low volume specialist product, and as ave said, there's a huge liability issue, a mine goes boom because of your lamp - that's one big law suit!

The tiny board on the battery is a little Battery Management System or BMS. It protects the cell from over- and undervoltage, overload and overtemperature, by shutting off the power via two MOSFETs (connected in a way that the internal body diodes are anti-serial). It automatically resets when the voltage/temperature is in the allowed range again.
