Boat Restoration Project - "Before..."
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
An upcoming boat restoration / customization project. In this intro video we take a "before" look at an older 14ft Starcraft aluminum v-hull fishing boat that will be the focus of a complete restoration, customization, and conversion project. We go over a few of the issues that will need to be addressed, as well as talk about the preliminary plans for the project.
It has long been a hobby of mine to salvage older boats and give them new life, and a chance at many more years on the water. This little boat is the perfect candidate for one of these makeovers. It is structurally sound (trailer included) and has alot of potential without the need to sink a ton of money into the rebuild. It came with a few extras that will be utilized, but for the most part I will be stripping her down from the ground up. A few of the upcoming tasks will include: Removing the rust from the trailer and applying fresh primer & paint, repacking the bearings, installing a new winch, some minor body work to the hull, a new custom paint job, installing decking with built-in storage and a live-well, routing wiring for electronics (depth finder, lights, stereo, bilge pump, etc), new deck carpeting and seats, and a few other mods to transform her into a fish catching machine.
I hope those of you that are into boating will enjoy this little project. I welcome any suggestions that you may have along the way as well. She will also be needing a name, so if you come up with any cool ideas please feel free to share ;-) Thanks!

Great idea for a set of videos. I love to see old boating restored. I have a 1964 polarcraft and they just don't make them as thick and tough as they use to.
Thanks for the encouragement my friend. I wasn't too sure how well this project would be received, so it is great to hear you're looking forward to it :-) All the best!
I'll definitely be checking that out. Thanks for the heads up Brother!
Thanks Brother. Can't wait to get going on her!
Right on brother... can't wait to see it! Good luck!
Thanks for posting this...I am looking forward to this series!
Thanks David. I definitely have to agree with you... those older boats were built to last for sure! Hope all's well over in your neck of the woods Bro!
Thanks for the info Bro!
I don't know buddy, you did a great job on that pop-up trailer of yours! Thanks for the encouragement Jim!

You're very welcome. Thanks for the support!
YEAH man! This is going to be a blast to watch. I've really been into these project series of videos lately & am excited about this boat project. Film everything : )
Love the ideal of reworking to make it great
I'm interested in seeing more of this project. I just purchased a 12' aluminum boat and trailer for a great price. Same situation, its been sitting in some ones backyard for 20+ years. needs restoration. I know nothing about restoring aluminum boats, but look forward to the project. I think it'll be fun. I can't wait to get it out on the water. I'd like to see more of THIS project and how some things were done. Thanks for this one!
Lookin' forward to it Brother!
very cool John, thx for sharing, cant wait to see ya on the lake!!!! SuperC

This really looks like a fun restore, think I will consider doing one of these in the future. I need a good fishing boat. Can't wait to see this project come together. Thanks for the share. Until next time!

Right on... thanks!
This is a great Therapy, Fixing up the Hobby, getting right into it, and Enjoying your labors..oh yeah..Nice vid !!
That's pretty clever! I could have used that tip yesterday when I took her out for a test run and had wet shoes all day, lol.
I am getting a 15' starcraft alum 1963 tomorrow and will be following yourr post. Thanks in advance.
Good luck ! It's gonna be a great boat !
Thank you for this I just got a project indeed with a
Looks like a nice little project you've got lined up. I love fixing up old stuff (furniture, bicycles, etc). I did a similar boat once, but it was a full wooden hull. Tedious work, but rewarding. I'll be following your progress closely! I'm doing a series of bike restore videos right now, too. Cheers, Z
Sta aft! Awesome. The hull looks great man. Fun project for sure.
Thanks buddy!
Would love to see more around this. I have the same boat mines a 1959.
Thanks Brother! Yeah, it is great seeing these old things brought back to life, isn't it? :-) It's even better when you finally get them out on the water and christen them with a few fish! ;-)
Thanks Bro!
Thanks. Yeah, luckily there's nothing that should pose any kind of major problem... the transom issues are probably the worst of it. Tight lines!
Great Project John! We got something else in common ... I did a restore on a 1955 combo made out with a 1955 7.5 Evenrude and what I was told to be a 1955 12ft flat v hull ( Mostly flat to V Hull) lol. I just got to do the paint and finish the trailer..whoo hoo!!
I am very interested in seeing more of the project.
Right on Brother. I'm on it! :-)
Can't wait to watch the progress....
I like the idea!
Thanks my friend! Congrats on your 1st boat by the way! You gotta let me know how well you like it once you get the chance to get her out on the water :-) All the best!
Very cool project.
I couldn't agree more my friend!
Part 2 is where someone buys it from John and puts it in their backyard for a couple of years.

Yeah, it should be a fun project! It's cool that you redid a wooden hull... I love those boats man! I've always wanted to work on one, but have never came across the right one yet. Someday.... Peace Bro...
Thanks Brother. It should keep me out of trouble for awhile, lol.
Really cool project, that has good potential with some fabricating, replacing and as always some TLC. Good luck with your new project and I will be following all the way. Take care my friend and have a great day.
sure would like to see how it turned out
Cool project. Does not look like to many headaches. Keep the keel down. And Drink to the foam
Looking forward to the restoration. In my younger days my #3 boat was 12' aluminum semi-vee & 5HP Sea King O.B. on a trailer. My #2 boat was a 10’ John boat (car topped) & 3.5HP Sears O.B. My FIRST boat was a classic, 12' cedar ribbed, canvas covered 'Peen Yan' (which I car topped) and a very old 3HP Water-Witch Outboard, ran great (check those 2 out!). I had good times with all those little boats. Gave my 17'-140HP 4 Winns to my son & now I’m back to another small boat... my 12' canoe :-)
damn... this is exactly the boat I'm currently restoring and I was really looking forward to seeing what he does with it.

