I saw Bobby at Fiddler's Grove once not expecting to, I was walking by a group of folks sitting and talking on my way to an event near by when I noticed him I froze in my tracks an hunkered down on one knee just to listen to him talk about the youth talent that was competing there. Next to him sat Jay Unger, I never spoke, I was just captivated by him. He is an icon to all Fiddler's and a joy just to hear his stories.

King of the double stops. Bobby can make a fiddle sing or cry. One of the best.

I've seen that fiddle twice in person. First time was when Bobby was touring with Ricky Skaggs and they did a show in Tucson, Arizona around 1982. During intermission I approached Bobby at the front of the stage and chatted briefly but I asked him what kind of fiddle he was playing. He handed it to me, and of course, it was the same one in this video but he had taped scotch tape across both f-holes and had an electric pickup on it. The tape was to cut down on feedback because of the pretty high volume the whole band was playing at. The second time was when Bobby came into the violin shop in St. Louis where I worked. He was in the area because I think he and his wife were visiting his wife's relatives up in Granite City, Illinois. He'd brought along his fiddle (same as this one in video) and we talked fiddles, had him play a bunch of expensive fiddles, and we even jammed on several tunes, including Maiden's Prayer, and a couple of Monroe tunes. I kid you not, Bobby's fiddle kicked the ass of everything we handed him, even fiddles in the 10-20 grand range. There was not a single fiddle we handed him that even came close to the incredible, dark, complex tone that that Jesus-Head fiddle had. He told us that the fiddle was made by a guy who was mostly a custom gun-stock maker. Bobby is a very fine feller, and an American treasure.

0:47 Because one of the Fiddlers passed away, Mr Hicks decided to add a 5th String to his Fiddle so he can play those 2 parts together, & that 5th String is a Low C String just like the Viola.

For what I like in fiddle playing, Bobby is the best! He just has this special gift and you might say his playing is anointed just like his fiddle...Hope the Lord blesses me with a fiddle like that some day...And if He doesn't, I'm still blessed...

Bobby Hicks could've done Diana Krall's version of Jingle Bells on the 5 String Fiddle to draw attention to those who wanna start fiddling, I hope one day maybe he will.

In the interview his clip-on mic is picking up his voice along with every tiny little thing his hands are doing while handling that fiddle. It’s bursting with sound even when it’s not being played!

@UCnu7tPzXg7d3-ZAQEuYvwAA Bobby Hicks added a 5th String to his fiddle so he could play the Harmony parts below the Melody because one of the Fiddlers that played one of the Harmony parts passed away.

@UCnu7tPzXg7d3-ZAQEuYvwAA I'd love to get this instrument:shop.glasserbows.com/product-p/cccaeo-44-5s.htm so I can play Bobby Hicks's Music on the Cello. It's Glasser Carbon Composite Acoustic-Electric 4/4 Size 5 String Cello Outfit (in Champagne Color) because it's very shiny & does produce a Special Sound. Carbon Fiber Bows (with Synthetic Bow hair) & Carbon Composite instruments do actually work great & they should have Carbon Composite Acoustic-Electric Upright Basses, Larsen should make Double Bass Strings (E, A, D, G fourths tuning plus Low B for the 5 String Models, as well as a 5ths Tuning Set C, G, D, A plus High E for the 5 String Models). Every instrument should come with a case in order to protect it.

I got to the end of it, and it was so pretentious I almost screamed. Seriously? God, if He is real, has better things to do than grace a musical instrument and make it 'the best.' Nowhere else will you find that kind of cheap arrogance disguised as pseudo-spiritualism except the South! Also, misquotation of the Isaiah passage, the Hebrew does not blatantly say 'Christ was ugly,' it is more specific than that, "nothing in his appearance that we should desire Him." The take-away isn't that Jesus was an ugly cretin, but someone who was average, nothing special about his visage to make Him seem like God. It was who He was and how He acted that confirmed His divinity.

Wow... what an asshole. Hicks was joking about "...that's why it sounds so good". Sane people know Bobby Hicks is The Reason it sounds so good. So anyway, what are your music creds??

@@mandoist Some joke, and interesting you have to explain it off that way. What are my music creds? 18 years picking banjo in various groups, Teakbridge101 is my music channel...if you even bother going to look. And really, Hicks' music career is a poor defense for this kind of commentary. There are atheists with more respect than him, and they're not covering their rear with talk of Jesus. "He's a famous picker, who are you" is an old trick to dismiss valid arguments.
