Bokeh? $400 Japanese Canon summilux VS $4000 Leica 50 mm F1.4 Summilux lens, worth it?

In this video, I compared two of my favorite 50mm lenses for Leica cameras.
I was using both lenses on the leica M-P, and on a tripod to get direct comparison pictures.

Would be interesting to compare the Canon Japanese summilux with a classic Leica 50 summilux of the same period . Thanks for the review 👍

Thanks.. I am picking up a new M11 this spring (on waiting list) and trying to decide on a 28, 35, 50, and 90 for M. The 1.4 summilux is looking great. Have you compared it to the new Leica 50 cron or the new Lanthar 50 f2.0 from Voigtlander? Thanks.

Hello Anne. Thanks a lot for watching. I have 50mm Summicron v1 v2 v4 v5, v5 is the current version with flare issue. Summicron V2 (Rigid) is the best looking 50mm lens in my mind. I would pick 50mm f1.4 Asph 11892 as my first choice. I also like 35mm Summicron Asph and 35mm Summicron V4, 28mm f5.6 summaron. (I have used all the 35mm Leica lenses except the 35mm Apo). Haven’t used the new Voigtlander 50mm F2, had a voigtlander 35mm f1.4 before, it was a nice looking lens with huge distortion. Hope I have answered your question

I have never used the Leica lens, but I have a perfect Canon like yours. While it is very well made, so far, I have not noticed a WOW image moment using it. But, I haven't used it enough to have a solid opinion about image quality.

If you want a "WOW image moment" with an old Canon 50mm LTM, I would recommend the version with the largest aperture of F:1.8. The 50mm F:1.2 is way too soft and the F:0.95 Dreamlens shown in this video is out of reach for the vast majority of us... kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKCc06qjYrGcZLQ.html

I had the canon and regret selling it. Will prob buy another. This lens is best for portraits, thats where its character and bokeh shines. For architecture and landscape not so much. Its also very good for black and white.

Well strange comparison here (old vs modern) and the winner is not a surprise… now putting 4k$ in a 50mm is it really reasonable ? Personally I don t think so but of course it depends the way of living :).

The 50/1.4 LTM v2 is excellent, better than the v1 shown here, I have compared against a few other 50s, it held up well. Still can't see a reason to own one besides a Summilux, but if you don't want to spend the money, it's way better value. Recommended.

Thanks a lot for watching. I have an early canon 50 1.4 LTM as well as a later one. The one I used in the video is the early one with perfect condition, only light dust inside, so I was thinking using this to compare. I bought canon after Leica just for vintage vibes and different bokeh. And you can check out my latest open box video for a Vintage leica 50mm Summilux . Thanks a lot for the comment😋

@@caldera878 Bruh I own this canon ltm and love it, just as much as my two e43, my nikon 50 1.4 ltm made for the S. I love characters in lenses. what I was saying is, its a lens comparison and the only sample images are of a fence comparing sharpness, which everyone knows the result of. its not new info and def shouldn't be the only sample shots. Anyways didnt mean to offend, I apologize to the uploader if I did.

passcom compass No worries at all. The reason I took pictures of the fence, is for checking the distortion level. And the bokeh characters are still there. I am using both digital and film cameras. Not like those people who only focus on new lenses or think the most expensive modern large aperture lens would be the best. A lot of vintage movie lenses are much more rarer than those modern lenses, and have unique bokeh instead of regular blurry pictures

Since Bokeh, particularly the swirly variety is mainly the result of residual spherocal aberration, then dont expect any well corrected lens from Leica or anyone else to show ' bokeh ' orbwahtever it s called these days. There are many cheap as chips Soviet era lenses that show p!enty of swirl for no money. I foe one couldnt give a damn about this bokeh. Live long and prosper, and stay away from undercorrected shite lenses.Thank you.

6:39 Speaking about copying, one thing you should know is the "Japanese Summilux" - Canon LTM 50mm f/1.4 was born more than a year before Leica release their 50mm f1.4 (probably 1959-1960). The nickname is just the overshadow effect from Leica fame and not to emphasize that Canon has actually learn anything from Leica. Mind your words! Sure, one huge dislike and hope that you will have good research next time.
