23 here, and I feel like the movie was more so critical of privileged rich kids in a Gen Z setting, rather than targeting Gen Z as a whole. Felt similar to how Heathers did that for the 80s or Clueless in the 90s (albeit having much more likable characters)

Hi Dead Meat. Former Floridian of over 30 years. I just wanted to comment about the concept of hurricane parties. While i agree it's privileged to be financially well off to never worry about damage of hurricanes, it's a mixed bag of reasons as to why you would have a hurricane party. A very common safety measure that you take during hurricane season is Safety in Numbers. Usually in advance, communities, neighbors, friends formulate a plan to meet at one place to ride out the storm. A common strategy is to pool resources such one family brings flashlights and batteries, another brings packs of water, maybe somone brings their generator etc etc. When a hurricane makes landfall, it usually loses a lot of its strength. I was fortunate enough to live in Central Florida most of my life, so by the time the storm hit us it was usually just an extra windy storm with heavy rain. Work is usually cancelled for 1-3 days before and after the storm hits and power companies are usually pretty quick to restore power. A lot of my experience with hurricanes usually boiled down to getting work cancelled, heading to a friend's or family's house after protecting our own home, playing video games and eating snacks until the power goes out, and then returning home after 2-3 days. The movie kind of makes light of what is usually people making the best of a potentially dangerous situation. However, there's definitely a non-zero amount of people who actually make it a PARTY party which is absolutely privileged (and irresponsible).

Barbarian is also one of those rare horror movies that comes along and seems to suck all the oxygen out of the conversation of other movies. And when you see it you completely understand why it was able to do that. Because H-O-L-Y S-H-I-T it's amazing. One of those movies where i'd call bullshit on anyone that claimed they knew where it was going. It's completely unpredictable. And whoever cut the trailer needs to cut more horror trailers. Because it gives absolutely nothing away while still making the movie look very interesting.

Another great part of Alice's character is her saying multiple times when they find people's bodies is her insistence not to move them, because it's evidence. (Because of COURSE she's into true crime.) As someone into true crime and has also had that reaction baked into my head, it's hilarious to see that part of me in Alice's character, and simultaneously realize how detached that response is in those moments.

As a Floridian, “Hurricane Party” has a vastly different connotation depending on who says it. Growing up we used it in more of ironic sense. To me preparing for hurricane parties means boarding up windows, buying water and batteries for when the water and power goes out, and staying with friends or family for safety. I’ve never thought of a hurricane party as a privilege thing until this movie.

I worked in a movie theater from 2006-2010 and you would not believe how many people would come in and bring their young children. Not tweets, but actual children. We had a woman try to bring her four kids to Hostel. The youngest was probably about 2. I watched my coworker go get our manager and watched him try to explain why she couldn't bring them in. She finally said she'd just go to another theater. I honestly hope the other theater refused her too. I remember being so angry. Like how dumb can you be? Are you actually trying to scar your children? Like my mother took me to see Jurassic Park when I was super little and even that messed me up for a few years.

While I’m super down for another round of Survivor, I wanted to mention another idea. I believe there is an AI generated website for a Hunger Games style thing where you can add characters in pairs and watch who kills who and who does what, and I firmly believe you two would make it super fun!

as a writer, the best advice i've gotten about the "write what you know" thing is, if you're going to include specific details about your personal life, always make sure you're the only one taking the L. if you're relaying a story about how you shat your pants on a bus in the middle of milwaukee that's one thing, but if you were sitting next to that person, maybe have it be that someone threw up on a ferry ride on their way to long island. what matters is the emotional impact of the event and what you as a writer can uniquely say about it, not the embarrassment of some poor person whose permission you didn't ask for, and whose story it isn't yours to tell.

My theater was a crowd of just me and one middle aged guy in the front. I can't remember exactly when, but I heard him unrecline his chair, get up and walk out. I think it was during the gun scene. But he never came back and that was the funniest thing to me

I'm gen Z, and I was laughing the whole time during this movie. It is definitely accurate to how people my age speak and act, which added to this movie's brilliance. And, I must say, I watch a lot of horror and have gotten good at predicting endings, but this ending was phenomonal. No other ending would have compared, honestly.

One thing I don't see being brought up in a lot of discussion about this movie is that this is a primarily female cast and by default, the complex relationships of them being female is never really looked at. I think this movie sort of acts as an antithesis to The Descent, which proudly wore the badge of, "this is a movie about female relationships."

Hurricane parties were the norm for me growing up in Louisiana, but our not well off version of it was always the adults buying alcohol in bulk and smoking outside until the rain got too bad then finally coming inside to drink while the kids were eating the leftovers and anything that would melt and watching TV before the power went out.

Alice really got on my nerves. She is so hypocritical and constantly contradicting herself. Like whenever someone is accused of being the murderer, Alice would immediately agree with the killer and say something like, “That’s true. She has a point”. Like Jesus woman, make up your mind on who’s side you’re on.

i saw a few people talking about the 46:60 go bag! but i am glad you addressed not only how perfectly beautiful Lee Pace is, but also how a go bag would be what an well meaning adult does when asked to go to a new place during a hurricane. 17:20 was me at twitter after watching Bodies^3; this was exactly what i felt the movie satirizing. I was oddly the only person laughing with this movie in my showing but i loved it; all these characters are too real. 33:32 nailed this. love the description!

when i watch television shows or even the movies that james and chelsea are talking about, i need to be on my phone or doing something else or i can't focus on the movie. But when I watch this, which is just a conversation between two people, I am completely enraptured. I forget what time it is when I watch them talk. They are the perfect people for this, both very pleasant to look at, they have amazing chemistry and you can tell they love each other even when they talk about horror, and they have soothing voices. Not to even mention the amazing set I could look at all day. Just. A massive thanks to you both for killing my ADHD every time you post.

I played this exact game a lot growing up, except everyone I know calls it murder in the dark, I played it a lot at church overnight lock-ins. This movie does a really good job making me feel the same way I felt playing this game, just wondering the hallways in the dark never knowing if/when you're safe. And the arguments they have about who the killer are are really spot on.
