Nina literally looks like she's walking on and just showing us a bit of what she does, it's natural. Even her facial expression is just as free as can be. It's incredible how terrific she is. ❤ This is why i love watching ever role she does.

Nikulina is beautiful, but nothing compares to Kapsova. She makes it look effortless, airy and playful. I doubt if this split screen would be favorable for anyone next to Nina. She just owns this dance.

It was the video of Kaptsova dancing this variation that revived my love for ballet, back in 2013. Every time I rewatch it I can’t help but thinking she woke up the day of this performance and thought: “today I’ll deliver something iconic”. She truly did! This remains my favorite choreography for this variation and Nina is still one of my favorite dancers ever.

Oh dear! Kaptsova in sublime in this role. Nikulina looks so nervous, like she's having a terrible time on stage. It brings to mind something a ballet teacher once told me. He said, you know dancers spend years working on their turnout, and extension, and the arch of their feet, and what does the audience look at... their face. So very true...

  • @elinat2414

Hmm, as regular watcher of ballet (but not a dance myself), sure I look at the face to gage emotion, but mainly it’s the dancing. Also, when you’re sitting in a giant theatre, a lot of the time you can’t see the face that well. Both are important of course, and great performers have both. But I think a dancer with spectacular technique and slightly wooden expressions is still better than a dancer with an amazing acting performance but sub par technique.

Also Nikulina looks a little sloppy at "rest" positions. I am not a dancer but Kapstova seems to really put together in slower and more restful positions instead of just letting her guard down like Nikulina does. At 1:44. It seams like Nikulina prepares for something that comes next with that "sloppy" woble at her sikrt but it's just a part of the dance for Kapstova who seems to just glide through the air.

I actually find Nikulina more composed and at ease. She is not rushing. She is serene. Grinning is not always a sign that the dancer is enjoying herself more. I personally love it when a dancer is more esoteric and uses musicality to express herself rather than extreme facial expressions. Less is more. I think its very unfair to judge her performance as nervous, there is no sign of it.

Anna Nikulina’s performance is wonderful, and this comment thread has been distressing. The comments including personal abuse (“disgusting!”, “a fish thrown on shore”) must frighten young dancers who come here to learn something. They’ll wonder, “what will people write about me if one of my dances is posted?” For that matter, what audience of good taste and manners wants to spend a night at the ballet if it means being surrounded by this kind of scorn? [UPDATE: the most abusive comments have now been pushed lower in the thread by the KZread algorithm or deleted. I appreciate that after this comment originally ran, some fans of both artists engaged to raise the tone of discourse.] In art, as in debate, a person who throws a personal insult automatically forfeits. The group that rushed into this thread with invective did not come here to educate. They did not come here to build up ballet. They just came here to enjoy hurting a human being. Anyone who has been bullied recognizes the group dynamic of onlookers staying silent for fear of the mob turning their attack on them. Anna Nikulina is not just a great dancer; she is a heroic dancer. Every movement and gesture she makes in this piece is an artistic choice. At the beginning, for example, she gently taps her toes as if testing the waters. It looks like maybe she’s making a mistake; we are expecting the traditional music-box Tinkerbell implied by the celesta. One commenter complains she lacks the traditional crispness. But she is going out of her way to be NOT crisp. She is signaling that in this Russian version she is not a wind-up doll in a child’s candy land. Rather, she is Marie, an aristocratic girl on the verge of womanhood exploring in dream what she will be like when older. Anna decides to play it regal and bold, not girly. As she dances in ever-widening concentric circles at a quickening pace she alters her character to match the different accent notes of the celesta and strings. Altering for artistic expression the “right way” to perform a technique is not a sign of defect; it is what elevates ballet to a fine art, above a decorative art or a sport. To see another video of Nikulina performing at the edge of technical and artistic limits, search KZread for “Superb dancers nikulina”. Young dancers can learn much from her: she has been cast in over 50 solo and leading roles at the Bolshoi over the past 20 years. She has been cast and promoted by FOUR different artistic directors during that time, one of the steady workers through some epically tumultuous times. The choreographer of this very Nutcracker version - Yuri Grigorovich - is a supporter. And when a great choreographer trusts one of his defining works to a particular dancer, well, it’s time to ignore the comments and watch the show in awe. (Thank you DanceLine Ballet for creating this excellent video.)

I personally haven't seen many, if any, insults to Nikulina in this video from the several top comments made here. Unless they're in Russian, then in which case I wouldn't know or understand. Technical preference or observations doesn't equate to hating or insulting someone. There's a difference between saying someone's dancing is "more stiff" or "more fluid" or "I prefer the personality that A gives to the dance compared to B" versus throwing out of pocket insults like "she has no talent" or "A is so much more beautiful than B" or "B doesn't know how to dance". Most people here acknowledge that both women are talented ballerinas, it's just that they have a preference of one over the other. Which is perfectly okay. Especially when both dance quite differently when it comes to style, and technique. If you want to see true toxicity, then open up a comment section on any American influencer or Kpop group. Because that will really give you an idea of how nasty fans can be.

