What a cool avant-garde film. David Bromberg is one hell of an actor, holding that crazy pose perfectly still for 12 minutes!

This is absolutely one of the best Bootleg series they've done. Incredible front to back and makes clear that "Self Portrait" is greater than everyone thought, and "New Morning" is a better classic than we realized. Brilliant, naturally.

I love Another Self Portrait. Inspired me to make my own edited cut of New Morning using some of the outtakes and unreleased songs from ASP. Called it "Newer Morning"! It's a shame that the Cutting Edge one that came out last year was such a let down. They really should have included all the unreleased songs on the 2 disc set with the massive limited edition set just being extra outtakes for the puritan collector. It still would have sold. Instead we get almost nothing but alternate takes of songs already on the album, many of which are extremely similar, subpar or just cut off like a verse or two in.

Dylan is an infinitely better singer than he has ever been given credit for. He has been a fearless experimenter who like all the best artistic creators, has never been content to stick with one approach to making music and has worked hard to uncover that which has always been there waiting in the deep glittering recesses of his rich imagination.

What is interesting is that George Harrison was visiting Bob Dylan in NYC when New Morning was being recorded and actually played on a few songs which he is not credited for since Apple has restrictions on George Harrison where and when he can play. If you listen to the album you will be able to pick out George Harrison slide guitar. George Harrison also met Nashville steel pedal virtuoso Pete Drake and asked him to come over to the UK and record on the song "Behind That Locked Door" -- the song George Harrison wrote for Bob Dylan which appears on his first solo album All Things Must Pass in 1971.

ONE of the most amazing things about Dylan--one of the seemingly uncountable discoveries is the number of DIFFERENT VOICES Dylan has at his disposal depending on what he needs for a particular song. Dylan seems to have dozens of voices and none of them are by accident.

And Rough and Rowdy Ways is his vocal pinnacle, I think. It encompasses all the other voices: the husk and bark of his earliest days, the cool cool sounds of Blonde on Blonde, the super-smooth croon of Nashville Skyline, the black growl of when he seemed to have totally lost his voice. . . and just when we thought he had gotten to the very bottom of his bag of tricks. . . something new, a sort of hopeless tenderness. He loves us, you know.