Cyrus Yareff how's it going so far. I just bought this boat and wondering what you think of it
Cool, I am going to be doing a boat restoration project/video this month!
Thanks Don. I'm not too certain about the talent aspect, but I do enjoy working on these older boats. If I can come up with a finalized blueprint/design then I should be alright (I tend to get into trouble when I don't have a plan, lol). A name suggestion would be VERY welcome by the way! :-)
I suppose a "Small" series means the initial single video.
Right on Bro! That sounds like a sweet setup you've got there! I love those smaller flat bottom boats... you can get them into places that no one else will fish! :-) You've got to send me some pics when you get her all finished up man! Or better yet, bring her on down and we'll hit the Snake River for some big cats! ;-)
Hoping for more.
Exactly!
I have a 14' starcraft, looks to be the same era as yours. I am forward to seeing how you do your restoration.
Sounds like a great deal to me! I certainly wouldn't pass it up!
I bought a 14 foot welded Gregor for $500 that sat in someone's backyard for over 20 years, uncovered. It came with a 20hp Merc and a 4 hp Merc trolling motor. It also had two flat tires. Both motors actually fired and ran! I junked the 20hp and sold the 4hp for $200. I ended buying a brand new 15hp Honda for some big bucks but wanted reliability. The restore was fun and I used the boat for a couple of years until buying a bigger boat.

I wouldn't know where to start not boat knowledgeable good luck John
It's going to be a fun one! I haven't gotten the chance to do a boat restore project in about 3 years, so I'm really excited to get going on this one! Thanks for the encouragement!
Thanks :-)
I'm not a boater but I will be watching to see all the fab work and your design I may find a boat cheap then know to fix them get to work on it let's go
You got that right Brother! We'll be fixin' that up in a hurry ;-)
i just recently bought a 12 foot aluminum with trailer and trolling motor for 150. my first boat and a steal. it floats with out 1 leak, looking forward to see what you do with this boat.
this channel keeps getting better
Thanks Ed. Yeah, she is going to need a bit of TLC, that's for sure. Luckily there are no major issues to contend with on this one (especially since my welding skills aren't the best! lol). All the best my friend!
where the rest of the build?
so where is the "after" video?????
look like a good one to restore
I trying to start the same project with my 12 foot aluminum Starcraft with similar ideas! I am really curious to see how you approached yours! Plz post the rest :D
I want that 10 minutes of my life back

Looks like you'll be busy on this project. I'm not your typical DIY kind of guy. I missed the Boat on stuff like that...Dash
get some hard wood pallet use the boards to make flat rack for inside boat makes it easily to walk in the boat and keep feet dry
I am going to be working on a boat a lot like that. Sad that it looks like the follow up video isn’t up. If it is please point me in the right direction. Thanks.
Nice
Nice👍🏻👌🏻😜
Still looking for update videos on this series.
Right on buddy! I knew if anyone would like a good restoration project, it would be you ;-) I'll try to get as much as I can on video without boring you to death, lol. Take care Camp!
I've been looking for the rest of the restoration videos for two years. I don't believe he finished the boat. Probably bit off more than he could chew ! :-)
Yes, please make the "AFTER" video . I have one like that and would like to see the transformation. Recommended motor on that one?
Hey I have a very similar boat. Was wondering what you did with the paint job. Most boats have the bare aluminum on the bottom but mine is painted all white. Just wondering if I should paint the top and leave the bottom white or go through the process of stripping the paint
When can we expect an update? Looking forward to it :)
Yeah, I didn't make out too bad on the deal. Now for the work part... ;-)
Are there any follow up video's? We'd love to see how the project is progressing.
I am with leafygreentree has this project ever been finished?,I have not seen any more video's on this project..
I'v been looking for the rest of the restoration videos on this and can't find any?
Hey John where can we see part 2 of this video? -thanks
looking forward to part 2. I just picked an old V hull boat myself and will be doing mine right along side you. Separated only by miles and miles but right next door by internet. LOL Not sure what brand it is. It only has ____Craft on the side. The logo is broken.

Alumacraft would be my best bet on your boat's brand. I have a Western Vhull 14' boat that has gone through a complete jon --> bass boat conversion. It's sitting in my yard..need to get a hitch for my truck though.

With a little help from my friends, I came to the conclusion that it was a MirroCraft. We were able to find the logo online that matched what was left of the badge on the boat. It turned out really nice, with fishing decks fore and aft and a cooler built in midship.

he probably got arrested for stealing a boat.
Is the after part up yet? or at least an update? I would LOVE to see how this is going :)
Thanks for the vid. Any advice for a first timer buying a used boat like this? I found a 12ft vhull that looks to be in great shape with a nice lookin trailer for a steal but i have to drive 100 miles to buy it.. i won't be surprised if it's too good to be true, but I will have to tow it 100 miles home. boat appears to have a wooden transom.
Four years later and still no *"after"* video!?

Thanks Mike. Oh by the way... I forgot to mention that you gotta come help me out, haha ;-)
Just bought a 14 ft valco semi v boat in really good condition. How can I tell what year it was made (no title)
8 years later 🤔 I have the identical boat. I'd really like to customize it and have been looking pretty hard to find some inspiration and advice or opinions from someone who's done one. Think maybe you can at least post an update with photos if you forgot to make a video? Or rename the video so people like myself stop waiting for the after results? Just a thought...
