Personally I'd want to remove any diesel residue before adding fresh grease. Car brake cleaner is the easiest way and evaporates off. There used to be an excellent paraffin based water soluble degreaser I used called Rockoil SOL, cleaned just like diesel or paraffin but could be completely rinsed off with water. Minimal residue left over. Haven't been able to find it for a few years though.
