Lyrics:
There must be some way out of here
Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief
Businessmen, they drink my wine
Plowmen dig my earth
None of them along the line
Know what any of it is worth
No reason to get excited
The thief he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke
But you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now
The hour is getting late
All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
Barefoot servants, too
Outside in the distance
A wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching
The wind began to howl

I think Dylan intensely disliked 'psychedelic' music from '67 onwards, and had little time for the Woodstock festival in '69 - including 'Sgt Pepper'. This sounds like a retrospective view to me.

I think the fact that someone as irreverent and hostile as a young Bob Dylan was actually a fan of Jimi, and that someone as talented and different as Jimi was a huge Dylan fan only goes to show that talent recognises talent. I love both versions of this, both have their place 🎵🎶

Bob Dylan is why I became a lyricist and song writer his story telling is legendary he paints a picture like nobody else
This song is about the mind where the right side looks outward for saviour and watches the reality which it sees losing touch with itself and the other mind was asleep and wakes and now starts it's journey to wake her up and become one again
I love how he says Out in "There must be some way out of here" not only is it so Dylan, but it also sets the mood of the song.

The only living true popular music genius..his depth..range & vision unsurpassed.
This tune was definitely one of the anthems of the 1960s. Gotta love both Dylan's and Hendrix's renditions.

One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written. It makes me feel an indescribable feeling every single time I listen to it. What an utterly brilliant song. ❤
Timeless brilliant lyrics !
Bob and Jimi, two great musicians two great renditions, one great song.
Even if Hendrix cover is more powerful the original is this..Hypnotic and enigmatic as many Dylan's song with a biblical surrealistic text..Amazin..
I wonder what this would sound like with a electric guitar. I bet it would be amazing.
With all due respect to all the great covers of this song (esp. Jimi Hendrix and Neil Young), this is still the greatest version. Ominous and threatening with an acoustic guitar. Genius.

The forest rangers also made a cover for sons of anarchy. All of them great covers, but nothing beats the original.

I think the harmonica in the very beginning, lends a certain urgency to this version.

I agree... JH version is incredible but still has nothing on this original version. It goes beyond music.

It's crazy how many rockers this song inspired, if you think about it, it's the greatest track for a budding guitarist to jam to.
Dylan and Hendrix both have incredible versions of this song, and when asked about Hendrix, Dylan just said "I never knew I wrote an amazing rock song"
The best song ever penned. Period.
So much imagery in the song. It's like a dream. Just amazing songwriting.
Dope lyrics.
Bob was 'blown away' by Jimi Hendrix's rendition of this song. He loved it.
Remember Jimi Hendrix saying this song was kind of written for him, also remember him digging deep in Blonde On Blonde Album. Both artists are geniuses, so we’re glad we lived to hear these great legends, despite Jimi leaving us too early, but he’s still with us, all the time. Wish Bob a long life.

Until today I had never heard the Dylan version. I play a weekly solo gig these days and will add this song. I have been singing many Dylan songs since the 60's. I also missed out on "Make you feel my love" and added it to my rep after I heard the Adele version. Only later did I find out that Dylan wrote it, ha ha. Lucky me, I attended his live show in UK which was the last one with just him and his guitar.
Bob Dylan musician extraordinaire of the iconic realm. I was around during the Dillon era and the Hendricks era. Along the watchtower is lyrically probably won the most prolific in abstract songs ever written. I'm still after all these decades trying to put together the last three stanzas. Outside in the cold distance A wildcat didn't growl Two riders were approaching In the wind began to howl Awesome!
yes, the billboards all read "Stay Home Save Lives" to no one traveling except for Two Riders who were approaching
It has slowly come to my attention that apparently Bob Dylan wrote all the best songs.

That song inspired us to write a raging song about the gun situation in America and the awful events in the university in 2018 (among all the other tragedies). Dylan and Hendrix kind of showed us the way with this great anthem. If you have 3 minutes to spare, I would love your opinion on our song, comments from people with the same taste in music are always best, and stay safe in these crazy times we are in : kzread.info/dash/bejne/nXqsx7hxn9LTY7g.html
this is one of my favourate bob dylan's songs
