The instrumentation on this recording was by the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, The Silver Bullet Band was mostly a touring band. Bob would write songs, go down to Alabama to record an album and then go out on the road with his band. This is a very good Bob Seger song, probably just outside my top10. Check out Black Knight from the same album.

Bob wrote and recorded this in 1975 after gigging almost 300 nights per year out of beat up station wagons and vans - He had a huge regional fan base, but hadn't made a breakthrough to national airplay - That's why he included the lyrics "if I ever get outta here...." and "no one here loves me anyway..." - He made it big in '76 with his album Live Bullet followed closely by Night Moves, then Stranger in Town - He did go to Kathmandu as a spokesman for Special Olympics in 1991 kzread.info/dash/bejne/a6iuvNCOiamyerA.html

Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal. If you've ever seen Eddie Murphy's movie The Golden Child, that's where they went to get the sacred knife. "I - I - I want the knife". I rate this song as Bob Seger good. It is the same rating I give all of his songs!

The great Bob Seger. I've mentioned previously that I saw him before he was a big star, opening for Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band in NYC '74, the theater half-filled when Bob did his great set. I'd love to hear "Rosalie".

  • @stevedahlberg8680

Think it's open for interpretation but I first encountered this when I was in high school and I bought several of his albums and like a lot of his stuff and it was on the radio all the time. But whenever I Revisited when I get older, it always resonates with me even more, especially the serious stuff. But Katmandu is actually a real place, and it's way up in the mountains in Asia and there is a certain Mystique to it. But here's where the interpretations may vary but I've always just seen it as a working-class song, this is one of those songs that you would love to dance to in a bar to them playing it live. But on the other hand, it was on every jukebox and every bar for so long or not for so long like some of his other stuff but for awhile. He's got a couple equivalent simple bangers like that like, Betty Lou's going out tonight. And of course take those old records off the shelf and play that rock-and-roll song which got so overplayed. I think he knows he's never going to make it over to catmandoo because that would cost tens of thousands of dollars to really go into it in the end and stay for awhile. But he just means that in his mind he wants to let loose and just go someplace way different than everyday life. It's a perfect song for a Friday night

I like this song but it does not make my top 10 of Bob Seeger songs. To me it is a basic rock song that on my first listen way back then, I discounted a bit as being a mix of Rock and Roll Music (Beach Boys) and California Girls (Beach Boys), musically and lyrically. Sunspot Baby was way better imo. Pure hard driving Bob Seger, totally original. Her Strut and Fire Down Below rank up there too. Kathmandu is one of those romantic sounding faraway places where poppies grow. Marrakech Express and Shambala etc.are songs in the same vein, Lyrically, Something Fine by Jackson Browne might be the best one of these songs although it is not a rocker.
