I literally cannot imagine calling Bocchi cringe. It was so good 😭. Edit: it's not because bocchi isn't cringe, it's because I viewed it as a deeply relational anime to a lot of people and portrayed what social anxiety can truly be like for people. It also shows her growth very, very slowly throughout the anime. One step forward and two steps back, but its realistic.

I guess it’s cringe in a good way because it hits spots that you want to forget. It’s relatable to the point of cringing because this happened or a similar thing happened to us when we we’re young and/or currently experiencing anxiety and the dumb shit we suddenly decide because of overthinking.

  • @NightFoxXIII

But I believe it's still cringe. Cringe in the sense you self-reflect and you look at how relatable she is and how much certain aspects might remind you of your blunders you did similarly at that age. She's obviously more extreme but there are certain aspects she has in everyone. Even her other newfound friends. It's why the clip is titled as it is. Amazingly CRINGE but in a good way.

The most surprising aspect of Bocchi is how blunt the series is. They didn’t hold back in showing the “painful” moments despite being delivered as a comedic scene. And I said surprising because Bocchi is a kirara series where it’s usually just surface level sprinkled with cute girls I mean, I know we love our drunk girl, but the characters in the series are legitimately annoyed by the drunkard which is kinda rare especially in a cute slice of life series They kept some of the realism a bit which is why the show is easily believable. You can tell how many moments are definitely based on actual experience lol

(🗿don't bother reading, I got carried away, I wrote this much simply because I got carried away ty bye-) While the animation and art direction is on another level, what stuck out about Bocchi to me out of all the other "socially-awkward-introvert amirite?" shows, was how scary and specifically accurate the certain kinds of thoughts and predicaments Bocchi found herself in that--REALLY - REALLY - resonated with me. Most of the time I find most socially awkward characters in other shows, either not written well--or straight up unlikeable. They always lacked the nuance that made it relatable to me. BUT with Bocchi, I surprisingly did not get that. When I first watched Bocchi, I did not expect to receive the internal cringe fest that I got, because h o l y s h i t . In the first episode, the scenes where she would dress a certain way to get the attention of the others, and how she would play the music on the intercom to get the attention of others, was so scarily accurate to certain things I've done in my school years. The nuances of how she would avoid eye contact with people, and how she would overthink people's impressions of her. The time when she differentiated her identity of being a loner, to Ryo's identity of being a "loner"(people who like being alone, and people who don't). It really got me because I was like "YES -- YES -- THERE'S A DIFFERENCE, FINALLY SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDDASJBDAADKAD--". The scene that especially struck me, was when she would catastrophize about her future, about how her sister would grow up to be a parent while she was still hunched in the closet. As an older brother, I related way too fkn hard. I could rant on and on, about every scene pretty much affected me but I won't(because I'll lose it). I realized that the author really knew how to write a character that really conveyed the struggles socially awkward people go through. Wow, I did not expect to write this much, but I guess I did. I got immersed for no reason 🗿

Bocchi is literally me. No other character can come close to relating to me like her. There is no way you can convince me that I’m not Bocchi. Bocchi could not possibly be any more me. It’s me, and nobody can convince me otherwise. If anyone approached me about this not possibly being me, I immediately shut them down with overwhelming evidence that Bocchi was me. Bocchi is absolutely me; it is indisputable. Why anyone would try to argue that Bocchi is not me is beyond me. If you held two pictures of me and Bocchi side by side, you’d see no difference. I can safely look at Bocchi every day and say, “Yup, she’s me.” I can practically see Bocchi whenever I look at myself in the mirror. I go outside, and people stop me from commenting on how similar I look and act as Bocchi is. I chuckle softly as I’m assured every day Bocchi is me in every way. I can smile each time I get out of bed each morning, knowing that I’ve found my identity with Bocchi and I know my place in this world. It’s amusing how similar she is to me; it’s almost like identical twins. When I first saw Bocchi, I had an existential crisis. What it Bocchi was the real me and I was the fictional being? What if she actually became aware of my existence? Did she have the ability to become self-aware?

