A pretty big portion of this episode was about Bojack trying to make sense out of his mom 'seeing him' and how much it mattered to him what was it about him that she said it. And given that Bojack apparently can't even tell if he's at the wrong funeral despite it being full of reptilians just tells you how little he himself cares to 'see' other people and once again proving how much of a narcissist he really is. That's just brilliant writing and an excellently crafted joke.

In the prologue we hear Bojack’s dad talk about Beatrice seeing a play and getting ideas. That play was called A Dolls House by Hendrik Ibsen, the play is about a woman in an unhappy marriage, and leave to try and find freedom and meaning. That is why Beatrice was weeping in her room, because of the parallels between her own life and the play. You might also remember Beatrice noting to Bojack that Horsin’ Around was Ibsen, this gives us context to her high praise of this writer. Note I haven’t seen the play and know very little about the actual plot, I’m just paraphrasing a comment I remember seeing a while ago. Edit: I just listened to the play and I seriously recommend it. My comment doesn’t do the production justice and the parallels between Beatrice’s life and the main character Nora are more numerous than I thought. A comment below gives a much more accurate synopsis of the play, but again, I seriously recommend watching or listening to this play in one form or the other. I listened to it on Audible, but I’m pretty sure it on YT for free.

I read this play about 15 years ago. It stars "Nora," whose life up until the end of the play revolved around her husband and children with no real awareness of or impact on the outside world, kept and played with by her husband like a doll in a doll's house. (Spoilers!) Nora realizes this in the finale in addition to realizing that she didn't really know her husband at all - she'd built up a fantasy ideal of him in her mind, but the man that he actually was flipped from Jekyll to Hyde on her when he found out that they were getting blackmailed because of her mistake (she'd forged papers to get money to help him recover from an illness). Given Beatrice's activist aspirations as depicted in Time's Arrow, to realize that she had traded her potential as an individual for a miserable wife-and-mother family life (with her own version of a husband who started nice but flipped to cruel when things got tough)... I can see how it would have shattered her and left her sobbing.

SEASON 6 FINALE SPOILERS BELLOW: In the very last episode of the show (6x16), we see BoJack putting together a Hedda Gabler play (written by Hendrik Ibsen). When he laters talks about this with Princess Carolyn, in a very similar way that his mother complained, he mentions "I mean, it's not Strindberg, but, you know, we're having a good time". I always took this as a "nothing these two do/see is never going to be enough, isn't it?". They will always complain... But now you made me wonder if BoJack sees himself reflected in a Strindberg play.

All three of us were drowning, and we didn't know how to save each other, but there was an understanding that we were all drowning together. This is by far my favorite quote from Bojack Horseman because this perfectly explains toxic relationships. Especially in a toxic home environment. Everyone in the relationship is getting hurt and you know they’re getting hurt but you don’t know how to comfort each other or handle it properly or in a healthy way. So instead you used the same abusive methods that you learn from you’re environment because that’s the only way you can express your feelings or because you were taught that those toxic teachings are normal or that you’re so used to violence and abuse, you use it on other people including your family. A never ending cycle of abuse and hatred. Everyone in the relationship is doom for to suffer but there this mutual and familiar understanding that they’re suffering together because no matter how much they hurt each other. In a fuck up and twisted way, only the toxic people in your family know you better.

Your comment touched me. As the child of an abusive mother who's getting older by the day I strongly connect to Bojack in this episode. Sometimes I think her death would bring me solace, but at the same time loosing her without being able to have closure is my biggest nightmare. I don't know how you feel, but all I can tell you is: no matter how much chances you missed, it's not all on you, and it shouldn't feel like it is. Any kind of relationship is an exchange and it's up to both the people in it to sustain it. So, it was not up only to you. Plus, once someone in our Life dies all we have left is what they gave us, and if all your father gave you was pain I truly hope you find the strength to take that pain and transform it. At the end of the day, you still got your life, don't waste it on regrets, build and give back love to those who are left. Be better than your parents. That's your closure. I hope I haven't been insensitive and this message finds you well. Good luck on your healing process. From a broken family child to another ❤️

I get how you feel at 21:00. To me, growing up is when you realise everyone else is just as lost as you are, including you're parents. We're all just bumbling our way through this life, with a brave face for the sake of appearance. I don't think there is anything wrong with that, it's the human condition. But once you figure it out, it's so much easier understand those who hurt you and let go.

The opening speech by Butterscotch is really damn difficult. "THHHAAAANNNNKKKKK YOOOOOUUUU??????!!!" This is pretty much just a monologue and it's amazing. But I feel a mixture of laughter and sadness when Bojack realizes his mother was just reading the sign.

And Bojack internalized that and said the same thing himself in the eulogy. Psychological violence begats psychological violence in this show. The same way his mother's speech about him singing the lollipop song is, more or less, the same speech he gave Sarah Lynn, and that shaped her life view til she died.

Yay, Free Churro! The episode I've been anticipating since the show was announced! This is one of the really special episodes that Bojack manages to pull off. It's 25 minutes of Will Arnett pouring his heart out in a fantastically written monologue! It's filled with humor, pain, and remorse. All Bojack has known for his life is the awful treatment from his parents, and when he finally thought he was given a gesture of kindness, it wasn't genuine. It's heartbreaking, but also so real. Raise a churro to anyone out there who's experiencing pain and suffering; it gets better. Thanks for being you!

This episode may have been one of the most triggering for me personally. My mother would actually lie to me and say she wanted to go get coffee with me or wanted to hang out and run errands. Then she would lock the doors and scream at me for hours while driving around. Once she made me do the driving to multitask because I had failed my driving test. I didn't take another driving test for over a yea, and I didn't get my license until junior year of college because I would get triggered every time I got behind the wheel. Butterscotch's "TTTTTHHHHhhhhaaaaaaank yooooooooou" is one of the sound bytes that will haunt me forever because of my mom. Thank you both for watching and commentating this show. I don't know if you know how much it means to your followers. Seriously. I love you both.

We can't absolve our parents for failing to raise us properly, just because they had problems in their childhood. We can forgive them but we can't excuse it. If you are choosing to become a parent, then you are likely mid to late 20s or early 30s, which is more than enough time to self improve and unlearn the harmful things from your parents influence, before deciding having kids yourself. Parents toxicity has no excuse.

After all these years still one of the best episodes of television. The fact that Bojack’s dad is also voiced by Will Arnett, so this entire episode is only him, and yet every line is just a punch to the gut and so impactful, is incredible. This and “fish out of water” are the best episodes of the show imo.

I love this episode. It's like a stand-up routine with the combination of heartbreaking past and the sharp left at jokes and the funeral home looks like a stage set. I enjoy when comedy gets real like this. Like those memes "every joke is a cry for help". You can tell a joke, but if it doesn't allow the audience to make a connection, it will always fall flat or be forgotten.
