Body positivity and self-love: Embracing your own beauty | DW Documentary

When she looks in the mirror, Akanksha Sood Singh feels shame. The successful filmmaker and mother of two loves her life but hates her body. A flawless figure and unblemished skin - the Indian beauty standards of ‘perfection’ are unattainable. How can she escape that pressure? Photographer and activist Roshni Kumar knows how women can overcome body shame: empowerment and self-love. Roshni takes Akanksha on a journey to recognize her self-worth and love the skin she’s in. Will she rise to the challenge?

I've worked in an assisted living facility where I met a woman who was paraplegic after a cerebal stroke at 37 years old. She told me I would rather be morbidly obese yet able to walk and move and wipe my own ass every day than thin and paraplegic waiting for someone to come and change the damn channel. Like seriously we forget to appreciate that our bodies work. We can walk we can breathe and eat unassisted.

Our bodies will never remain the same, it ages. Perfection is but transient, perfection of the spirit is more important than the body. I am probably going through a similar predicament with my psyche. No matter who tells me what...I think therefore I am ( a bit different 🤪). I feel sorry to have wronged somebody. Thanks for showing the way and making me realise my mistake. DW 🙏

Accepting what you can't change about your body is a great thing. But I must say that it is dangerous to tell people that being obese is ok from a health perspective. To my knowledge obesity is the number one risk factor for most of the major deadly conditions. Obesity is one of the things about your body that you CAN change. Obesity is also an indicator of poor dietary and lifestyle choices. You shouldn't feel ashamed of being overweight, but you should definitely consider the implications.

Obese Patients are the most discriminated in the health industry. Not only in normal society do they face stigma but they face a whole lot of challenges once they try to get help. It's astonishing how people perceive a person who is overweight/Obese as someone that lacks complete control and is deemed lazy and has having a very easy self correction, but that mentality is NOT applied to someone who has drug abuse or alcohol abuse, even though they don't have to consume their substance of choice daily for survival. I think people don't understand that most doctors have no real idea nor they have the training to help. In my opinion it would be much better to remove the stigma especially from the medical field so these patients feel like they can come in and get help and guidance. Most Obese patients avoid care for fear of discrimination that they will certainly get.

Am in US. Was raised by mother who shamed me for being 5'11" in 8th grade and having broad shoulders and 36" inseam, wearing glasses. I loved swooshy skirts and prints, she made me wear box pleats and doubleknit home sewn slacks... in the 1970's! I was lucky to have a friend in 80's who made me buy a fitted silk suit on clearance but still, a motheroutlaw who drug me shopping and picked out the clothes and told me I was pretty. Boyfriends who overlooked the abdominal scars and stretch marks complimenting long shapely legs, thick wavy hair like Akanksha which is now white. It has been a lifelong journey to accepting the body I am in, made harder by developing a neuromuscular disease. I have days when I hate the weakness, the cane, faltering voice and days I really don't care. It is a process

The problem is that being yourself and loving yourself is often perceived as forcing others to accept you. People are still in the position to hide themselves, hah clever to phrase it as you did as to look like you actually care about people loving themselves. They must do it in private, but that means they aren't actually loving and honoring themselves. Maybe it just makes you uncomfortable that people can exist as themselves without your peronal permission?? Wow, how dare they.

🥰 Akanksha has a beautiful skin color, one I've always admired as a Caucasian woman. As someone who most would think has not struggled with weight the majority of my life, I struggled with body image and loving my body. I tend to dress modestly and not show a lot of skin because of that. But one can truly appreciate one's body after having had injuries & chronic health issues and then fighting to get stronger after surgeries. Our bodies are meant to support us with living life and our Creator knew that. So I choose to praise Him through it all because I know our Creator doesn't make mistakes. And once we know better, we can choose better for ourselves. I say that because when one connects the dots in our life and health choices, choosing good healthy fats, healthy protein, low carb and starches, hydration, and movement, we begin to acknowledge the carb addictiveness and can be set free from it. Those carbs feed the bad out bodies don't need for wellness. Be well and love the body you have as you continue to navigate this earlthy life! 😘

With the benefit of modern knowledge, we can dismiss obsessive preoccupation in favor of the simply practical issue of if and how we need to change for health, social or personal reasons. The word ‘need’ can reasonably include ‘want’ because discomfort, lack of self-esteem, and other feelings unhappiness are all worthy of attention.

There was so much fakeness in this. Scripted happenings, those 2 women superficially supporting and opening up to each other, promoting unhealthy lifestyle, self victimization as an excuse to not workout and stay unhealthy. This is a trend in India. Nobody talks about how these same women body shame and feel highly insecure about fit or slim women even though the fit woman's appearance and BMI is in the normal range. And no, when I say fit or slim, I'm not referring to anorexics. How overweight women in India body shame fit or slim women- "Do you eat or not?", "You look like you could die any minute now", "Flat chested" (this is their go-to insult even though the fit woman is perfectly proportionate), "Do you get your periods or not?", "If you look like this, what will you feed your kids?", "Whore! Wears short skirts". Most of those slim/fit women stay physically active, work their as* off, and they are health oriented. Most overweight women in India openly body shame and avoid overweight men. Amazing level of hypocrisy. I didn't expect this type of no-research documentary from DW!

I totally agree with the comment that we should not glorify obesity in any case because it is dangerous to health wellbeing! Accepting oneself for things we cannot change is a good aspect but whatever we can improve for our own wellbeing we must make the efforts necessary. There seems to be a wrong trend in passing off obesity and other bad lifestyle patterns as acceptance and if anyone gives advice well intentioned it is taken as criticism and body shaming and this is wrong. Many people are just lazy and don't want to change their life mindset so they find all excuses of acceptance. I have seen many such cases. When these people face serious implications then they will learn lessons! 🥰👍

I do not understand people obsess with their body. If you have time to think about the shape of your body, you have not enough to do. If you eat right and exercise you feel mentally and physically better. Groom yourself without overdoing it. Smell good, wear a nice perfume and don’t eat spices, onion and garlic because your skin smells like an old kitchen. And keep occupied and find new challenges.

Shaming people's bodies to get them to change is a strange use of your power, and a comfortable lie because that doesn't make people sustainably healthy. Crash dieting is what people who are shamed turned to, and they inevitably gain MORE weight later on due to destroying their metabolism. So, what are you trying to achieve here?

You know what I want to know... Is where did this idea YOU MUST BE ATTRACTIVE....like what's wrong with looking average? I mean why do we all feel like we have to be pretty? Like so what if you are a 5 out of 10. Why do I have to be constantly admired or looking my best or why do we all think every other member of the opposite sex must be looking at us to feel attractive? Like I. Just need to go buy cat food and cigarettes. Can I just look plain? It's not practical to live every day being instagram model. Like I don't need foot long eye lashes or a badonkadonk booty to walk. Does that make sense to anyone?

This is pretty much nonsense. It is nonsense to love your person's body, rather than just appreciating being alive, living. If you can appreciate the latter, then the former is rather insignificant, for of course we are not all handsome, gorgeous, and being the latter certainly does not make a person a good person of good will, etc. People sometimes are too superficial. So, I'll just give this video a Dislike, right away.

But fat people act like society attacks them, when in reality most people just don’t want to be shamed/guilted/coerced into seeing fat (unhealthy) as positive 🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️
