My dad loved Bob Seger and I heard it tons growing up. As he was dying from lung cancer, I played this for him one day as I was shaving him. He perked up and really loved it. I will never forget that moment. Music is powerful. Miss you dad. 💔

Hey Alice, I have Craigs autograph on a sheet piece (keyboard dude) , the song is lock and load, iam trying to get a friend to have Bob and Drew sign it, there is another person on the writing credit that I don't know. My uncle passed away in 2022. He was 83, never married had no kids but had his share and then some of lady friends and been proposed to but never wanted to totally commit to one person. I totally respected him for that. His longtime female friend helped me plan his funeral and told me when they were together his fav song was Like a Rock. I had that song played at his funeral. He liked Bob Segar a lot but back in the day wasn’t really my cup of tea. Been playing that song a lot lately then this one came on and I can’t stop crying as Roll Me Away was my uncle in a nutshell!! He always had a great job, plenty of money and on weekends he didn’t care if he went E or W he’d jump on his Harley and take off. I adore Segar just wished I had before now. What a passionate down to earth American man’s man, just like my uncle was. 😢Thank you for posting this video!

Seen most all of the biggest bands over the years......and heard countless tunes.....as all of the rest of you reading this have too, I know. I swear to the Good Lord that this may be the best song lyrics ever written. It hits SO MANY OF US RIGHT IN THE GUT.....men or women both. And Bob doing these live just belts these tunes of his out with no frills and some of the baddest mofo musicians ever to back a rock star. Yes! I’ve seen Bob in concert 3 times. The 70’s , 80’s and 2019. He still kills it ,Voice is as strong as ever !! He rejuvenates me , if I’m having a bad day, earphones on , blarin Bob. His music still has the power to soothe the savage breast. Love Bob !

Bob Seger is the REAL rock and roll voice of the working man, not Springsteen.

I grew up listening to Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band on my dad's 8-track tapes. Dad was a Vietnam vet, and I always felt Bob's music said a lot of what my father was feeling, but never could express. Even so, he was a good man and raised a good family, despite his faults and sufferings. The last lines of this song, especially, I think say what he, and now I, feel....despite our best efforts, we wish we could have done better. I think it's an appropriate epitaph......"And as the sunset faded, I spoke to the faintest, first starlight....and I said next time....next time.......we'll get it right!"

I am 61 and have been listening to Bob Seger since I was a teenager. His voice rolls me away every time!!!!

If there was ever a rocker who could legitimately be called a bard, Bob Seger is it....such stories wrapped around such music....

Back in the 80’s, there was a movie called Reckless with Aiden Quinn and Daryl Hannah…at the end, he tells her he’s leaving on his bike and asks her to go with him. She pgets on the bike and as they ride away, this song plays as the credits roll. It was the first time I heard it. As a young man in my 20’s, it stirred some emotions, but they passed. I’ve heard it on occasion since then, and I crank up the volume when it plays. 3 years ago, I bought my first bike, a Harley Davidson. I hear the song now, and it’s like an anthem. Tells of a life worth living. Stirring stuff. I’ll be 60 next year, Bob Seger’s songs always take me back to my late teens. The soundtrack to a generation.

Hi John of all the songs that Bob seger ever sang I had never heard this one until around 2000, now figure I was riding bikes back in the 70s got married and divorced by mid 80s nback to bikes again and then thats when those Sony cassette players small ones turned up, I would make up a mix tape mostly stuff ti cruise or ride hard to and I would have the earphones in the helmet and off I would go I rode miles and miles listening to Bob,s music but never this one, also heard No Mans land another not known to me. Back when I would be off riding i would wear my leather trousers and smart bomber jacket, one stop some ladies wolf whistled me, now that gave me such a boost to my life, as after a marriage break up was what was needed, got my confidence back with people and ladies, yes Bob Seger thankyou for some of the most fab music ever

Absolutely John! I've owned bikes since '73 and love riding. I now own a Harley Road King and can't stay off of it. This song was great then and even more powerful to me now. "I took a bead on the northern plains and turned that power on" is a powerful line and gets me ready to ride. The song haunts me. I hear it when I'm riding and think of it when I'm not. I rode from Florida through the Carolinas, to Iowa, then to Wisconsin and them Michigan. Two weeks , 4700 miles. What a ride!

Nope! U will never guess in 100 years. Piano player on Roll Me Away is Roy Bittan of the E Street Band. I met Roy on the Born In The USA Tour 1985 in Coumbia, SC and he was surprised that I knew that. Seger asked him if he would play on that song. Roy Bittan is great piano player for Bruce and the E Street Band for last 50+ years. Bruce calls Roy the professor for a reason.

NO ONE has a voice like Bob Seger. He is one of my very favorite singers (& band). They take me back to my early days...70 years now and I'm still running against the wind... 😁

I am NOT falling for that reply whoever you are. I doubt Mr. Seger would send me this type of reply. I am 70 and thankfully my husband and two boys and two grandchildren work in IT and they are always giving me advice. "Don't reply to someone you know probably is not who they say they are"! Sorry...having a crabby day...must listen to "Like a Rock"....

Michigan born and raised. At 65 this song resonates with so much of my life. Nothing compares to the heart and soul of Seger. He brings me back to a life that made sense, kind of. lol...

@gregnormal0 Yes, I have always enjoyed Seger's music and I met him at a concert at Pine Nob, in Michigan, through a friend that worked for him. Seger is very low key compared to his stage presence. There is no fakeness in his shows. :)

@BobSeger. As long as I can remember. lol...My Mom was a fan as well. Lots of fond memories attached to your music. I graduated in 1976 and this music was a big part of my HS years. It still is. :)

This is my #1 most favorite song ever. As a detroit kid, now adult. This song is it. Everytime he gets to " next time ill do it right" i still tear up. Probably the most underrated singer song writer, puts on a show in blue jeans and tigers shirt. Best band. No lasers or dancers, or other crap. Just a working class guy, his band and a stage. Truly an american classic and proud detroiter.