@@Lena-zn4re Thank you. The ad hominems mostly came in the first week, with suspicious commonality of language and timing. You have prompted me to add an update edit in my comment explaining that most bad comments have been pushed to the bottom or deleted. Yes, many of the nasty comments were in Russian. The authors may not have realized that auto-translate is now used widely by viewers. Their in-group chatter is readily viewable in English or other languages. Technical comments are great! Great, that is, if they include a technical explanation and are positive. “She looks sloppy” is just a sneaky and unanswerable put-down. (Where (timestamp)? In what way? Are you sure it is not a conscious artistic effect? A variant school of dance?) I would hope that ballet videos don't become reduced to floor exercises, with a chorus of points deductions in the comments. Or worse, voting on who is prettier. I would hope these videos allow us to point out transcendent elements of performances and create new fans.

@@russelldavis2248 Ahh I see. That’s good to know. I, fortunately, did not have the pleasure of reading those nasty comments. It’s great that KZread has implemented an auto translate feature, though I don’t believe it’s accessible for use on desktop, which is where I made my original comment. My bad. And you’re very true, criticisms should be backed up by some kind of reasoning. It’s how people can improve. I don’t think any person would get the motivation to be better by being insulted. But I think it’s also important to note that not everyone watching these videos has the experience and/or knowledge of the craft to cohesively write out their thoughts and reasonings. For example, I randomly stumbled upon this video because it popped up on my recommended page. I have no technical knowledge beyond the basics to make an observation that provides something valuable. I can only view the two performances and state which one I liked more. For reasons I don’t quite fully know myself. And that’s what I saw from a lot of the English comments here. Most mainly noted factors like facial expressions or fluidity of movement from the dancers when making their preferences. And while it’s most likely intentional by both of the dancers as a result of different interpretations and style, to the untrained eye, it doesn’t necessarily come off that way. Thank you, however, for being that person with that knowledge and explaining some things that us common folk most likely missed about the artistic and technical choices made by these two. Maybe people will view both performances in a new light after doing so.

They were both fantastic. But, I do have a favorite between the two. Assuming it's Nikulina on the left and Kaptsova on the right, I preferred Kaptsova. These are not different interpretations, the choreography is meant to be the same between these two performances. That said, Kaptsova, I feel, was more accurate and precise. Her movements flowed smoother to the music, more on-que. Every move was sharp and accurate, with the speed to match the music while going across the stage. Nikulina was beautiful in her dance too, but she was slower in many parts, needed to improvise slightly in a couple areas, and seemed to struggle a bit in comparison. Also, Kaptsova's tutu looked better maintained.

There are gazillion performances of the Sugar Plum Fairy... Kaptsova's is one for the ages... She throws in triple pirouettes on point like it is nothing all throughout this solo.... Incredible.... Unbelievable displays of technique that look simply effortless... A true Russian Prima Ballerina......There is simply no comparison with the other dancer at all...(I even wondered if Nikulina was one of the infamous dancers of the Bolshoi that progressed through the ranks by sleeping with the director!) Every aspect of Kaptova's performance is an absolute display of mastery of the classical technique...

    1. This is one performance so you really can’t tell the better dancer. 2. The lighting might have been better on the left but technically the one on the right was better 😂. Her turns were sharper, her ankles were strong, her feet were pointed and fast, her hand placement never faltered. You can tell who never danced ballet by comments like this.

Technically the dancer on the right is cleaner and stronger imho. Watch the pique turns & emboités and watch the feet. Also on the developé relevé battement/attitude ..... Stronger more solid and into the pirouette en dedans, the dancer on the right does a triple and the other does a double. She's just stronger technically from my perspective. But fun to watch them both.

Aside the technique differences Kaptsova's performance is better because she interprets the role. She's giving to her performance enough space to "breath" and she doesn't dance with the metronome, always on beat something that makes dancing mechanical. Her dancing has fluidity.

Nikulina's performance is wonderful, but Kaptsova's is nothing short of magical, and comparing the two on social media just doesn't feel fair somehow. Each has their own style & interpretation, as well as experience & physical abilities. Kaptsova almost floats on air, her arms have such grace & her expressions so perfectly convey the beauty of this joyful dance. It is clear that she is nothing short of perfection, but if we were seeing Nikulina's performance without that comparison, we would all be praising her artistic skill, grace & talent.
