BOB HOPE & BING CROSBY REUNION at Eisenhower Medical Center benefit performance 1970 w JOHNNY CARSON
Ойын-сауық
Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, introduced by Johnny Carson, perform a medley of each other’s hits and duet on “Put it There, Pal” from “Road to Utopia”.
Some comments below refer to my original description, in which I stated I had no idea what this was clip was from, only that it was a hospital benefit, probably from mid to late circa 1970 (based on Carson's joke about David Eisenhower and the naval reserve). Thanks to viewer Jack Daugherty for enlightening me (I wasn't far off!):
"This was a portion of a "Bob Hope Show" broadcast on February 16, 1970 on NBC. It was a fundraiser held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NYC, to raise funds for the construction of the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage CA. Other performers included Ray Bolger (singing "Once in Love with Mamie" for Mamie Eisenhower, who was in attendance), Raquel Welch, Johnny Cash and the West Point Choir. More than 2 million dollars was raised during the evening and the main hospital opened in November, 1971. Bob and Delores Hope donated the original 80 acres that the hospital was built on and were fundraisers for the hospital for over 30 years."
By the way, Carson mentions that the price to dine that night was $1,000 a plate. In May 2023 dollars, that's $7,818.63.

they were corny, even Carson didn't care for Hope because he brought nothing as a guest.

ALL CIVILITY HAS BEEN LOST .. IT WILL BE SOME LONG LONG TIME BEFORE WE SEE REAL ENTERTAINMENT !!!
I'm 62 years old, and these two are the Greatest pair of Entertainers in and before my lifetime. I am so proud that my parents used to watch them and shared their unique blend of comedy with me in my youth. CLEAN FAMILY COMEDY, the likes that we, unfortunately, will never see again. Gather the family, sit back and enjoy the best of the BEST. 💝 They were indeed, a special gift.

Yes, I'm just slightly younger and also have my parents to thank for a love of film, due to their recommendations, musicals and comedies from my mother and great drama from dad. Thanks to their huge box of 78 rpm discs I also received an excellent musical education, just as eclectic (from "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" to "How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Loved You, When You Know I've Been a Liar All My Life?"!). Put on a Road movie marathon and thank them again!

When Hollywood had true entertainers. What a team.
Carson - a class act introducing a class act.
The road pictures were some of the best movies ever made.
David and Julie Eisenhower are still married (1968); that warms my old lady heart 👵

Giants! Absolute Giants! It just doesn't get any better.
Two of Hollywood's greats with so much history between the two of them. So much class and their timing is spot on. Watch and learn.
The great ones are all gone now.
Two of the best entertainers of all time......
Two of the absolute best in Show Biz
Two of the greatest entertainers to ever grace the screen, wouldn't it have been nice to have had Dorothy join them on stage, that would have been epic.
Absolute class. God bless Bing and Bob.
Just unbelievable talent and it must have been amazing privilege to be in the audience.
Today's millennials are missing these classic actors; hopefully KZread will keep them alive.
A generation before me, but such talent and class. Something you certainly don't see today. Sad!
Bing looks and sounds great here. Hard to believe he would pass just seven years later.
Two legends
Lovely that they could look fondly back at their past yet pay homage to the present with contemporary references to John Lennon, Goldie Hawn/Laugh In and Tiny Tim. Class act.
They were planning on making the Road To The Fountain Of Youth when Bing died in Spain. This is the closest we'll ever get to knowing how that might have looked.

Entertainment of a caliber not seen in these frivolous days. They were never perfect yet they never failed to bring a smile and a moment of escape to this audience. Talent was their incredible gift yet they shared it like it never belonged to them to begin with. This era of entertainment has left us yet their memories will keep us entertained for life.

