    Enjoyed that. To be fair, the Desert War is the theatre where you can get away with not having scenery to begin with. Stick some books under a beige sheet and your good to go.

    This is where I am going to be kicking off into the desert. This box set coupled with either the Africa Korp starting army ( Warlord Product Code 402612001), or the 8th Army Starter set ( Warlord Product Code 402611001). You would have damn near everything you will ever need to have an entire Platoon.

    This is a really good starter set. Very balanced and a great entry point. You can add a command box, a few special weapons teams, a tank and a transport and you’d have a very viable army without breaking the bank. Rubicon sells a 222 but it is not a gamers kit. Very detailed with loads of parts

I've been holding off getting into a new theatre but I have all the scenery already from my modern North Africa / Middle East Spectre Ops obsession last year (the adobe houses pretty much work from ancient to modern at a pinch, so WW2 fits right in!), and this scratches my early war itch which I've yet to scratch! 2 things that would make the mortar better would be; - they are a separate choice to the medium and heavy mortars for the Brits. Because they were integral with the platoons and there all through the war, the company and battalion assets of the larger mortars mean that they shouldn't take the same unit choose slot. - Range - indirect fire should be 9" to 24", not 12" to 24" (dare I even suggest 6" to 24". The explosive was fairly naff and the 2" mortar was used to deploy smoke, especially from the middle towards the end of the war, so in terms of effectiveness it's probably about right. If the 2 changes above were done then it would be a viable choice, especially having the light mortar as separate choice to the other mortars. 👍🏻

    @@ModellingforAdvantage thanks! Lots of small changes like that I think are needed, hopefully for a V.3 of the game, but I guess they'll get drowned if they ever were to ask for suggestions 🤣 Main 2 changes we are toying with are that LMGs and MMGs cause extra pinning (they are a pinning weapon primarily after all). Also that models armed with SLRs (like the Garand and Gewehr 43) and rapid firing squad weapons like the LMG (not SMG, pistols or ARs) count as having the tough fighter rule for any close combat hits that score a 6. This accounts for these weapon's higher rates of fire and/or magazine size giving an advantage over Bolt action or other armed infantry, but still not as good as the guys that get full Tough Fighter ability. This also helps to balance out, in addition to the extra pinning for LMGs) the gross over-pointing of LMGs. Keep the vids coming, great content 👍🏻👍🏻

    Actually you aren't right with MP40 it was standard infantry weapon (espetially for sqad leaders ) from start of war - mp38 was used and tested asi early as in atack on Poland. After fight against sovients in Urban combat - where soviets mass used ppsh41 they sometimes use Full assault squads with mp 40 , IT was standard.gun and over 1000 000 was made. As and smg IT was mostly for added volume od fire (learned from ww1) it helps enemy heads get Down when coverfiring when atacking. IT was used for vehicle crew as well but IT was common standard mass used infantry smg . And btw :D it is not a small gun IT is similar size as ak47s with folding Stock (that Stock is basicly a copy of MP40 Stock) i did handle a replica and IT is weirdly long for 9mm and with Stock IT is clumsy as IT is common to see most soldiers just used it without stock

    While I agree the newer sprues are easier, I must say I prefer the more tricky option of seperate weapons as that gives us easier variation of poses and gear.. Otherwise it seems like a very good set for the money.

    This is great! The one minor nitpick I have with this set is that it doesn't include any of the new Italian plastics. That's problematic as most of the DAK (to the surprise of many) were made up of Italians. Even the allied Anglo-American forces--when fighting Italians--didn't seem to know they were fighting Italians--including the DAK armor! They wrote down they were fighting Germans. Very sad that the Italians are remembered only for their mishaps and not their successes--of which there were many in North Africa, including the destruction and routing of the 3rd Indian Motor Brigade. In nearly every successful DAK armored assault, there were predominantly Italian tanks and tankers that made it up. But I understand that Warlord wanted to have a 'German only' force against the 8th Army. I hope to see either some joint Italo-German forces vs 8th Army or some Italian vs 8th Army boxes at some point.

  • @ModellingforAdvantage

    @ModellingforAdvantage

    Жыл бұрын

    Most of the Panzerarmee Afrika was Italian armour, but the DAK itself was but one korps, though it was entirely German. Bolt Action is a platoon level game. A lot of writers use the terms interchangeably but they are definitely not the same. A box with Italians would have been nice for sure, but starter sets are all about the poster child units which I understand, they will sell better to new guys.

  • @dang1977

    @dang1977

    @@ModellingforAdvantage I think you're absolutely right about the starter sets needing to have the "poster children" in them. As much as I would have loved to see Italians in this new set, I can imagine that a some new starters might not be overly thrilled with the variable morale rules that the Italians enjoy/suffer from (depending on how the engagement is going).

    My box arrived. The good - lots of plastic :) The not-so-good - The vehicle models are fiddly to build, and the instructions are not great (the sprue has part numbers, so why not use them in the instructions?); you cannot actually build the forces pictured in the book with the sprues provided. A big problem for a 'starter' box aimed at newbies. I am an experienced model builder so I can work around these problems, but it really should be better than this.

    Totally agree If you're a newbie not being able to build what is shown could be confusing. For example, the booklet shows 7 DAK figures in prone position, but you only get 4 prone figures in the box. Same with the Brits the booklet shows 18 standing figures but only 16 standing figures in the box. As you say not much of an issue for experienced gamers but as a starter set not good, Warlord being dishonest?
