    Hello, quick question here I am curious about the wing tip fold, is it because the 777 has a much bigger wingspan? Can somebody explain? Anyways, another impressive aircraft from the Boeing Plant.

  • @EthanPricco

    @EthanPricco

    5 жыл бұрын

    Ian Garrett the Boeing 777X has a larger wingspan than the previous 777 models. Having a larger wingspan means that the plane burns less fuel because larger wingspan=more lift being generated. But due to the larger wingspan, Boeing decided to create the folding wingtips because the folding wingtips would shorten the wingspan on the plane to about the same length of the wingspans of other 777 models. This would allow the 777X to fit into any gate at an airport that a normal 777 can already fit into. This means that many airports across the world wouldn’t have to redesign their gates in order to allow the 777X to fit. I hope this helped.

  • @JundaComputersGmbH

    @JundaComputersGmbH

    5 жыл бұрын

    Ian Garrett It's about ICAO category for airport terminals size of the aerodrome gates to accommodate which types of aircraft Category A (15 meter wingspan limit) Category B (24 meter wingspan limit) Category C (36 meter wingspan limit) Category D (52 meter wingspan limit) Category E (65 meter wingspan limit) Category F (80 meter wingspan limit) Category C is for A220, A320, 717, 727, 737 Category D is for A300, A310, DC-10, MD-11, 757, 767, L-1011 Tristar Category E is for A330, A340, A350, 777, 787, 747-100,200,300,400 Category F is for A380, 747-8 Boeing was kind of stupid in making the 757 with 38 meter wingspan, when the maximum limit under category D is 52m, 757 wasted 14 meter wingspan which could have been about 10% better fuel efficiency, same with 767 at 47 meter wingspan, wasted 5 meters, same with old 737 Classic with 28 meter wingspan, wasted 6 meters and old 747-100,200 had 60 meter wingspan which wasted 5 meters. The reason the Airbus A330 was much more fuel efficient than 767 was because A330 had 60 meter wingspan while 767 had 47, extra 13 meter wingspan made A330 much more fuel efficient and better range than 767 during high altitude cruise. Imagine if the MD-11 had 64.9 meter wings instead of 52 meter wingspan the MD-11 would have been much more fuel efficient and longer range that the MD-11 program would have been a commercial success instead having poor sales of only 200 planes sold out MD-11 could have sold 500+ units So the 777X with foldable wingtips and extra 7 meter wingspan makes the plane more fuel efficient during high altitude cruise and when plane lands the wingtip folds so it still fit under category E Airbus was also thinking of foldable wingtips on new versions of the A380, extending wingspan from 79.8 meter to 95 meter, extra 15 meter wingspan would make A380 10% more fuel efficient and greatly addresses its biggest weakness of poor fuel efficiency, and it will also be available to retrofit existing A380's to give current operators much improved range and efficiency and help Lufthansa, Air France and Qatar Airways into keeping their A380's instead of phasing them out early due to poor fuel efficiency, since 10% better fuel efficient makes the difference between loss or a profit for the A380, and help keep A380's flying for many years to come

The truth of the matter is that ALL modern airliners have MCAS in some form or another. It may not be called MCAS but it is still some form of flight management computer. On any fly by wire aircraft, what do you think converts the pilots commands to hydraulic muscle to operate the control surfaces? Computers! They also monitor the inputs and over ride them to keep the airplane in a protected mode of operation. This is especially true on Airbus fly by wire systems.The issue with the max is not the MCAS itself, but how it was implemented.
