As entertaining as it was to watch him paint, I believe that enormous damage was done to the public and countless aspiring artists by being imbued with this huckster style of flashy shortcuts.

Tell that to Jackson Pollock. Dude couldn’t even paint and people ate that crap up. At least Bob Ross had some skill.

@@Down_the_Wind Pollock had whole bodies of work which were fantastic and with world-class talent, but these paintings and drawings are seldom seen. I do not particularly like the giant drip paintings that break auction records. Those who question Pollock's abilities should do more study of his work. Anyway, Pollock earned his stature, but Ross is such a cartoon character that he has no stature.

Pollock would have been a nobody if it weren’t for that shady Clement Greenberg constantly making such a big deal over how much of a genius Pollock was, using his connections as an art critic to increase his exposure. Greenberg was only promoting Pollock for his own financial gain. Greenberg was basically his pimp. Pollock was an alcoholic hack who could barely take care of himself without Clement or his wife holding his hand. Even if you dont like Bob Ross, he at least got more people interested in art and made it accessible to regular folk instead of making it some kind of upper crust, rich folk hobby.

@@Down_the_Wind I'm well aware of the impact of Greenberg on Pollock's notoriety. As for being an alcoholic, to me that is a plus, if anything, if we should also consider that Maurice Utrillo was too, and I am a huge fan of Utrillo. Anyway, as I said, Pollock has done other paintings belonging in the company of other great artists such as deKooning who was probably the best of them all. Honestly, Ross does not belong in any discussion of good artists.
