I fully understand your Christmas Eve story, for you see, I too am a retired State Trooper, North Carolina, and experienced the unfortunate responsibility of delivering "death" messages. This responsibility never came easy. I recall meeting an out of state father of a deceased young Marine & taking him to kneel at the very spot on the shoulder of the highway where his son took his last breath. Yes, this never comes easy, but it does come with serving as a State Trooper.

I lost two wonderful sons to a drunk driver years ago. I still vividly remember the knock on the door and the compassion of the police officer. I actually felt sorry for him knowing the devastating message he had to deliver. I was alone and I know I just sat there and went into shock. He stayed with me until my wife and daughter returned from shopping. My heart goes out to anyone who has to deliver such messages.

No words can discribe how touching this is. This is what Christmas is really about. Caring for your fellow man. I almost lost my husband this Christmas. He was in a car accident on the 22nd. By grace of God, all that happened was he got mild whiplash, the car was totaled. A car can be replaced, but not a loved one.

I lost my wife just over eight years ago now, and I still remember the wonderful Indiana State Trooper who was there to help me when my truck had broken down on the interstate the day before I was to bury my wife, who had just died from cancer. He not only helped me, but he prayed for me and my family at that incredibly dark time. I haven't forgotten, and neither has my family, nor will we ever.