To put it simply, we all have that "weird" side of us, but bocchi's weirdness is the one that we want to show to people and hope people will accept us who we really are, so we didn't have to pretend to be "normal" to much anymore

As a musician with social anxiety, this anime hit very close to home. Obviously Bocchi's anxiety is a very exaggerated version of how I act, but every part of her thought process when interacting with others was something I could understand on a personal level. My talent in music also allowed me to make friends in high school that I still talk to after college and overall just gave me much more confidence. Seeing Bocchi go through basically my high school life was a surreal experience. I also don't remember the last time an anime made me laugh so hard either. It's actually a 10/10 anime for me, one of very few.

As someone with social anxiety, Watamote has it's value. I think it's because we can laugh at the stupid situations we face daily, despite knowing very well that they're stupid. It's also good to see someone going trought the same and trying to overcome it(keyword: trying). The fact is that the same value can be found at Bocchi the Rock, but you also get a awesome character growth. In the end this show is a great absurd comedy, but it also brings a lot to the table both in the band plot and in the social anxiety plot.

Hmm, a little bit disappointed they did not go very deep on the music in BTR. IMO it's the most appealing aspect of the show, the attention to detail CloverWorks puts on with the animation when Kessoku Band plays on stage is incredible; where the guitars land their fingers on the frets, Nijika's head-bobbing, Ryo slapping the bass on EP12, the fking bottle in EP5 was clearer than my future ffs. Not to mention the equipments shown in the anime are very much what real-life bands use as well, the lyrics are amazing, and AKFG references etc.. I felt these needed a bit more appreciation.

I think more than anything else what makes Bocchi the Rock successful is the production quality. Part of why it's such a surprise to people when you explain what the anime is, and that a bunch of people think it's the best anime of 2022 and has a super high MAL rating, is that describing it can't really convey why it's that great. It's the animation and the direction and the writing that elevate everything like crazy. The mixed media, the melting, the sudden art shifts, the occasional Looney Tunes moments, the remarkably realistic instrument playing, the almost photorealistic backgrounds that accurately replicate real places that actually exist in the place they're supposed to be in, and even how each character consistently moves in their own way. For people that don't pay attention to the technical aspects, they might be like "how is it this good?" but if you start digging deeper, you have to ask yourself "how did this many talented people all get together and perform at the height of their capabilities?" If someone doesn't like Bocchi, fair. But if they think it's not a really strong production on a technical level, well, that's not a valid opinion.

There are several things I really liked about Bocchi. 1. Bocchi - To be frank, she is such a great character and very relatable. Her freak outs are glorious and hilarious. And yet, she is such a cool character... a lot cooler than she gives herself credit for. Despite her faults, she comes in clutch when she really needs to and picks things up to help her friends. 2. Rock - I mean come on, I love rock (favorite genre) and I really wish there was more music and idol anime that went this route with rock music instead of pop or overly cutesy stuff (though I do enjoy that too, just it's too common and overly done). 3. Animation and Art - They did a very good job with the animation and the accuracy of it all. Then instruments looked great. The performances amazing. It's rare that you see a music anime with actually good animation during performances. 4. Soundtrack and music during performances is really good. (though I do wish there was more of it) 5. The other characters are actually interesting. It's not just Bocchi that is fun to watch, all of them are really fun to watch and see how they interact with one another. This was an anime I seriously did not go into thinking I was going to come out of it loving it as much as I did.

I feel like I would like K-On in theory, but I've only seen a couple of episodes of it and haven't felt compelled to watch more. I couldn't wait to watch more of Bocchi the Rock as it was airing. I think the fact that the band aspect was something that the characters were actually focused on and not just a thing they did sometimes kept my interest. That and hanging out in a real music venue and not a school club room most of the time gave it more of a 'real' feeling also.

  • @metalcobra726

I understand what you are saying but I didn’t feel it as much as you did. I still think k-on is a better show but bocchi the rock does put a little bit more emphasis on the music/rock lifestyle. I didn’t fully enjoy k-on until I finished season 1. K-on takes awhile to get you interested and wanting to watch more but when it does it’s great. I didn’t really start wanting to watch I the show until I think ep 5. The show is more about friendship and life than music and it does it amazingly well. The characters are better written imo, while the jokes maybe not as good at times are funny to me and it’s smart humor as jokes can last episodes or cause new jokes where as in bocchi they kinda do the same but some episodes it’s kinda boring where others make me laugh my ass off such as episode 4. Bocchi the rock is a great show but I don’t think it’s near as good as people say. It’s has its moments, mainly 3 great episodes but like k-on season one is held back in areas and feels off at points, as in bocchi the rock they don’t feel like a natural real friend group where as k-on they do but bocchi makes for a more compelling mc. I think you should try to give k-on another try and at least finish season 1 then see if you want to continue. Overall what I’m trying to say is each have there strengths and weaknesses and you should watch both.

