Body cam footage of Bryan Kohberger traffic stop

PULLMAN, Washington (Courtesy of Idaho Statesman) - Moscow defendant Bryan Kohberger talked his way out of a traffic ticket for running a red light in Pullman, Wash., the month before the November killings, newly released police body-cam footage obtained by the Idaho Statesman shows.
The 9 1/2-minute video shows a Washington State University campus police officer pull over and park behind Kohberger in a campus parking lot on Oct. 14, 2022. Kohberger was seated behind the wheel of his white 2015 Hyundai Elantra with a Pennsylvania license plate.
WSU Police Officer Isobel Luengas approached the driver-side window and explained the infraction before asking for Kohberger’s license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance.
“I think you know why I stopped you. You ran the red light,” Luengas told Kohberger, who explained he was stuck in the middle of the intersection. “I was behind you the whole time,” she responded.
Kohberger, then a WSU graduate student living in Pullman, sought the specifics of the law, detailing how he’s from rural Pennsylvania. He wasn’t aware of the potential violation, he said.
“We actually don’t have, like, crosswalks,” Kohberger said. “There’s a little bit more leeway as well … like there’s one white line and there’s another one in front, like, there’s a certain margin from which you can actually kind of put your vehicle and place your vehicle.
“I’m just curious about the law. I don’t mean to disagree with anything,” he added.
Along with video of another traffic stop of Kohberger in August in Moscow, homicide investigators cited the WSU traffic stop footage in a probable cause affidavit for Kohberger’s December arrest in eastern Pennsylvania. They noted that the officer’s body-cam video depicted him as the driver and sole occupant of a white sedan with a Pennsylvania plate.
A Statesman public records request for the body-cam footage of Kohberger’s Aug. 21, 2022, traffic stop in Idaho for driving without a seat belt was previously denied by the Latah County Sheriff’s Office, citing its potential to impede a person’s right to a fair trial. No written report on the stop exists, the department’s records manager said.
In the new video, Luengas noted that Kohberger’s registration was current, with an expiration of Nov. 22, 2022, which is the day after Kohberger’s date of birth. Citing vehicle registration data, police said Kohberger registered his car in Washington on Nov. 18 - five days after the homicides in Moscow took the lives of U of I students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.
Police body-cam footage from Indiana on Dec. 15 showed Kohberger, 28, driving the white sedan, with his father in the passenger seat, during two traffic stops within 10 minutes of each other on eastbound Interstate 70. The car had a Washington license plate as they drove cross-country to eastern Pennsylvania during Kohberger’s winter break from school.
Fifteen days later, on Dec. 30, police arrested Kohberger at his parents’ home in eastern Pennsylvania. He is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary.

People keep saying you can see the evil in his eyes, he looks evil or terrifying... They're just projecting onto him. He looks like a normal unremarkable decent guy. Doesn't come across as a know-it-all what so ever. His questions are completely justified and sensical. The truly scary thing is the fact that that he looks & sounds so normal.

This is actually a bizarre law, because it tends to slow down traffic, as well as making it more dangerous to do a left turn. It's completely legal to do that in many states.

Not defending this guy, but I would have been similarly confused if I'd been pulled over for this. So many people in WA state do that. Many times it's bc the lights turn so fast, there's tons of traffic that get you stuck in the middle (on-coming traffic never stops when their light turns yellow), or there are single lanes on both sides. It's awful here in Gig Harbor.

some people watch too much tv and think cold-blooded murderers walk around with a death stare or grimace on their faces, so they project that image onto videos like this. they view perfectly normal interactions as creepy or intense. the reason a lot of evil people don't get caught right away or sometimes ever is because they're great at compartmentslizing their emotions and blending into society.

He didn't act normal to me. "Normal" a non murderer type normal. He sounded manipulative. He was looking at her with crazy eyes. He already knew he got out of the citation/ticket/fine. Then he laid it on a little thicker with the apology for, in case he was asking too many questions. He played dumb to get what he wanted. No matter what state you live in. Common sense would tell you not to block traffic. I went to school and worked with a guy that stabbed his mother to death with a pair of scissors. I could see and my intuition told me there was a lot wrong with him. Many people considered him to be a real nice guy. I have known other people that were manipulative and fooled other people, but not me. More people need to really listen to their own intuition about people.

I am 62 years old and been driving since I'm 16 and I have ALWAYS entered the intersection if I'm the first car in line. I learned to drive and and lived on Long Island for most of that time. That said, where I live now, in Connecticut, people stop and do not proceed into the intersection which I find frustrating. The REASON you proceed into the intersection is so you don't get stuck sitting at the same light forever. It makes sense to proceed into the intersection. I hope they don't consider it an aggravating circumstance in court.

We don't have crosswalks in PA? lol Yes we do. Lived here all my life. Still, the green light here in PA means you can go unless you KNOW the traffic stopped moving, and it would place your car in an intersection. This is a citable offense in most areas of Pittsburgh and referred to as gridlocking. It makes an already bad situation worse, but police do not typically give citations for this unless traffic is completely blocked off so cars and buses can't get around them. I think the general rule is that if the mass transit buses can get around, you are good to go. The only areas that do not have crosswalks here are local municipality streets. ALL city streets here have crosswalks, and you are never to stop on them because it puts pedestrians in harm.

I have apparently never lived in a state where it's illegal to enter the intersection and wait for my chance to turn left even if the light starts to turn yellow while I'm in the intersection. That's perfectly fine. My entire life of driving, in every state I've been in, everyone has always done that and it has never been an issue. I've never seen a wreck from someone turning left out of an intersection after the light turns yellow or even red. In CA we can roll through a Red on a Right IF you come to a complete stop, no forward motion. But, it is supposed to be with the total vehicle behind the lines / crosswalk, etc. Which is a pain because often you cannot see clearly around the corner unless you pull forward. IDK if "CA stops" are in other states, but in CA it can often have a sign that says "NO TURN ON RED" which clarifies. Very professional and polite officer, took the time to clarify. However, he is clearly in violation of the laws bcuz he is residing in WA State but his plates & ID are PA, which is illegal. I'll add this: A friend of mine went to fight a 'right on red' ticket here in CA. She stopped, counted to three and went and got a ticket. It was on camera, so she fought it. There's usually a video clip you can access. Anyway, she stopped with part of her bumper in front of the line. The judge watched the video and asked her if she was chewiing gum, and she said, "No. I was counting. One thousand, two thousand, three thousand, to be sure I was stopped for a full three seconds." They gave her the ticket because she was forward of the "lines" before she stopped. Ticket was a couple hundred dollars. So, learn from her mistake: stop behind the line, all forward motion. The '3 second thing is an old guideline, no a rule. But, it is a reasonable guideline for safety.

I was confused what it's about but towards the end, if I get it right, it's a green light and he goes into the intersection but he's stuck there because there are/is a car in front stopping him from getting out of the intersection? I have been in that same situation before (like in unexpected slow traffic), until I learned not to enter the intersection only when there is room to move out of it. Didn't know there is law or whatever but just doing it as a good driving behavior.
