The Steven Avery case was made famous by the release of the Netflix documentary, Making a Murderer. In this 20+ hour docuseries, we are introduced to a story of crooked law-enforcement, criminal behavior, and the tragic loss of a young woman. The globe is divided on Avery’s innocence though. While many are certain that he was guilty, the documentary raises the question if he actually did the crime, or was he framed by the same people who had wrongfully imprisoned him for 17 years just a short time earlier? Instead of relying on documentaries and the word of other people, I turn my attention towards Avery’s nonverbal communication to see if the truth can be discovered.

I do the intentional head nod during conversation. It’s my way of saying “I hear and I understand” without interrupting the person verbally.

It's also very likely something he learned during his first time in prison. Guards will often want to make sure you're listening to them and get pissed if you're not - by making the nod super obvious, he's telling them he's listening and avoiding unwarranted/unwanted confrontation.

If I had been in jail for 17 years over something I hadn’t done, was suing them, and was now being interrogated again, I probably wouldn’t be on the same psychological level as the detective either. I’m a petty cow and would be pissed so I would just sit there.

Except that he had been sketching out a torture chamber in his prison and spoke to inmates about how he wanted to sexually assault and murder women when he got out. He called Halbach to come over, and he was the last to see her. As someone who just idk LIVES in Manitowoc, he was a scary guy. He stalked his neighbor for months, ran out in the street in front of her naked, and then held her at gunpoint after ramming into her stalled vehicle and wouldn’t leave her alone until she said her daughter would freeze in the cold The guy was a psychopath

@@londonfoggy Yeah the part he ran out in front of her car naked while she's driving past. Like seriously. He's just standing behind a bush naked waiting for her to drive past, in the hope she gets maybe a 1 second look at him naked... And then you're basically having to rely on inmates giving this information that he wanted to murder women when he got out. You have to rely on a statement made by a criminal. That's hardly reliable.

He figured he could get away with it because they had framed him before. He did it. He is not a normal person. Dont assume that he would behave anywhere near the same as you would in the same situation. I'm willing to guess, you never would have been on the cop's radar to be framed in the first place.

So I never seen Making A Murder, until on Jan 18 I saw part 2 of this analysis and completely disagreed that Avery's body language meant that he was guilty - because I saw a man who had contempt and discomfort and sadness that it seemed like he was going to be framed again. So it was watching part 2 of this analysis that compelled me to watch the show myself. I just finished part 2 today and genuinely cannot comprehend how anyone could believe that Avery is guilty without reasonable doubt. Honestly, you people all need to watch the docuseries. We do know from the CASO Investigative File that Coroner Klaeser did visit the Manitowoc County Quarry [because Calumet Sheriff Sergeant Bill Tyson discusses some of the activities Coroner Klaeser participated in in one of his reports.](imgur.com/gallery/jV64mhX) We also know from [CASO Report page 278](imgur.com/gallery/wt537u4) that not only are these reports written days after the fact most of the reports were not written by the detective who performed these events that is being recorded as having occurred at a specific time on a specific date in a specific location. You can’t always use these to predict someone will murder a person. These behaviors are more likely in a person with low IQ and living in poverty. They often get bored and have nothing to do so they get into trouble and have a hard time distinguishing right from wrong with an IQ as low as his. I think it was in the low 70s. The kids I grew up around got bored and did things like set fires and stole from people a lot. It was sad to see. You’d also be surprised that a lot of people from these poverty areas mess with animals because they are bored. It’s really gross and sad. Things like strapping bottle rockets to frogs. It’s disgusting, but it doesn’t mean they will kill a person.

I would say yes because despite whatever “universally/culturally” recognized signals the majority may give, he speaks of individual baselines which trump all. A person on the spectrum is still going to have their own individual baseline or non verbal code which can be studied and analyzed. The same way an up and down nod means yes in one culture but not for another; It could mean a professional may first need to have some understanding of known non verbal tendencies for those on the spectrum as a group. From there I imagine a pro being able to determine an individual’s baseline and form an educated opinion regarding deception like anyone else.