@@WiqidBritt I disagree, it makes sense in k-on that they would be hanging out as they are in school, they are friends and in the same club. In bocchi it is understandable but it barely makes a difference and makes for less interesting dynamics and friendships between the main cast as the only time they truly spend is in starry. All the characters besides bocchi are static and are only used as foils to help bocchi by saying or doing something to push her further and even then bocchi has little development. I will say I like the more mature approach to the “cute girls do cute things” genre but it doesn’t make it the best one because of that.

People who view diffirent personalities as cringe is kind of why we need better education on that side. Hitori, Ryo, Kita and Nijika are a perfect representation of melancholics, phlygmatics, sangvinics and holerics, each distinct temperament having their "shining time" in the anime, like how Hitori as a melancholic has injustice as its mortal enemy which results in her sick "That band" intro as well as all the analyzing and caused by it daydreaming, or how Nijika as holeric has a certain goal in life and won't back down untill it is achieved. And of course, two are introverts, two are extraverts. And as long as humanity lived the two camps were at war with eachother for not understanding one another. Although it's simple. Of course, there's personal ins and outs to all of us, so the example can be false for some, but most of the time it's like this: Introverts do things good when they're alone, but doing that same thing infront of friends (audience) drops that effectivness of doing the thing, while for extraverts it's the opposite, they'll be struggling alone but as long as there's someone with them they'll thrive. In Bocchi that's represented with how Hitori is a self-taught, being introvert and all, and then teaches Kita, who was really struggling to learn it on her own, but with Hitori and others teaching her she quickly got to a decent level of play. Not to say it's impossible for extraverts to be self-taught, but there's a certain struggle unlike for introverts and vice versa. Really important note: introverts and extraverts are all affected by lonelyness, there's no "introverts are better off completely alone" or "extraverts are to be always around people", there's enough times when i'd get ignored and not interacted with just because i'm an introvert and they thought "you're better off without us trying to pull you into something" which is really common thing to happen and i hope i at least shed some light on this for thoes unaware. But i wouldn't need to let people know this if out education was better, i got to know this better only in college, when that really affects us during puberty, and some people don't end up going to college, so they're left unaware for the rest of their lives, making false statements just because they didn't get to understand that when they were growing up.

In most other shows it feels like the writer doesn't understand what it's actually like and writes something like "haha they can't talk right -please laugh" or something which is borderline insulting. So in short Bocchi is a main character that I can actually relate to instead of some caricature that's supposed to be relatable.

The biggest difference is probably that there is an attempt to gain sympathy for the character using their developmental troubles as a vector for the viewer to reach their true inner goodness. in Watamote, her developmental troubles are mostly a symptom of her poor inner character, and if you continue the manga, almost the entire cast has really terribly personalities except like 2 ppl. In the others, you cheer for the character, in Watamote, you're there for the train wreck.

K-On is moe school club anime with a band theme Bocchi is a band anime with highschool girls You are right with that they are different. They only intersect with the "cute girls" and "band" aspects but they're really different at their core. K-On has been the iconic "cute girls in a rock band" anime for years, with fans existing til this day, so it recieved the flak when another "rock band with cute girls" reaches mainstream and seemingly dethrones it's spot. Accept that they're different things and they can co-exist at the top.

Bocchi is somewhat realistic to me, the character I mean. If put under a serious undertone, Bocchi should probably be prescribed anxiety meds…

Definitely not! I think these types of drugs (I wouldn't even call them "meds") don't fix anything, they just suppress a fixable problem.

Bocchi was such a charming show, watched it cause I kept seeing it mentioned online and I was pleasantly surprised. The way they changed the animation for the cringe Bocchi moments was genius and hilarious, personal favourite was when she t-posed and flew into a cube

I also look so fucking shit in pics. IRL, I look great (might sound conceited, but let's call it confidence). In pictures I look like I've got several extra chromosomes.

I literally just finished watching it. Loved it. Also loved Watamote when I watched it the first time, but when I tried watching it again, I just couldn't.
