I was listening to The Last Word podcast and was so very moved when he played this heartfelt rendition from an American Senator who as a Navy Seal won the Medal of Honour in Vietnam, and lost the lower part of a leg...making this song all the more poignant. Every Australian knows this song (along with Redgum's 'I was Only 19' about Vietnam). I freely admit this this made me weep.

Wow. As an Aussie myself, I never expected to see an American senator perform this song with such passion. I love how the crowd go silent as he sings. People have already mentioned he gets some words wrong, but I just wanted to say the song isn't "from some 70 years ago". It was written in the early seventies and was inspired by the ANZAC day marches. Other great Australian war songs; "I was only 19" and "khe sanh". Do yourself a favor and look them up on YT.

Shown by Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC tonight upon Gov. Kerrey's announcement for the Senate. As moving now as in 1988. There is hope for the U.S. Congress as long as men like this seek office.

How great was Kerry! .. Today, we have men like Trump, soulless and indifferent. Not a shred of empathy or humanity found in the White House. How I long for the days when America was truly great

I saw this in Lawrence tonight. I have always loved this song and never knew Kerrey sung it. It was a great surprise, and a moving one. Very moving, coming from a Vietnam vet who also lost use of his leg, in a war where patriotic young men went off to fight "for their country" and came back to indifference and even hatred.

Sometimes all you need is just enough seconds of insane, embarrassing, bravery-and something great comes of it. Both JFK & RFK would recite Shakespeare off the top of their head in regular political speeches. They would call us to rise to higher standards of expectation...of ourselves. That era was shot dead.

One of the most moving things I ever read was the account of his waking up from surgery after having his foot amputated. His mother was there when he woke and he looked at her and asked, "How much did they leave?" WITHOUT EVER TAKING HER EYES OFF OF HIS, she said, "They left a lot."

You’ve grown up a fair bit in the last six years, you’re a Marine, you’re married now to a beautiful woman, you’ve got a kick arse mustache, and good mates. But you’ve still got a lot of growing up to do. I’ll be back in another six years to tell you how you’re coming along, but chin up mate, you’ve got a bright future ahead of you.
