It wasn't until we used our winch one day, and it made a horrible sound, that we discovered that it needed to be serviced. I suppose we're not unlike most bluewater cruisers in that we're always learning as we go. Sometimes things break before we learn but other times our egos and pockets are spared.
But before you learn through a very bad noise or a potential breakage, let me tell you that winches need to be serviced every year. And although the insides of a winch can look intimidating, servicing them is actually rather straightforward.
