Body Armor vs Chest Rig: My Thoughts

I was a LEO in Florida in the 90's, body armor was thicker and heavier than today. I used to carry instant ice packs with me. In heat that was 90+ degrees with 90+ humidity, I pop an ice pack, drop it between the front pad and my chest and the ice pack would last 15 to 20 minutes. It wasn't comfortable but I believe it saved me from heat stroke several times.

Body armor didn’t really get comfortable until probably the last 10 years. And even at that rate, comfort is subjective. On the job, I don’t care I’m wearing it. In a SHTF scenario I can be a little more selective. And yeah, it’s still hot.

My plate carrier runs lvl 3+ plates 10*12, 3 mags, a admin pouch, backpack made for the carrier and a Cold Steel recon tanto. 15lbs total. Still heavy but doable. 6' 200lbs and 16% bf.

I have two main Battle Rattle setups. I have a 1950s H suspenders attached to a Condor gun belt with a mix of MOLLE and ALICE pouches attached to it. And a small chest rig that will accept my level 3 dynema 3.5 Lb Front plate and will carry a minimum of either two 33 round Carbine Glock mags or two 30 rd AR mags and two Glock Pistol mags and IFAK kit and essential tools as a Medic that I sewed up. I’m a Cold War Vet and was military Medic and registered EMT before I became a respiratory therapist for 40 years. A few surgeries and herniated disks have slowed me up but I’m not out of the fight just yet. My DIY chest rig allows me to carry a back pack with Bump Helmet and supplies to keep other guys in the fight and to treat the wounded. It also carries my water and a nylon rain jacket. So depending on my circumstances or role either setup will work. Unless pinned down or assaulting a position, two mags at the ready and one in the gun is plenty. More can be carried by my butt pack or back pack. Either setup allows me to scale up. In the medic role or in and out of vehicle for self protection my folding Keltec Carbine has a one point sling attachment at the butt of the stock to a D ring on the right shoulder strap and can be carried folded to allow me access to caring for my patients or Getting in or out of a vehicle, or it can be unfolded and ready for use. I have a similar one point attachment to the right shoulder on my 1950s LCE Suspenders for the AR. The benefits being less crap around my neck, quick disconnect or reconnect, and no getting smacked in the nuts with a traditional one point sling. The suspenders and belt setup is for a full combat load out. The DIY light chest rig for medic support role. I liked your video. Going lighter is better, or at the very least repositioning the kit into first, second, or third line carry . There are no complete solutions in life, just trade offs. We can’t carry everything for every situation or at all times. We go to fight with what we have, not what we wished we had.

It is lighter, more comfortable, and generally covers more surface area than hard armor. It’s conceal ability is also a huge plus. For instance, economic collapse leaving civil unrest and you need to go out for supplies. Throw on a concealable vest and a concealed handgun, and you would be fairly adequate

I run ceramic level 3 plates that are curved. They weigh 3.3 lbs a piece. I run three mags on a placard, and one in each front side of the cummerbund. I have an admin pouch in front of the mags on the placard, an IFAK in front of a mag in the front of one side of my cummerbund, and a radio pouch in front of the mag in the other front side of my cummerbund. I run a small dangler in the front, and a Camelbak system clipped to the back for 3 liters. My radio is a small, multi band, digital data packet setup, that is cabled to a foldable antenna located on the back of the rig. It is also cabled to an FCS V20 PTT, and a set of FCS AMPS headset. The whole loaded setup comes in at just over 22 lbs, minus water. I wore a lot of gear for 25 years as a former police officer, so I'm kind of used to it. I just feel like an Umpa Lumpa after many hours in it. LOL Nice video. Thanks.

Ive bin using a PC for a long time and its great, gives me the protection that i need and is great for some uses. But! The one thing i dont like about a PC is not the weight, its that it aint easy using it with a backpack. If you have an shtf situation and you need to get out. The best way i can think is, combine a CR with a backpack... you can take the backpack off to take the stuff you need, without taken of you CR.... its easier to carry. Also if you with some people. You can move them to a save location, take the backpack of and go and scout the area and moving faster. In my opinion, the one thing that makes the PC superior is the protection it gives. It al comes to the context.... just my opinion....

  • @ThatNightShiftNinja

Exactly. Context and intended use. What most people forget or don't realize about plates is that the badasses wearing them are getting a ride to where they're going. There's no way I'd hump a pack wearing plates for an extended period. Hell, I don't even think I'd do it for a limited run. My Marine days are long over and I just can't see myself in a situation where I'd want a pack and plates as an armed prepared citizen.

Is the weight justified? I think it depends on the environment. A lot of preppers get plate carriers just because they feel cool. You can get hit in the femoral artery on your thigh and that extra weight and restricted mobility carried all for nothing. In Vietnam they didn't carry plates and killed a ton of VC. It's the tactitards that push the plates. It's not practical unless you're kicking in doors doing direct action raids. Home defender and prepper won't be raiding Bin Laden's compound. @@ThatNightShiftNinja of course it's mission dependent, but could you give an example of a mission set where carrying 3 mags is ideal?

I did in the video. When I'm doing a static security detail or a vehicle borne.

I don't mean to be snarky, but I did mention several instances in the video where the specific setup would be ideal. Honestly that video is a year plus old. But I can think of any number of instances where having 3 rifle magazines on my person is suitable. Hell maybe even 2. I guess I could address that as a separate topic in a separate video.

@@ThatNightShiftNinja but in veichle borne ops will you always be able to reach the resupply point (veichle)? For example if you dismount and get into vegetation or buildings and are in a firefight will you get out of your postions and run back to grab mags? (That's more for military operations than shtf)