Truth. There’s only one Bob Seger.

This song is like a deep earthquake - you don't see it impacting you but then .. whoa ! Masterpiece Why are there no songs like this anymore?

61 Years old and Bob is still my favorite entertainer. Growing up, I was an avid model kit builder and while building cars and boats, military models, and the like, I listened to Bob on my Mom's old roll top desk radio she had in college. Bob is and will always be my favorite entertainer. NO ONE can match this talented person.

Bob, we will never be tired of your own voice! Thank you for writing songs that still stir our souls.

My Brother passed this week from ALS. A long 3-year ordeal. This song will keep me going. It was our favorite.

Hello steve. I was born and raised in Alabama. But I will tell you this. Mister Bob Seger is one of my top 3 of all time. I don't think I've heard anything better than " Live Bullet" And this comes from a hardcore Lynyrd Skynyrd fan

The best damn song ever written, PERIOD!!! Every young man in the late 70's had a vision of getting on their bike and riding to see where the road takes them and the adventures that might follow. Rock on Mr Seger, Rock on!!

That is the hallmark of a great song. No matter how many times you hear it, you do not tire of it.

Am now retired and can clearly relate with this song, have been riding since the mid 60's and know the freedom of swinging a leg over and DTH. My ex had just flew the coop while stationed in Rota Spain and took every dime and left the bills. Buddy and his wife took a couple of days off and took my son to Tormolinis and took the BMW R69 at the end of the week to meet them in "T" town. Took the back way, vice the coast road, and this came up on my walkman in a rather outstanding part of the road, and things just made sense. About a decade later retired from Navy and stumbled into a real queen of my heart. We still ride, this song has special meaning to me.

One of the best songs ever made.

I am sorry it took me so long to finally appreciate Bob Seger. What a talent!

There was a movie released in 1985 called "Mask" with Cher & Eric Stoltz when I worked at a movie theatre. As the ending credits rolled, this song played...that's when I listened to it really closely...time and time again, and started a life long appreciation Bob Seger.

I'm a long time ,big fan and follower of Bob & The Silver Bullet Band,. * Very sad to hear Alto Reed had past. ( At 64 i made 11 live shows ,From early 70,s ~when Bob & the S.B.B were opening for B,T,O, Iowa JAM, Madison, Wisconsin ,Chicago IL ,TO SAN DEIGO and Texas, ( Bob put on ALL~ GREAT live shows ).GOOD TIMES . !!! * B ,GRAHAM * ,

This has got to be the best song he's ever written. He bears his soul and you feel every bit deep into the depths of yours. A master at his craft. I grew up in Michigan, seeing him play every summer. Such wonderful memories. Thank you for them all.

For me, Bob Seger's music brings out the best memories that I ever had. I can still remember biking around a lake when I was fourteen, the chorus of this song ringing through my head. When I came to a viewpoint I got off my bike, took off my sunglasses, and watched the silhouette of a hawk fly in front of the bright sun on that clear day. Though it was summer, the mountaintops did not lack snow. Unlike today, everything used to be so simple. The skies were bluer, the sun was brighter, and times were better. Listening to Bob Seger brings back memories of these times. I hope that for all who read this commentary: remember the simple times. In the words of a genius: Next time we'll get it right.

The times were never simple, Adam. Oh, they were simpler for me when I was 14 as well, but for almost all of the adult population, the times were plenty complicated. Always. Nonetheless, I too love this song, as it brings out the grateful joy I've felt when driving coast-to-coast in this great, beautiful land.

I tear up every time I listen to this song, especially the last verse "Stood alone on a mountain top staring out at the great divide...". This song never fails to lift my spirits and encourage me to keep following my own path, march to my own drum in life.

Happily, yet somewhat sadly, I did not find Bob Seger until after he retired. Once I realized his collection, I immediately searched him on Livenation and then his personal website. That's when I discovered he has officially retired. I have watched literally every single YT video I can find, downloaded every album and now my kids know almost every word to this this Legends writing. SO SO SO hard to say my top song, they ALL speak to my soul, but Against The Wind; that did something to me, "Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then". This man is a lyrical genius!! and should be protected at all costs

When I get depressed I can always play Bob Segar songs like Fire Lake. Am 77 now and still love his songs

I am 63 but I wish I could do this.

BOB SEGER AND THE SILVER BULLET BAND, ONE OF THE BEST BANDS EVER, VOCALS, LYRICS, AND INSTRUMENTALS, BROUGHT IT ALL TOGETHER TO MAKE SOME OF THE GREATEST ROCK SONGS EVER. THIS BAND PLAYED UNTIL BOB COULDN'T SING, THEY WERE ALWAYS POPULAR AND ALWAYS HAD ANOTHER HIT COMIN'

Craig Frost is a really excellent keyboardist! During live performances, Craig Frost would play the piano, while sax player, Alto Reed would play the organ, as can be seen in this video, along with the remaining musicians assuming their conventional roles - Chris Campbell on bass, Dawayne Bailey and Mark Chatfield on guitar, and Don Brewer on drums. Interesting tidbit of info is that keyboard player Craig Frost and drummer Don Brewer were previously from Grand Funk Railroad, while lead guitarist Dawayne Bailey later became a member of Chicago.

Bob Seger will fire you up and never Let you down . You will never forget it.

Saw Bob and the Silver Bullet band live in the old Summit arena (now a megachurch) in Houston in 1983. Featured Grand Funk Railroad drummer Don Brewer. This song (with Brewer’s booming drum sound) blew the roof off.
