i don’t think people understand that Rami’s job wasn’t to replace or imitate Mercury, but to honour and respect him. i 100% believe Rami deserves the oscar for best actor because he truly captures the image of Mercury and though they may not look the same, it still brings tears to my eyes. thank you Rami, for bringing my idol back to life

To me it was the ather way around, like he imitate him good, like move during concerts and all but he didn’t capture Freddie’s essence, he was just acting and while watching the movie All I saw was someone acting, and you not suppose feel that, this role wasn’t “real” for me

It was actually completely intentional. As it was an event that happened during which viewers will have been alive for they felt it best to basically move for move recreate the whole thing. It's quite amazing and magical to watch.

I'm proud to say that I went to school with Rami back in 1999-2002 and studied abroad a semester with him at harlaxton in England. Funny thing is that he sang Bohemian Rhapsody at a karaoke night while there. He or any of us had no idea at the time the connection to the song he'd have someday! I wish I could go back in time and record that karaoke night. He also did some impressive theater work even then. Proud to see where he's accomplished since then!

Wrong, from Wiki Bohemian Rhapsody, A quote from Brian May "The vocal harmonies was something we wanted to do from the beginning, as we are always keen to do that kind of thing. We wanted to be a group that could do the heaviness of hard rock, but also have harmonies swooping around all over the place. We thought there was some real power and emotion in that combination. The guitar solo was pretty much off the cuff, except I think I had plenty of time to think about that one. I remember playing along with it in the studio for a while when other things were being done. I knew what kind of melody I wanted to play. " - Brian May, 1982

Jerod Fortenberry I totally agree... no matter how much training, practice, coaches for movement, time, etc., there is just no question about it. Freddie Mercury was an absolute ORIGINAL. All Rami Malek could do was try and capture the spirit and vibe of Freddie for film. I think he succeeded in his efforts, but we all love & appreciate Freddie so much, it’s just hard to see the side by side comparison of the two performers.

I think it is supposed to be like that The fact that Freddie was a super charismatic legendary and irreplaceable figure who could hold hundreds of thousands of people watching him from 100+ meter away or even on screens in the palm of his hand is the reason why this movie was made and what was celebrated in it. I would say, considering the shoes Malek had to fill, especially with the performances in the arenas stuff- he did a superb job :) but if he had the same presence as Freddie, he would not be äcting him, he would be on that kind of stages performing :). I don't know anyone in the world who could do that at the moment :).

Freddie's voice is iconic and unique, but his legend is his performances. Beyond being a phenomenal vocalist and great songwriter, he was above all a performer, connecting with his audience in a powerful way. Rami nailed his persona. I didn't expect much of the movie, but am happy to say I was proven wrong. Every aspect was a terrific tribute, not only to Freddie but to the entire band.

I think for all the people down here in the comments making movie critiques saying how bad Rami portrayed Freddie... The directors and casting weren't trying to replace Freddie with someone. They were attempting to pay homage to his memory and legacy as a person and performer. Of course Rami isn't going to be exact and his movements are going to look a little forced. I recall Rami saying he went to a movement coach to learn how to move like Freddie. He learned hence the forced actions he displayed. It came naturally to Freddie, and a large part of trying to portray him was those on stage performances. Those movements were unnatural to Rami and I think even though they were learned behaviours that he did a good job of portraying the legend that is Fred. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

How Rami speaks of Freddie and the band and him as a spokesperson of the movie are enough reasons why he was a better choice. Rami showed so much respect to the band and Freddie during the promos before and after the movie esp during his Golden Globe win. Can't imagine Sacha doing that.