A truly class act!
Yep.....insouciant charisma like theirs comes from relentless practice ,experience and above all sheer talent.
Every now and then lock me in a room with reruns....
Few had the sizzling, jaw dropping brand of magic these two had. Back when talent was actually a prerequisite in the Golden Age of Entertainment. God Bless Them Both...RIP Bing and Bob. You're deeply missed but still bring smiles and laughter to this day and you still shine bright like the stars you truly are from up above 🌟
Grew up watching these two and now 70 years later still watching their movies etc. Timeless.
What an amazing team. I wish I was around at the time.to.experience them in real time. I loved how every outside of the Road To movies they would appear in each other's acts and films. Their relationship on screen and over the radio either together or poking fun at each other in absentia was fantastic

I think I must've been 10 when I saw my first Road movie. My first 4 in fact. They were on a midnight to dawn movie marathon on TV. I woke the family laughing so much and this was Australia in the 70's, not USA in the 40's so most of the jokes went over my head, but I got enough to add a love of the surreal to my psyche. I'd like to say Hope and Crosby were the pioneers, but 20 years earlier (now 100 years ago!) Buster walked into a movie screen. The Pythons were lauded for their surreal comedy (and I love them) but they were just being naughtier Bings and Bobs. It's so cool how meta they were, before meta was a thing. I showed Road to Morocco to a friend recently who'd never seen either in a film, let alone together. He was loving it, but when the camels started talking, he looked at me with amazement and said "this is so NOW!"

Thanks to modern technology, you can enjoy the entertainers of long ago. I suggest you check out the seven "road" movies they made together. "Road to Singapore", "Road to Zanzibar", "Road to Morocco", "Road to Utopia", "Road to Rio", "Road to Bali" and "Road to Hong Kong". The first was a basic "buddy comedy"/"love triangle" which several stars turned down before someone at Paramount hit on the brilliant idea of teaming Crosby and Hope, both under contract and acquaintances (they were never great friends, didn't socialise) who had enjoyed working together in a few stage appearances. The film was a big hit and started the series, which lasted 22 years. If you watch the films in the order they were made, you can see the formula develop, the running gags (especially "patty cake") and the proliferation of "in-jokes". These guys were meta before that was even a thing, making jokes about each others' films, for instance. "Morocco" and "Utopia" are very surreal (talking camels, talking fish) and those two are my favourites. "Hong Kong" wasn't made by Paramount (Hope and Crosby produced) and is the weakest of the series, but worth watching. At the time of Crosby's death in 1977, they were planning another "Road" film, "Road to the Fountain of Youth". I used to think maybe it's good that it wasn't made, as it may have spoiled the legacy, but seeing them here, maybe I'm wrong.
Well said, Prince Harming. These days, nearly everything has been reduced to the lowest common denominator. Stars like Hope and Crosby were fabulous, unique and so entertaining.
This is entertainment that just does not exist today. What a wonderful way to see these two long-time performers again together creating magic on the stage. What a great treat!

@@BabyFaceBrenMaybe not. Hope and Crosby were notorious for going off script in the Road movies.
@BabyFaceBren

@@Heres_Johnny. When that happened, their “ad-libs” were usually written. Hope and Crosby both had their own writers, employed for their respective radio shows. When Bob and Bing received their script for each Road movie, they would each hand the script over to their writers, to come up with “ad-libs” to use to throw off the other and add a touch of “spontanaeity” but they would’ve each rehearsed their lines till they had them down pat. That’s not to say they NEVER ad-libbed (in “Road to Morocco”, a camel spits in Hope’s eye and Bing says ‘good girl’, that was an ad-lib) but they weren’t writers (even Hope’s many books were ghost-written) just great actors who could make written “ad-libs” appear thought-up on the spot.

Read about what his other three sons were quoted about saying defending their father after the books release. I'm not saying they weren't spanked because they were, it is just Gary reinterviewed stated he couldn't remember writing some of the things as he had been drunk at the time. As Gary wrote the book and then admitted this and apologised to the family and was working on a tribute album to his father shortly before his passing, you have to wonder about the reasons behind him writing it. A close family member in an interview mentioned that there were two drafts submitted. Mary, his stepsister, clarifies the reasons why the book was spiced up, as she and Gary spoke about it. Have you also read Linnys complete defence of his father's saying he had let his boys down, in a story from years ago and Linnys ex-wife saying Bing had been a very good father to Linny. This is the son that first suicided. Bing and Dixie were both disciplinarians but they loved there boys.
